Club Report: Sunday 28th January 2018

Well, another week, another 7 days filled with overindulgence and guilt. Xmas is so last year and the Spring target races are galloping towards us much faster than I’ll ever go.

But we are Harriers and are undaunted. The huge turnouts at recent Tuesday night training sessions at BRA pitches proves it. Well done to everyone for overcoming the seemingly permanent horizontal rain, biting wind and even Neil’s warm downs.

Valley Parkrun:

Tom Fleming 21:47, Terry McIvor 24:25, Ciaran Skillen 25:01, Owen Fulton 25:16, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:56, Yasmin Lynn 31:16, Debbie Sterritt 34:31, Jennifer McCoppin 34:32, Freda Stubbs 35:29, Maureen Ward 35:55 PB, Josi McKeating 36:01, Rosalind Stitt 37:58, Miriam Clarke 41:28

Congratulations Debbie on completing your 50th parkrun!

Antrim Parkrun:

Neil Campbell 23:21, Alan Kerr 25:24, Nikki Fleck 26:00, Tina Steele 26:22, Deborah Ewing 26:55, Heather Barker 33:22, Wes Barker 33:22

Falls Parkrun:

Victoria Parkrun:

Laura Rose 22:41 Well done on a new PB, Alex Davidson 22:44, Dermot Boyd 31:46, Sharon Thompson 38:16

Carrickfergus Parkrun:

Owen Millar 30:10

This week’s tourists were Suzanne Brennan at Portrush 28:11 and Stephen Weir at Newcastle 33:04.

Not sure if it counts as tourism but Mr & Mrs Donaldson were at Wallace, completing in 21:52 and 32:44 respectively. Rumour has it that Tiffany thought she was going to Ormeau but ended up at a different parkrun. (These rumours are still to be confirmed).

Waterworks Junior Parkrun:

Joseph Eager 10:22, Ryan McCready 11:08, Leo McAuley 11:11 PB, Olivia McCready 12:35 PB, Eloise McAuley 15:13

Over on the dark side, i.e. Cross Country, our sole (and probably lonely) representative at the NI & Ulster event in Comber was Mark Smith in the men’s masters race, coming home in a very respectable 31:21. Our full basket of headers should be back in action for Stormont next week.

Some others went for the middle ground and headed to Drum Manor for the latest in the Sperrin Harriers Winter League. Taking on the 10k route were:

Patrick McGuckian 43:34 (15th place overall), Neil McCready 53:35, Fidelma McCoppin 1:12:55, Marie McFarlane 1:12:55 and Fiona Wylie 1:12:55 (great team running ladies, hope Neil and Paddy had the teas ready)

This morning our usual Sunday morning crew was joined by a lot of additional faces as they took on the Cherryburn Challenge, an event organised by Janet & Jim Grew to help raise funds for Meningitis Now. A great time was had by all, both in terms of running and eating, but mainly eating.

It is believed Jim is still at the sink doing the dishes. Janet was unavailable for comment.

I tried to find a song relevant to this week’s report but couldn’t. If you google running songs you get a worrying large number of replies that contain the Black-Eyed Peas. There is already enough suffering in the world so I’m just going to give you an underheard classic. But remember, it’s not because I like you, cus I don’t.

Club Report: Sunday 21st January 2018

Another week where my lunch hours were mainly spent praying for that post on Facebook and Team App that said training was cancelled. Alan Ladd, you are the man! Yes, my mojo is currently still on winter vacation in the Caribbean. Hopefully it will be back in time for Larne.

Results are a lot quieter this week with several cancellations due to the weather, but on to the few parkruns that survived…

Antrim parkrun:
Tina Steele 26:19, Alan Kerr 26:20, Elaine Kennedy 27:33, Nikki Fleck 31:24, Lucy Fleck 45:04

Ormeau parkrun:
Neil McCready 22:21, Susan Thompson 23:28, Ken McAuley 23:29, Jennifer McCoppin 31:31 PB, Ryan McCready 31:38, Marie McFarlane 31:59, Fidelma McCoppin 32:04, Fiona Wylie 32:07

Stormont parkrun:
Frances Kane 28:56, Patricia Kane 35:34

Victoria parkrun:
David Esler 25:12 PB, Alex Davidson 26:01

Malahide parkrun:
This week’s tourists are Stephen Semple 27:51 and Maeve Kennedy 27:52

The omission of Owen Fulton and his band of (very) merry men (and women) from this week’s parkrun results is noted. Owen is obviously taking Ian’s hydration training very seriously as he moves into his later years. Happy 40th birthday sir!

So, what was number one on Jan 19th 1978?

Mighty Oaks XC
Some of our toughest/maddest/craziest Harriers took on this re-arranged XC League event. Neither the weather nor the infamous Acorn Hill took pity on them and the photos look more like a war film than a running event. Therefore, an even bigger well done is due to those who took on the course: Mark Smith 28:37, Micky McAuley 32:23, Alan Ladd 34:25, Paul Skillen 39:11, Ciaran Skillen and Lee O’Boyle. Conquering Acorn Hill has proven to be easier than understanding the scoring system for the XC league for our runners, but with two events remaining, suffice to say the men have been delivering consistently throughout and are well positioned for a strong result in the league. Nuala Muldoon was our only competitor this time in the ladies’ event, coming home in 27:50.

At the same time as the XC runners were in action, so too were our fab four who also travelled west to hit the trails at An Creagan in the 5 Mile event which is part of the Sperrin Harriers Winter League: Neil McCready 37:37, Fidelma McCoppin 52:41, Marie McFarlane 55:33 and Fiona Wylie 55:33.

Sunday morning saw the 10@10 numbers rise from the single figures of recent weeks to well over twenty. Obviously there are a few Harriers out there now feeling the marathon/half marathon fear. If Paul’s almost vertical route did not put you off then nothing will.

This one’s for you Coach:

Club Report: Sunday 7th January 2018

I was going to start by letting you know my new year’s resolution but, as I’m already perfect, I don’t need to make any. But good luck with yours. Maybe its to get faster, whilst still filling yourself with alcohol and cake.
But on to the results…

Race Over The Glens:
Held back on New Year’s Day, the results were in too late for last week’s report but some of the Harriers blew away the new year cobwebs with this popular, if tough, event: Lee O’Boyle (our new ROTM) 41:28, Micky McAuley 42:40, Sarah McCafferty 1:01:08, Pamela McCafferty 1:01:09,

Valley parkrun:
Noel Bloomfield 25:13, Nuala Muldoon 25:45, David Esler 28:10, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 30:19, Fidelma McCoppin 31:01, Michelle Ker 32:07, Debbie Sterritt 33:34, Frances Kane 34:54, Rosalind Stitt 43:28, Patricia Kane 43:28

Waterworks parkrun:
Matthew Cromie 21:50, Patrick Hamill 25:31, Tony McKeating 26:27, Roseann “I kept my headphones in to ignore him” McGeown 30:38 (50th parkrun – congratulations), Brendan “words of encouragement” McGeown 30:42, Jennifer McCoppin 30:47 PB, Lord Ian Brennan (ex-ROTM but never forgotten) 31:42, Freda Stubbs 31:51 PB, Fiona Wylie 31:55, Maureen Ward 34:57, Sharon Thompson 39:39

Antrim parkrun:
Patrick McGuckian 20:08 course PB, Ken McAuley 23:20, Susan Thompson 23:36, Sarah Knowles 24:22 PB, Sir Martin McCready 24:22, Paul Skillen 24:46, Elaine Kennedy 27:02, Neill McGlinchey 28:26, Ethan Barrington 28:47 PB, Tina Steele 28:56, Deborah Ewing 29:12, Louise Ladd 30:26 PB, Dermot Boyd 33:04, Joanne Milne 36:46, Sharon Dunn 37:02, Cole Barrington 37:08, Anna-Marie Nolan 37:31. Congratulations to Elaine on running her 100th parkrun. Well done Elaine!

Ecos Ballymena parkrun:
Michael McFarlane 25:55 PB

Portrush parkrun:
Alastair Houldsworth 24:10, Katherine Todd 57:40

Born to Run Tollymore 10k:
Taking on the forest paths later on 6th were: Joe Mathers 42:48, Owen “comeback kid” Fulton 53:37, Clare Teer 1:00:47, Ian Simpson 1:17:53

IAAF Antrim International XC:
Also on 6th was this top class event, with CAFRE Greenmount hosting a world class international field. It was great to see the Harriers out mixing it with the big boys and girls and competing as a team as well as individuals:

Men’s Senior Race:
Mark Smith 30:48, Alan Ladd 36:23, Kevin Donnelly 38:16, Neil McCready 38:24 (and winner of best photo competition)

Women’s Senior Race:
Nuala Muldoon 30:02, Suzanne Brennan 30:46, Angela Stevenson 35:06. As a team, the MH ladies came 10th overall. Great team effort. The men’s results are still something of a mystery.

So 2017 is over, the slates have been wiped clean.
It’s time to buckle up and hit the roads in pursuit of those PBs and new distances all over again. We’re a club, so support each other. It’s always easier to hit your targets with others helping you along the way.

To help, here’s the perfect tune to run to. If I can’t improve your running, at least I might improve your musical taste.

Club Report: Monday 1st January 2018

Folks, with so much going on, your weekly news report is a long one so you might as well grab a cuppa now.

Your humble reporter made the brave decision yesterday to delay the report so that all the NYD parkruns could be included.
Why, oh why? Yesterday, I was a year younger, less ill and the screen was definitely more in focus. Plus, I’ve also now realised most of you have spent your entire week running at parkruns and elsewhere. So this week it is less sarcasm, more results. You have only yourselves to blame. Here we go……

Castlewellan Christmas Cracker
This increasingly popular pairs event took place over a very tough multi-terrain course with several Harriers declaring their retirement from international athletics at various points around the course. These decisions were obviously reversed after the first post-race drink and a great time was had by all, even if the legs and trainers may not agree:

Michael McAuley/Alex Davidson 1:20:34, Neil McCready/Martin McCourt 1:39:55, Suzanne “Splitter” Brennan/Eric “this week’s guest star” Montgomery 1:41:44, Gabrielle McMillan/Lord Ian Brennan ROTM 1:57:00, Yasmin Lynn/Terry McIvor 2:11:03

Angela Stevens 2:12:10 PB – well done Angela, good to see the Dublin training still paying dividends, and definitely a medal worth showing off.

ROTG results will follow.

So no jokes, no songs, just a dark room and a cold damp cloth.
I love 2018.

Until next week, behave.
