Club Report – Sunday 10th November 2019

Thanks to the new media officer for covering for me last week. Apologies for my absence, I was away selling a kidney so I could afford to enter a couple of races that I may do in a year or so. Happy times.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:

Neil Campbell (and 1st place finish), Owen Fulton 27:29, Jay Scott 27:47, Neill McGlinchey 28:45, Patrick Hughes 37:40, Zoe O’Prey 44:33

Waterworks parkrun:

Anita “lonely pint” Piatek 27:55

Antrim parkrun:

Elaine Kennedy 28:43

Our resident Kiwi, Sarah Ross, completed the NZ Dunedin parkrun in 27:20

And our only tourist this week was Stephen Gallagher. He added his name to the illustrious MH Clermont Hall of Fame completing the Florida parkrun in 20:00.

And ADav was at Antrim 23:10

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:26

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Matthew “ice-cream with a flake” Hawkins 11:20, Riley Kerr 12:12, Rhys Kerr 13:44

3 Harriers were at the Ballynahinch Remembrance 5k yesterday:

Hannah Hope 33:07 Dermot Boyd 33:08, Anne Boyd 46:30

But the main event of the weekend was the Mudsuckers second visit to Billy Neill Playing Fields in Comber for the latest XC league meeting, the Bobby Rea event.

The team were not sure whether to wear spikes or flippers as the bad weather of the week continued and only got worse. I think there was a spot at the back of the course borrowed from the upside down in Stranger Things. Several runners are still unaccounted for.

Speaking of strange things, I can only report the results as they are published. This means several of the ladies have no times and most results bear no resemblance to GPS watch times. The only result that can be reported with any confidence is that Lord Brennan won the battle for 12th. Maybe it was mud getting in there making Benny’s eyes water in the gazebo afterwards.

Ladies 5k swim:

Sharon Dunn 29:22, Angela Stevens 30:24, Suzanne Brennan “no time”, Galina Stanevicius “no time”, Laura Campbell “no time”, Leeanne Skillen “no time”, Roseann “better put my ticket on” McGeown “no time”

Men’s 8k swim:

Lee O’Boyle 37:30, Ramunas Stanevicius 38:25, Prof Alan Ladd 41:13 maybe, Neil McCready 43:30, Joe Mathers 46:10, Paul Skillen 46:30, Sean “newbie and luvin’ it” Doherty 46:48, Owen “ringer” Fulton 49:48, Lord Ian “victory is mine” Brennan 52:00, Brendan McGeown 53:00

Big thanks to social boy for the Gazebo and refreshments and thanks to those who helped put it up and dismantle it in those conditions.

So this week’s song is for the mudsuckers who braved the Comber conditions yesterday. It was obviously too cold for timing chips but not for us. For those who ran/swam round those fields, we salute you.

Club Report – Sunday 27th October 2019

A quieter week this week as the hill headers and mudsuckers both took a week off. Unless you’re a junior. They don’t feel the cold like the rest of us. I know its cold when my teeth start chattering. And they’re still in the glass beside the bed.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:

Patrick Hughes 23:54PB, Yasmin Lynn 28:43, Neill McGlinchey 29:04, Stephen Weir 32:14, Frances Kane 32:46, Roseann McGeown 33:18

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:23, Hollie Brennan 14:10PB

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Riley Kerr 11:11, Rhys Kerr 14:25

Our juniors were once again showing up the oldies this week. This time it was at the NI & Ulster XC Championships:

Girls 10

Hannah Chestnutt 5:52

Girls 12

Jill Chestnutt 6:38

Boys 10

Peter Fleming 4:43 (and 4th place), Oran McKee 5:44, Joe Eager 5:47

Boys 14

Tom Fleming 10:16

Newbie Jay Scott competed in the EAMS Dublin B2B half marathon yesterday, finishing in 2:10:08PB.

The big running event of the week was, of course, the Dublin marathon. The Harriers had 8 brave souls taking on the half decent Autumnal conditions:

Joe Mathers 3:04:54, Stephen Gallagher 3:11:04, Alan Erwin 3:27:06PB, Patricia Curistan 3:39:42, Jonny Smith 4:03:17, Angela Stevens 4:28:48, Danny Donaldson 5:07:27, Tiffany Donaldson 6:14:05

So, this week’s song/singer is for our very own Dub runners. It’d from the best band out of Dublin since Power of Dreams. Sorry Bono.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report – Sunday 13th October 2019

What else can be said about the Kipchoge run.
History made. A genuine lump in the throat, tear in the eye moment, even for a miserable git like me.
Just over 8 parkruns in a row at 14:10 pace.
But how many times has he volunteered?

Late result off the vidiprinter, Dune Half Marathon from last Sunday:
Jonathan Carter 1:35:22, Bernard McKeaveney 2:06:21, Angela HOTM Stevens 2:06:24, David Esler 2:20:37

Taking on the “slower than Kipchoge” parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:
Patrick Hughes 24:34, Noel Bloomfield 25:13, Frances Kane 1:00:46

Waterworks parkrun:
Alan Erwin 20:02PB, Paul ROTM Skillen 22:16PB, Ben Davidson 22:31PB, Neil Campbell 23:13, Matt Allen 23:29, Lord Ian Brennan 24:27, Maeve Kennedy 25:18, Joseph Eager 25:36, Jim Hewitt 25:41, David Esler 27:02PB, Sarah McCafferty 27:18, Pamela McCafferty 27:19, Nikki Fleck 27:48, Owen Fulton 28:57, Neill McGlinchey 29:03, Philip Fleck 29:18, Suzanne Brennan 29:24, Sharon Dunn 29:25PB, Joe Mathers 29:26, Roisin Brooks 29:34, Oran McKee 30:56, Karen McKee 31:00, Zoe Neill 32:49, Joanne Milne 35:40
Obviously a lot of you inspired by Mr Kipchoge given the 5 PBs today. Well done to all.
And congratulations to Suzanne on her 50th parkrun.
And congratulations to Sharon on her 50th parkrun.
And congratulations to Joe on his 50th parkrun.

Aidy Hughes 25:56

Antrim parkrun:
Dermot Boyd 30:27, Tina Steele 30:38

Carrickfergus parkrun:

And ADav was at the Waterworks 20:38.

Riley Kerr 10:45PB, Rhys Kerr 15:10, Matthew Hawkins 15:47

5k
Dermot Boyd 30:42

Today saw the latest Leg-It event with the annual Running Scared 5 mile run/splash:

Michael Reid 38:10, Noel Bloomfield 40:49, Angela Stevens 43:29PB, Anita Piatek 43:47, Andrew Kerr 44:57PB.
And big congratulations to Keeley McGarry who kept up the family podium tradition coming second in the junior mile race. (That’s 2nd Peter, not 3rd, okay?!)

Finally, our international correspondent spotted Elaine Kennedy sneaking round Chicago this weekend. The woman who, it should be noted, has completed many more parkruns than Kipchoge, completed yet another marathon major in 4:58:42.

So, this week’s song can only be for Mr Kipchoge.
An amazing man; an amazing achievement. It’s unbelievable Jeff!

Until next week, behave.

Club Report – Sunday 6th October 2019

Bit tired today. I was up late watching Scullion in the marathon last night and was busy being very impressed by Calum Hawkins. And hadn’t really recovered from Mageean’s PB earlier. All great stuff. It would almost inspire you to stick the trainers on and get out there. Almost.

Late result off the vidiprinter, the Divis 10k from last Sunday:
Jonathan Carter 47:58, Maeve Kennedy 1:02:08

Taking on the 15th anniversary parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Ramunas Stanevicius 19:23 (PB and 2nd place overall), Tom Fleming 20:02, Alastair Houldsworth 21:16, Ben Davidson 23:25, Patrick Hughes 24:56, Owen Fulton 25:25, Sharon Dunn 28:27, Neill McGlinchey 30:00, Marie McFarlane 32:47, Fidelma McCoppin 32:52, Karen O’Boyle 34:09, Sophie Davidson 36:38, Joanne Milne 36:45, Jay Scott 56:43

Carrickfergus parkrun:

This week’s tourists were Stephen Weir back at Newcastle upon Tyne, finishing in a new PB of 28:16 and Sarah Ross back at Dunedin finishing in yet another PB time of 26:13.

And ADav was at the Valley, 21:32.

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Riley “doing the double” Kerr 11:57, Matthew Hawkins 13:06, Rhys Kerr 15:47

Our international correspondent has sent in a report stating that Dermot Boyd is at it again.

Dermot completed the 10k event in Bodrum, Turkey in 1:06:31. Anne ran the much more sensible 5k distance in 46:51.

Main event of the week was the Orangegrove NI & Ulster Relays at Victoria Park.
The Harriers had both male and female teams in both the senior and masters races, although our elite talent was reserved for the junior races. Our primary school squad were so fast they could not be timed.

The Men’s Senior team finished in 24th place in 48:48.
Ladies Senior team finished in 28th place in 49:36
Men’s Masters team finished in 35th place in 52:55

There were at least 4 Harriers taking part in the Dune Half Marathon today but results are not available at the time of writing. It’s a cross border event so it’s probably Boris’ fault.

There may have been Harriers at the Craigavon ¾ Marathon event too but there are no results available there yet either. Probably not Boris’ fault; it’s just Craigavon. The results are probably still circling a roundabout somewhere.

So, this week’s song is for those who represented the club at the relays. I could have used the Van Morrison song, Orangefield. But this is better. And is still orange.

Club Report – Sunday 29th September 2019

A busy week for the Harriers this week, on the road, over the hills, internationally. Plenty of running. And Utd haven’t even got beaten this weekend. Yet.
Not mentioning rugby any more.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Patrick Hughes 24:51, Own Fulton 25:59, Alan Erwin 27:35, Sharon Dunn 29:06, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 30:48, Frances Kane 31:58

Waterworks parkrun:
Matt Allen 24:29, Susan Thompson 24:56, Maeve Kennedy 26:11, Joseph Eager 26:50, Claire McCann 27:45, Angela HOTM Stevens 29:21, Danny Donaldson 38:26, Tiffany Donaldson 38:28
And a big congratulations to our King & Queen of Different as they both hit 200 parkruns at the same time. Young love, eh!?!

Queens parkrun:
Stephen Smyth 23:06

Antrim parkrun:
David Esler 25:48, Marie McFarlane 31:42, Fidelma McCoppin 32:02, Elaine Kennedy 50:13

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Peter Fleming 21:52PB

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Eloise McAuley 10:18,

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Riley Kerr 11:38, Matthew Hawkins 11:43, Rhys Kerr 13:53

Saturday saw the 10th anniversary of the Causeway Coast Marathon event with races over several distances on this flat and fast course. Not.
Taking on the ultra distance was Neil Campbell. Neil ran (and no doubt talked) his way over the 40 mile course in 6:13:50, finishing in an impressive 8th place.
Taking on the half marathon distance:
Jonny Smith 2:12:08, Karen McKee 2:29:56, Suzanne Brennan 2:38:55, Alan Kerr 2:46:38, Laura Campbell 3:11:09, Leeanne Skillen 3:11:09, Neill McGlinchey 3:11:25

Other Harriers were at the Annaghmore Running Festival.
Working on their marathon prep in the 18 miler distance were Joe Mathers 2:04:30, Stephen Gallagher 2:16:20, Patricia Curistan 2:34:42 and Ken McAuley 2:34:42.
Taking on the half marathon were ADav 1:37:48 and Joanne Milne 2:12:46.

Harriers were at the aptly named Bangor 10k yesterday, in Bangor!
Ramunas Stanevicius 39:22, Paddy Brooks 48:36, Dermot Boyd 1:03:24

Aidy Hughes tried to outfox me by finding another 5k to run in deepest Tyrone. He completed the Brocagh 5k School Run in 26:18. Duckingstool Point is nearby and they used to dunk suspected witches there. I think they’ve stopped the practice now. But I’m honestly not sure.

Then today it was the Albertville 5k. Yasmin Lynn continued recent good form with another 5k PB in 24:25. Lord Ian Brennan continued his tune up for the upcoming XC season finishing in 24:27.

Angela HOTM Stevens completed the Monaghan Half Marathon in 2:10:51.

Andy McNevison completed this year’s FEARmanagh (trail running, cycling and kayaking) in 4:32:33.

Divis 10k results are not available at the time of writing so will have to come through on the vidiprinter next week.

On the international front, our very own Lee O’Boyle was in Berlin, taking on his first major of the year. Lee finished in an amazing 2:42:16. Swift!

Folks, just another reminder to note any non-parkrun results in Team App if you want a mention in the report. Trying to match posted photos to results lists can be hit and miss and you may be excluded. Also, please always include your club name (correctly spelled!) wherever possible when entering events. Cheers.

So, this week’s song is for our Berlin hero. Yes, I could have used that Bowie song. I could have used Iggy Pop. I know Lee would personally have loved “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun, sung by Berlin. But I’ve chosen the best song that U2 ever wrote about Berlin Zoologischer Garten train station.

Club Report – Sunday 22nd September 2019

On Sunday, it was raining outside, Utd took another tanking on live tv, people kept talking about something called rugby. Not my favourite day to be honest. But I put my family sized trifle down long enough to read the Half Marathon results achieved by the Harriers and that cheered me up. A bit. More of that later.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Yasmin Lynn 26:37PB, Neil Campbell 26:53, Brendan McGeown 26:54, Angela Stevens 28:07PB, Suzanne Brennan 29:22, Joanne Milne 29:37, Stephen Weir 31:23, Karen O’Boyle 34:23

Waterworks parkrun:
Neil “ice cream with a flake in it” McCready 23:31, Susan Thompson 25:07, Maeve Kennedy 25:37, Joseph Eager 26:33

Queens parkrun:

Stephen Smyth 28:19

Antrim parkrun:
Tina Steele 29:19

Orangefield parkrun:
Ben Davidson 23:34

Matthew Hawkins 11:34, Riley Kerr 12:10, Rhys Kerr 14:49

And ADav was at Orangefield, 20:41 (and second place overall)

No racing during the week this week for anyone as you all prepped for the Belfast Half. Such dedication!

Belfast Half Marathon Results:
Peter McGarry 1:13:40 (and 11th place overall), Prof Alan Ladd 1:23:40, Ramunas Stanevicius 1:26:29PB, Stephen Gallagher 1:29:16, Alan Erwin 1:30:55PB, Neil McCready 1:33:22, Stephen Smyth 1:35:54, Ken McAuley 1:38:52, Patricia Curistan 1:40:35, ADav 1:39:43, Andrew Kerr 1:42:34, Brendan McElroy 1:45:34, Paddy Brooks 1:48:48, Paul Skillen 1:50:47, Pamela McCafferty 1:52:40, Sean McQuade 1:54:36, Lord Ian “bokey” Brennan 1:57:53, Anton Piatek 1:59:02, Darren Taggart 1:59:13, Owen Fulton 2:02:05, Angela Stevens 2:03:19PB, Bernard McKeaveney 2:03:30, David Esler 2:05:10, Joanne Milne 2:09:45, Gemma Fowler 2:09:35, Roisin Brooks 2:11:24, Clare Teer 2:11:57, Lisa Kerr 2:13:56, Michael McFarlane 2:16:35, Galina Stanevicius 2:14:34, Neill McGlinchey 2:22:01, Leeanne Skillen 2:22:17, Anita Piatek 2:21:26, Stephen Weir 2:29:42
Well done everyone.
And a big thank you to the volunteers and non-running club members who took a soaking to add their support.

So, this week’s tune is for everyone who ran the Belfast Half, for those who supported and those who organised the Shebeen. Half a World Away was too obvious.
It has to be Half Man Half Biscuit. Not only do they use the word half twice in their name, they also gave us the only song I know of that is dedicated to Lurgan’s most famous snooker referee (The Len Ganley Stance). Honestly.

Club Report – Sunday 15th September 2019

I didn’t sleep well last night. Bad dreams about flags and measurements. Those of you at the quiz last night will understand my pain. Craic was good and it was probably the first time I’ve had to put myself in the mindset of a migrating swallow to see where I would go in the winter.
Big thanks to social boy Ian and his lovely helper Fidelma (even though she wouldn’t tell us the answers).

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Alan Erwin 20:45PB, Prof Alan Ladd 22:56, Neil Campbell 22:57, Maeve Kennedy 26:01, Owen Fulton 26:29, Joe Mathers 26:32, Yasmin Lynn 26:57, Eamon Donaghy 28:36, Joanne Milne 29:56, Stephen Weir 31:24

Waterworks parkrun:
Jim Hewitt 24:24, Hollie Brennan 46:14, Suzanne Brennan 47:10, Tiffany Donaldson 35:04, Danny Donaldson 35:07

ECOS parkrun:
Andrew McNevison 19:23

Antrim parkrun:
Alan Kerr 26:32, Tina Steele 29:27

Queens parkrun:
Stephen Smyth 20:39PB

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Noel Bloomfield 23:31, Jennifer Maguire 32:32

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 19:10PB and third place overall

Our parkrun tourists this week were Elaine Kennedy at Craigavon 27:50 and Sarah Ross at Dunedin NZ 27:07PB.
Dunedin may be in “beautiful” New Zealand but Craigavon has a petting zoo and an artificial ski slope. So there.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:51, Hollie Brennan 16:351
And well done Hollie on getting your half marathon band!

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Matthew Hawkins 11:17

And ADav was at the Valley, 20:58.

It was the Gig’n the Bann 5kin Portglenone on Thursday night and our own Prof Ladd was there, finishing in 18:16. Also, Suzanne Brennan in 25:24 and Zoe Neill 32:10PB.

On Friday night, Snapper Boyd was back at it again, this time at the GRC Coastal 5k in Carnlough/Glenarm. Our current ROTM finished in 29:33.

So this week’s tune is for Ian (and Fidelma). Tunes with questions? Loads of good ones – Who Are You? Is This Love? What’s Going on? Should I Stay or Should I Go? How Soon Is Now? Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? What’s New Pussycat? Are Friends Electric? Will You Love Me Tomorrow? How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?
The list is endless but this one is mainly how we felt last night. And it’s a proper tune from a proper band.
(We didn’t win)

Club Report – Sunday 8th September 2019

I thought you would have had no time for running this week, what with all the revision required for the big quiz on Saturday night. I know I’ve spent hours trying to work out how to hide my phone up my sleeve and still be able to access Google.

More late results off the vidiprinter this week as we now have the junior results from last week’s Laganside Junior 1 mile race:
Peter McCann 7:06, Oran McKee 7:17, Amie McDonald 9:13, Hollie Brennan 12:39.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Joe Mathers 19:17PB, Neil McCready 21:21, Sean Doherty 22:06PB (again!), Ben Davidson 24:15, Owen Fulton 26:16, Joanne Milne 29:45, Sharon Dunn 29:45, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 30:25, Yasmin Lynn 58:24

Waterworks parkrun:
Ken McAuley 21:11, Susan Thompson 24:22

Queens parkrun:
Stephen Smyth 28:40

Antrim parkrun:
David Esler 24:54, Angela Stevens 43:13

Carrick parkrun:
Noel Bloomfield 25:17, Maeve Kennedy 26:25PB, Jennifer Maguire 34:20

Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 19:55, Peter Fleming 22:14PB, Ann Boyd 44:51

Our parkrun tourists this week were Elaine Kennedy at Falcarragh 28:42PB and Sarah Ross at Dunedin NZ 27:10PB.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:34, Leo McAuley 9:39, Eloise McAuley 10:14, Hollie Brennan 17:52

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Ben Halliday 12:24, Matthew Hawkins 12:40

And ADav was at the Valley, 20:59.

It was EAMS 100th marathon event yesterday and taking on the full distance were Neil Campbell 2:58:43 (second place overall), Laura Rose 3:54:49 (2nd female finisher) and Suzanne Brennan 4:12:30PB (3rd female finisher).

Also on Saturday was the Larne 10k. Representing the Harriers were:
Ramunas Stanevicius 39:52, Galina Stanevicius 1:00:03, Dermot ROTM Boyd 1:02:37 (and age category winner).

Taking on Sir Mo and his dodgy arm warmers over at the Great North Run today were 4 hardy Harriers: Paddy Brooks 1:51:32, Roisin Brooks 2:06:41, Anita Piatek 2:09:32, Ian Simpson 3:08:51.

Meanwhile, a number of Harriers took on the 10k na Ceathrún Gaeltachta to raise awareness of organ donation. No club names included with results.

My spies also tell me that Lee O’Boyle has won the Killyleagh Half Marathon in 1:17:39 but I will confirm this next week if possible.

So this week’s tune, in honour of the GNR, is from an underrated Newcastle band and is an absolute classic. Consider yourselves educated. You’re welcome.

Until next week, behave.
