Run Report – Sunday 14th July 2021

Yes, I know this should have been posted last night but there was football on, in case you hadn’t noticed. You may have seen some coverage on the tv. Possibly on EBC1.
Other home nations are available, allegedly.
2 late results off the Vidiprinter from last weekend:
Micky McAuley ran the NIMRA Annalong Horseshow mountain race (20k and 2,000m elevation) on July 4th. He finished 17th in 3:12.
And on the same day, Bernard McKeaveney completed the EAMs Independence Day 6 hr challenge, completing the marathon distance in 5hrs 14 mins.
Taking on the parkruns last week were:
Valley parkrun:
Tom Fleming 18:41 (and 2nd overall); Ben Davidson 21:19; Neil McCready 21:40, Sean Doherty 22:28; Alan Erwin 23:36, Anton Piatek 29:06, Matthew Hawkins 30:18, Ciaran Hawkins 30:19, Neill McGlinchey 30:23; Marie McBrien 31:26; Dermot Boyd 33:21, Joanne Milne 35:43, Sharon Dunn 35:44, Clare Teer 58:36, John Teer 58:37

Andrew McNevison 19:58
Antrim parkrun:
Stephen Semple 23;49, Maeve Kennedy 25:38
Limavady parkrun:
Johnny Carey 24:42
And the Rt. Hon. ADav was at the Valley finishing in 19:10. Yet another PB!
Makes you wonder if he was really trying the other 291 times though.
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:24 (and 2nd overall), Matthew Hawkins 10:12
Bangor junior parkrun:
Hollie Brennan 14:50
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 8:58, Eloise McAuley 9:41PB
In other racing this week, Lee O’Boyle took on and completed the Val d’Aran by UTMB, which is a mountain running event in the Pyrenees which is 105km long with an elevation gain of 6,500m. Lee completed this in 19:24:13. Amazing run.
Those of us doing Paul’s 10@10 routes feel your pain Lee.
So, this week’s tune is definitely not a dig at the football.
I just happen to enjoy this Italian classic from Murph and the Magic Tones, the Armada Room’s finest.

Club Report – Sunday 4th July 2021

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”
“Whatever I said, whatever I did, I didn’t mean it. I just want you back for good.”
Those are the words of Nelson Mandela and Gary Barlow.
Two great, if different, men but I think we all know what they both meant. Probably.
Anyhow, parkrun is back, racing is back and so, for all your sins, the weekly report is back.
It should have returned last week with the parkruns but due to a few “technical” difficulties (most of them red, glass shaped and Argentinian) you now have the Astra Zeneca version – a double dose!
Apologies to anyone who did any racing or anything vaguely exciting at any time before June 26th. I am completely ignoring your magnificent achievements. You’re welcome.
Taking on the parkruns last week on its triumphant return were:
June 26th

Antrim parkrun:

And the Rt. Hon. ADav was at the Valley finishing in 19:26. An impressive Valley PB, although it was ruined by his shameless mic grab after he finished. Another PB, another speech….
Ben, it’s over to you Champ.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

But it is good to see us all back….

Club Report – Sunday 8th March 2020

Eleanor Roosevelt said “Well-behaved women rarely make history”. I can only say that we must be one history making club.

A couple of late results off the vidiprinter last week from Malta. The results of the Malta jury were:
Half Marathon – Neil HOTM Campbell 1:23:50 and Marathon – Jay Scott 4:59:46

Taking the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:
Paul Skillen 23:18, Ben Davidson 23:23, Karen McKee 26:16, Maeve Dunseath 26:48, Clare Teer 27:18, Anton Piatek 28:17, Bernie McAllister 28:50, Frances Kane 30:27, Dermot Boyd 32:53, Roseann McGeown 33:34, Neill McGlinchey 38:29, John Teer 39:37

Waterworks parkrun:
Dawn Blain 23:54, Maeve Kennedy 24:52, Ciaran Wright 26:25, Joseph Eager 27:06, Claire McCann 28:11, Tiffany Donaldson 35:23, Danny Donaldson 35:26

Victoria parkrun:
Angela Stevens 33:27PB

Antrim parkrun:
Tina Steele 30:07

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Lorraine Ann Forsythe 47:56, Zoe O’Prey 54:24
And congratulations to Lorraine on completing your 100th parkrun!

Stranmillis parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 29:37PB

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 19:13 (and first finisher)

The only tourist this week was Prof Alan Ladd who completed the Stretford parkrun in 17:10. This parkrun is in Manchester, the home of football, music and rain. It is also the name of the revered Stretford End in Old Trafford Stadium (2-0, mic drop, the end).

And the Rt. Hon. ADav was at the Valley finishing in 29:54

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 8:55, Eloise McAuley 10:28, Hollie Brennan 13:57PB

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Ben Halliday 11:25, Matthew Hawkins 16:37

Plenty of other racing this week too as the road racing season really kicks into gear.

Yesterday, our own Team Kerr took on the Walled City 10 miler:
Andrew Kerr 1:21:00, Lisa Kerr 1:56:41

Yesterday also saw the latest Carlingford Half Marathon. They forgot to add the wind and rain this year, possibly a result of Coronavirus. But it didn’t stop the Harriers who caught it, binned it and killed it:
Ken McAuley 1:37:48PB, Patricia Curistan 1:43:39, Susan Thompson 1:57:36

Also yesterday was the Shane’s Castle Atlas Running Series. Taking on the Half Marathon for the Harriers there included:
Neil McCready 1:36:02, Jonny Smith 1:58:15

Today our own hasty header took on his latest ultra challenge. Lee O’Boyle, for it is he, took part in the We Run Wild Castle 2 Castle Ultra. This is a 50km run from Glenarm to Carrickfergus (see, castle to castle – geddit?) with over 4,000ft elevation. Not only did Lee take part, he went and won it, finishing in 4:17:18. Micky McAuley also got the headband out to finish in 5:15:55.

Finally, the Race to Recovery 10k also took place today. Nuala Muldoon finished in 49:20 and Anita Piatek in 56:32.

Another not so gentle reminder that not every race result notes your club name and not every race makes results widely available. So, if you want to show off your latest PB, please post in the results section in Team App to make sure you are included in the weekly report. If you’d rather not associate yourself with this drivel then don’t mention it and I won’t mention you. Totally understandable.

So, this week’s tune relates to International Women’s Day. I know it should be Beyoncé’s Run the World (Girls) but this is just better. Fact.

Until next week, behave.

On Feb 29th 2012, construction was completed on the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world. On Feb 29th 2020, Ian Simpson and the Harriers took over the Valley parkrun, changed the route and survived. Leo McAuley 8:40 (and first finisher!!), Joseph Eager 9:44, Eloise McAuley 10:23

5k

Dermot Boyd 33:40

10k

Martin O’Neill 37:52 (and 9th place finish), Andrew McNevison 38:42

Results from Malta have not made it home yet so I’ll catch them up next week.

So, this week’s tune was going to be Robert Plant’s 29 Palms to celebrate leap day. But then I remembered it was rubbish. So I have yet another storm song. And its class. So there.

Club Report – Sunday 23rd February 2020

“I love the feeling of the fresh air on my face and the wind blowing through my hair”
So said modern philosopher, and all round deep thinker, Evil Knievel (look him up kids).
But he had a motorbike and didn’t live in Mallusk.
And should he not have been wearing a helmet?
Anyway…

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Waterworks parkrun:
Paul Skillen 22:17, Neil McCready 23:06, Nuala Muldoon 23:42, Ciaran Wright 25:35, Maeve Kennedy 25:40, Joseph Eager 28:48, Claire McCann 29:55

Victoria parkrun:

ECOS parkrun:
Tom Fleming 20:51, David Esler 28:24

Citypark parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 27:20PB

Omagh parkrun:
Ramunas Stanevicius 19:22PB, Galina Stanevicius 25:49PB

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Alan Kerr 26:15, Lorraine Ann Forsythe 48:30

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Owen Fulton 25:08, Frances Kane 30:25

With the Valley parkrun being cancelled, it was good to see everyone heading further afield for their weekly fix. This week’s tourism winner though is Susan Thompson. She headed to Liverpool, finishing Princes parkrun in 27:20. Princes Park was opened in 1842; Liverpool FC were founded in 1892. So at least there was no complaining to be heard for the first 50 years. Within the park is a gravestone, dated 1926, in memory of a donkey called Judy who gave “21 years of service”. Rumours that something similar is being planned for Jamie Carragher are still to be confirmed.

And the now Rt. Hon. ADav was at Waterworks finishing in 23:28.

Jordanstown parkrun:
Matthew Hawkins 18:01

On Friday night, Scrabo Striders held the Mount Stewart Run the Trails Night Edition 10k. This is a race around Mount Stewart, over 10k, at night. Taking part for the Harriers were:
Anton Piatek 58:43, Victoria McCready 1:22:08

And today, Dermot Boyd continued his Born2Run streak finishing the Castlewellan 5k in 33:30.

Just in, Nuala Muldoon completed the Stroke Association Resolution Run in 50:03 and was second female finisher. Well, that’s what she says anyway. But seeing as its her birthday, we’ll believe her. This time.

So, this week’s tune once again about wind and storms. Again.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report – Sunday 12th January 2020

Apologies for the delay this week but I didn’t think it was right to issue the report without including the junior results from yesterday. Just as important as the seniors. And better in many cases!

Back to just one parkrun a week. Thankfully. But we had bigger and better things to think about this week anyway…..

First, a couple of late results off the vidiprinter.

Jay Scott finished the EAMS new year’s day half marathon in 2:34:14 and Elaine Kennedy completed the full marathon distance on the same day in 5:05:24.

On the tourist front, just Sarah Ross this week. Back at Dunedin, finishing in 28:00.

And the lovely ADav was at Antrim 22:34

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Mathew Hawkins 12:22, Ben Halliday 13:59

But, parkruns aside, the schedules were cleared this week for the main event of the week, if not the year. Yes, let the heavens open and the thunder gods roar, it’s the Mallusk XC!

Paul Skillen and his accomplices must have prayed to the right gods though as Saturday’s weather receded, the sun shone and the rain stayed off. Still baltic though.

Now an established XC league event, the Mathieson Cup and Shield attracted over 600 runners to its 6 races. Never has Mallusk been so popular. Never.

Paul (or is it really all Leeanne??) also remembered to bring the mud and put the hills in. Thanks.

The event has grown hugely in a few short years and is now considered to be one of the best events on the circuit. So a big well done, and collective downing of pints, to all those involved. Paul said it much better in his Team App post but I have to agree it would not be possible without either the main organisers or those who came along on the day and did their bit. Almost enough to make me like you all. Almost.

Primary 800m

Leo McAuley 2:55, Jasper Brooks 3:13, Joe Eager 3:14, Oran McKee 3:20, Peter McCann 3:22, Ben Halliday 3:33, Rory Brooks 3:38, Owen Millar 3:39, Matthew Hawkins 3:49, Riley Kerr 3:49

Eloise McAuley 3:25, Erin Dunseath 3:40, Rachel Simpson 3:46, Hollie Brennan 4:21, Jessie Smith 4:59, Lexi Smith 5:01

U14 2km

Jacob Simpson 8:09

Ladies 6km

Nuala Muldoon 30:09, Suzanne Brennan 31:03, Janine Nevison 32:17, Maeve Dunseath 32:52, Maeve Kennedy 32:52 (battle of the Maeve’s anyone? better than that battle for 12th disaster!), Sarah McCafferty 33:13, Pamela McCafferty 33:14, Angela Stevens 33:55, Bernie McAllister 34:51, Gemma Fowler 36:28, Clare Teer 36:44, Galina Stanevicius 36:55, Leah Burns 37:55, Joanne Milne 38:54, Sharon Dunn 38:54 (battle of the sisters then?), Roseann McGeown 43:00

The ladies team finished 8th overall in the Mathieson Shield team event.

Mens 8km

Lee O’Boyle 30:24, Andrew McNevison 32:10, Mark Smith 32:27, Ramunas Stanevicius 32:31, Prof Alan Ladd 32:45, Stephen Gallagher 34:24, Mike Halliday 37:40, Paddy Brooks 39:46, Jonny Smith 40:57, Owen “4%” Fulton 41:52, Lord Ian Brennan 42:30, Brendan McGeown 42:30, Bernard McKeaveney 44:47

The men’s team finished 8th in the Mathieson Cup team event.

Full results are available on the Mallusk XC Facebook page, at all good bookshops and at some rubbish ones as well.

So, this week’s tune is for Paul/Leeanne and the team. I really wanted to use “Skillin’ in the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine but the lyric police wouldn’t let me. So here’s one by a popular 60s beat combo I found on the internet instead.

Until next week, behave.

Sarah Ross tried a new NZ parkrun. This time she finished Balclutha parkrun in 26:40. Jared Wrennall, the drummer from Steriogram, is from Balclutha. I know. I don’t believe it either.

Or care.

Well done to everyone who managed to double up.

But when did you take your tree down?

And the lovely ADav was at the Valley 25:37 and the Waterworks 24:05. What a guy!

In other racing, New Year’s Day brought the traditional Race Over the Glens, a tough 6 mile run. Over the Glens.

Lee O’Boyle 37:17, Mark Smith 40:02, Mike Halliday 49:36, Louise Long 1:06:43

The latest EAMS B2B events took place this week. Jay Scott completed the day 1 marathon in 4:51:27PB and Bernard McKeaveney completed the day 2 half marathon in 2:08:46.

The latest Born 2 Run events took place today at Tollymore. Official results next week but, unofficially (and please don’t tell anyone else) Dermot Boyd completed the 5k in 33:02.

So, this week’s tune is for all those Harriers who ran parkruns twice this week and maybe twice in one day. A report writer’s dream. I thank you. Really.

Ken has his tree up so it must be nearly Christmas. Time to ask Santa for all that running gear that will definitely make you faster. How can I be expected to improve if I don’t have that new jacket or the latest buff? Surely I don’t have to train as well?

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

This week’s tourists were Stephen Semple and Maeve Kennedy who took on the Oldbridge parkrun in Co Meath, finishing in 26:03 and 29:01 respectively. This parkrun takes place on the actual site of the Battle of the Boyne. Whilst our media officer has a panic attack, I will only say that Oldbridge is the location of the Mary McAleese Boyne Valley bridge which, as we all know, was Ireland’s longest cable-stayed bridge for over 6 years. Six!

And ADav was at Antrim 23:17

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Leo McAuley 8:51, Hollie Brennan 14:01PB

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Ben Halliday 11:37, Matthew Hawkins 14:20

Prof Alan Ladd, like the swallow, headed south for the winter, taking on the Clonakilty Waterfront marathon (probably in front of some water). He finished 11th in 3:08:05.

Aidy Hughes got the passport out and left Tyrone for the much sweeter fields of Co Armagh. He finished the Aghagallon Santa run in Lurgan in an unofficial 32:59.

The big event of the week was the last of the year’s big road events, the Seeley 10k:

Ramunas Stanevicius 38:04(and yet another PB), Stephen Gallagher 40:20PB, Paddy Brooks 48:34, Andrew Kerr 49:16PB, Angela Stevens 54:12PB, Galina Stanevicius 58:36

Vincent Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime. Stieg Larsson’s books only sold after his death. Vermeer, Nick Drake, Galileo, Emily Dickinson, all ignored or underrated during their lifetimes. Only fully appreciated after their time. For several years, I feared I may suffer the same fate. But no longer. Many thanks for the award. But Chesney Hawkes? Seriously? Here’s a proper tune from 1981 from the Swap Shop team.

Still don’t like you though.

Club Report – Sunday 24th November 2019

I’ve obviously spent most the week reviewing political manifestos but it was another week another muddy field for the MH mudsuckers so I’d better keep off the politics and report on that instead.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:
Paul Skillen 23:57, Yasmin Lynn 29:04, Joanne Milne 30:24, Owen Fulton 51:47

Waterworks parkrun:
Ken McAuley 21:45, Susan Thompson 24:36, Claire McCann 29:04

Antrim parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 24:54, Anton Piatek 30:12, Tina Steele 31:03, Elaine Kennedy 1:00:48

Wallace parkrun:
Neil McCready 20:35PB

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Alan Kerr 26:01, Lorraine Ann Forsythe 49:37

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 19:10, 1st place overall and matched his course PB. Well done Tom (again!)

And ADav was at the Valley 23:59

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 8:45, Joseph Eager 9:14, Eloise McAuley 9:47

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Ben Halliday 1133, Riley Kerr 11:40, Matthew Hawkins 16:23, Rhys Kerr 16:27

A late result off the vidiprinter from last week saw David Esler continue his take over of Las Vegas. After completing the 5k he then took on the half marathon distance, finishing in 2:36:47. His own description of this as #PartyPace is excellent and is now the leading principal of my current training regime. Matt Shields may disagree. And probably rightly so.

Elaine Kennedy continued her recent run of marathons, completing the latest EAMs Fatlad marathon in 5:23:48.

Earlier today, Bernard McKeaveney donned the tash, and God knows what else, to complete the MoRun 10k at Stormont in 57:10.

Also today, Ramunas Stanevicius continued his strong weekend of running with a PB performance of 18:34 in the Castleblaney 5k.

But the big event of the week was the latest XC league, the Malcolm Cup at Ballyclare. There was a great turnout from the Harriers. Most impressive were those runners who endured the horrors of Comber and still came back for more. Complete headers.

Ladies 3 mile race:
Sharon Dunn 24:48, Angela Stevens 25:19, Pamela McCafferty 26:01, Suzanne Brennan 26:03, Sarah “the comeback kid” McCafferty 26:27, Maeve Dunseath 26:29, Bernie “why did I do this again?” McAllister 26:35, Galina Stanevicius 29:00, Roseann McGeown 37:23

Men’s 4 mile race:
Lee O’Boyle 23:30, Ramunas Stanevicius 25:21, Prof Alan Ladd 26:15, Joe Mathers 27:12, Neil McCready 28:39, Mike Halliday 29:45, Sean Doherty 30:20, Stephen Smyth 31:20, Owen Fulton 32:04, Alan “out of his sickbed and it wasn’t even a hangover” Irwin 32:24, Brendan McGeown 33:46, Lord Ian “I don’t care cus I won an iPad” Brennan 33:46.1

The battle for 12th (or actually 11th this time for all you pendants out there) took on a new dimension as it saw its first ever sprint finish. McGeown won this one but it was a hollow victory as Lord Brennan had twisted an ankle mid-race and was not operating on all cylinders. The most impressive element was that both managed to keep their breakfasts down in the funnel afterwards. Just.
Those of you desperately awaiting the next instalment will have to wait a while as Lord Brennan cannot make the next race at Mighty Oaks. He says he is going to the Xmas panto with work.
Oh no he isn’t.
Oh yes he is.
Sorry.

So this week’s song is for all the mudsuckers, especially those who suffered at the end.

Club of the Year 2019

Club Report – Sunday 17th November 2019

There’s me thinking I would have a quiet week this week, all done early and curled up in front of the Blackpool ballroom. But no. You lot were flippin’ running everywhere. From the Valley to Vegas. Literally.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:

Ben Davidson 23:41, Noel Bloomfield 25:03, Sharon Dunn 25:53, Frances Kane 30:19, Joanne Milne 30:38, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 31:06, Roisin Brooks 31:21, Lisa Kerr 32:08

Waterworks parkrun:

Ken McAuley 21:18, Paul Skillen 22:06PB, Susan Thompson 24:51, Jim Hewitt 26:07

Ormeau parkrun:

Anton Piatek 26:54

Antrim parkrun:

Neil McCready 21:42, Tina Steele 30:15

Carrickfergus parkrun:

Alan Kerr 25:14, Zoe O’Prey 43:40, Lorraine-Ann Forsythe 48:59

Sixmilewater parkrun:

Tom Fleming 20:12

A couple of tourists this week. Social boy pulled the trainers back on again and headed for the home of the parkrun, Bushy Park, finishing in 38:34. Just the 1,327 runners at this one. (Sammy’s voice would be wrecked!).

Stephen Weir was at Leazes parkrun, finishing in 31:17. This one takes place in Leazes park in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. It has a lake and some fancy gates. That’s it. That’s all I’ve got.

And ADav was at the Valley 24:10

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:38

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Ben Halliday 11:54, Riley Kerr 11:58, Matthew Hawkins 11:59, Rhys Kerr 12:59PB

And a big well done to Matthew on his 100th parkrun.

Wednesday (probably fairly late on) saw the Run in the Dark events:

10k

Anton Piatek 51:29PB, Paddy Brooks 53:21, Jay Scott 54:23, Bernard McKeaveney 55:56, Victoria McCready 1:16:18

On Saturday, Prof Alan Ladd got his wizard hat back out again and organised the latest Club Handicap race. The race anyone can win. If they run. The full results are on Team App but suffice to say that the juniors continued their domination of this event. The podium places were taken by Riley Kerr in first place, followed by Owen Fulton and Andrew Kerr. A Kerr sandwich with a Fulton filling if you will.

The latest Born 2 Run event happened yesterday at Drum Manor:

10k:

Ramunas Stanevicius 39:53 (and 4th place finish), Dermot Boyd 1:06:46

Published results do not contain club names so I can only report those posted on Team App.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any published results for the 26Extreme events so if you want your result published please comment on this post.

Our international desk reports that the Harrier vest was once more on display down under as Sarah Ross completed the Queensland marathon in 4:15:02.

Hot off the vidiprinter, I have just been informed that Lee O’Boyle has finished 3 rd in the Tweed
Valley Ultra in Scotland in a time of 5:50:10. This is a 65k (40 mile) multi-terrain event with over
5,000 ft of elevation. Or a Sunday run as Lee now calls it. Take a bow Sir. Carefully.

Finally, David Esler ended up where he was born to be, Vegas baby! He completed the Las Vegas Rock’n’Roll 5k in 30:00. No doubt he’s now away off for a bit of Siegfried & Roy.

So this week’s song is for Mr Esler. Let’s hope he’s got the gold lame suit on too!
