Club Report – Sunday 14th April

Another week full of running. A week full of headers and heroes. So let’s shut up and get on with it.

Firstly, taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Ramunas Stanevicius 21:13, Noel Bloomfield 23:55, Neill McGlinchey 28:03, Anton Piatek 29:18, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:25, Ethan Hutchinson 29:25, Galina Stanevicius 29:58, Jennifer Maguire 46:40

Waterworks parkrun:
Kevin Donnelly 18:34PB, Sean Doherty 22:19PB
I should note that Mr Donnelly not only set a new PB, beating his previous sub 20 course best by almost a minute. He was also first finisher. Please stop now Kevin as you are making the rest of us look bad. But we still salute you Sir.

Antrim parkrun:
Neil McCready 20:11PB, Alan Kerr 25:20, Tina Steele 28:55, Elaine Kennedy 29:10, Ryan McCready 31:50

Stranmillis parkrun:
Susan Thompson 25:44, Ken McAuley 25:45

Ormeau parkrun:
Eamonn Donaghy 23:03

MUSA parkrun:
Aidy Hughes 24:55

Newcastle parkrun:
Stephen Weir 29:38

Oughterard parkrun:
Lord Ian Brennan 25:11, Amy O’Boyle 51:00, Karen O’Boyle 51:03, Owen Fulton 51:14, Suzanne Brennan 51:15

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:23, Matthew Hawkins 11:43, Jamie Campbell 16:07PB

The racing started back on Tuesday evening with ladies only Ballymena Belles 5 mile road race:
Karen McKee 37:06PB, Sarah McCafferty 37:53PB, Petunia McCafferty 39:32PB (okay, Patricia), Maeve Dunseath 41:29, Anita Piatek 45:12PB, Roisin Brooks 46:50, Louise Long 47:20, Angela Stevens 48:48, Suzanne Brennan 50:40, Mairead O’Hare 55:11PB
Many thanks ladies for postings all your results on Team App. No club name on official results so it really helped. (Especially as I was late writing this after watching the golf!)

Then on Saturday, 2 Harriers headed off to scenic Glenarm for the last Born2Run event. Dermot Boyd came out from behind the camera to complete the 5k in 34:26. Jonny Smith completed the Half Marathon in 1:53:30.

Today was a busy day too. Several Harriers continued their training for the Belfast Marathon by taking part in the scenic Craigavon Three Quarter Marathon, just 6 laps of the balancing lakes:
Stephen Gallagher 2:18:41, Karen McKee 2:37:13, Jim Guinn 3:08:12, Neill McGlinchey 3:46:41, Leeanne Skillen 3:53:01

Also today was the MS Society Subway Half in Belfast:
Alan Ladd 1:19:37PB, Angela Stevens 2:10:35, Roisin Brooks 2:02:06, Anita Piatek 2:13:03PB, Yasmin Lynn 2:19:52, Mairead O’Hare 2:26:49PB

Doing the full marathon distance today was Craig Mills who completed the Brighton marathon (his 89th!!) in 3:34:24.

But even this distance was not enough for some. Yes, our header department had a day out as 8 of them took on the Connemara Ultra. A nice flat 39 mile course. In the wind. And the rain. And the cold. Lovely.
First Harrier home was Lee O’Boyle who finished in second place with an amazing time of 4:42:15
Well done Sir. A real reward for all the training you have put in.
Micky McAuley 5:52:17, Joe Mathers 6:15:59, Danny Donaldson 6:33:04, Christiaan Spies 6:33:04, Sharon Dunn 7:26:23, Suzanne Brennan 7:40:48, Tiffany Donaldson 8:28:43
Also, Kevin “only here for the beer” Donnelly decided he had done enough with 2 PBs in a week and “only” did the Half Marathon distance in 1:41:49 (unofficial)

This week’s tune speaks for itself.

Final result comes from Manchester (Dance cap-ee-tal of England) where Kevin Donnelly took part in the city’s marathon. Kevin finished in an amazing 3:01:11. A huge PB and a great example to us all that training hard pays off. There are no shortcuts.

So this week’s tune is for Kevin – from some older Manchester legends to a new one.

Earlier this week I noticed that our own mountain-based header, Micky McAuley, completed the Denis Rankin Round, only the 39th person to do so. This is a challenge linking all the Mourne Mountain summits over 400m. The route is about 90km, involves 6,200m of climbing and must be done within 24 hours. We salute you Sir. Did someone mention Barkley…….?

The big event this week was the Titanic 10k, with plenty of Harriers taking part in both the junior and senior events:
1k Junior Race
Adam McCann 3:16 (and 3rd overall), Jasper Brooks 4:14, Rory Brooks 4:33, Peter McCann 4:34, Oran McKee 4:49

Last year I think I posted a Mother’s Day song from Mr T. It’s hard to beat that to be honest so this week’s tune is for a different reason.
Yes, it was the birthday this week of my sister from another mister.
For some reason, every time I think of this person, I think of this scene. Think I need help.
Happy birthday ADav!

Club Report – Sunday 24th March 2019

A big thank you to my glamourous assistant for last week’s report. They are the Debbie McGee of the reporting world but have been spoken to about their taste in music. Again.

But this week is all about one place. The home of Keith Gillespie, Dave “Boy” McAuley, Jonathan Rea and James McIlroy. The only place I know to have a calcium silicate mineral named after it. Yes, we’re talking about Ca2SiO4 – Larnite. (Every day’s a school day in the Harrier reports folks.)

So, yesterday the Harriers (eventually) got on the bingo bus to the Larne Half Marathon. Just the 60 Harriers took part and there were PBs and amazing performances all over the show:

Not one result posted in Team App so I have only noted the PBs I heard about (and can still remember!).

I could have given you “Forty Shades of Green” as this week’s tune but, after last week’s horror show I think you need something better. So, here’s one from the best thing out of Larne since the Stranraer ferry, Therapy!
Sing along…….

(Cav will update junior parkrun results next week. They’re not out yet and I’ve yet to have my first St Patrick’s Day pint).

The shamrock isn’t the only thing to get drowned this weekend – pretty much anyone running would have been drowned, probably no one more so than Elaine Kennedy who swam, paddled and waded her way through the EAMS Stormathon 6 hour challenge yesterday, completing 5 laps in 4:02:14.

Another EAMS event today saw Zoe O’Prey taking on one loop of the St Patrick’s Day challenge in 1:21:23.

Mark Smith chalked up yet another impressive podium, coming in third place at the inaugural Ormeau Runners Forestside 5 Mile trail race, a really tough course by all accounts, and definitely a welcome addition to the calendar.

Also yesterday, our vest in the west ran 53:52 at the Washingbay Green Run 10k.

The big event of the weekend (quickly forgetting the rugby yesterday) was the SPAR Craic 10k, an event that attracts over 1700 runners running from City Hall to Titanic.
Martin O’Neill 37:47 PB, Ramunas Stanevicius 39:36 PB, Neil McCready 40:47, Chris Quinn 41:07, Tony McKeating 44:28, Stephen Semple 45:40, Damian Cole 47:31, Ian Brennan 48:40, Maeve Kennedy 51:25, Fidelma McCoppin 52:55, Nikki Fleck 53:53, Matt Allen 54:59, Janet Grew 55:45, Clare Teer 56:18, Gemma Fowler 56:21, Frances Kane 59:26, Michael McFarlane 1:00:04, Marie McFarlane 1:00:05, Leo McAuley 1:01:32, Micky McAuley 1:01:33, Freda Stubbs 1:06:22, Sharon Thompson 1:07:32, Josi McKeating 1:07:35, Mairead O’Hare 1:07:31 PB, Tracey Whittley 1:09:26, Angela Stevens 1:14:24

Meanwhile, in Downpatrick Maeve Dunseath came home in with a PB of 51:16 in East Down AC’s Jimmy’s Ten 10k race.

That’s all for now folks. Normal service will hopefully be restored next week, which is probably a good thing given my taste in music.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

The racing started back on Tuesday night as Kevin Donnelly took on the Dublin 10k night run in 40:07.

Atlas Running held a multi-race event at Shane’s Castle yesterday with Harriers across the events:
Marathon
Joe Mathers 3:23:41 and 2nd place overall, Sharon Dunn 4:12:15 and 3rd female finisher
Half Marathon
Neil Campbell 1:25:35 and 2nd place overall, Jonny Smith 1:54:45, Paul Skillen 2:04:24, Neill McGlinchey 2:35:14
10k:
Janine McNevison 58:16, Leah Burns 1:04:56
Plus, a special mention to Lee O’Boyle who completed 17 miles of the marathon course.

Stephen Semple had the wit to avoid the Mallusk weather and headed off to Barcelona for their marathon. Stephen finished in 4:25. Footy and Estrella time Stephen! (Other sports are available).

Also avoiding the weather, although on a more permanent basis, was Sarah Ross who completed the Lowe Hutt 10k in New Zealand in 51:17.

Not to be outdone in the races with strange names contest, Micky McAuley took part in the Glenariffe Spud Run, finishing in 58:44.

Then today, taking on both the Race to Recovery 10k and the weather were:
Ramunas Stanevicius 40:08, Ciaran Hawkins 49:04, Roisin Brooks 55:18, Anita Piatek 57:11 PB.

A big collective pat on the back to all those Harriers who made it out this morning, especially those doing their long runs. Not fun, but its all money in the bank and you now have it lodged for when its needed during those spring marathons.
So, toast some Veda, grab some coffee, head for the sofa and enjoy your tune. Well earned.

ECOS parkrun:

Karen O’Boyle 29:32, Lee “well beaten“ O’Boyle 29:32

Queen’s parkrun:

James Guinn 24:00

Orangefield parkrun:

Dermot HOTM Boyd 31:50PB, Anne Boyd 37:46PB

Well done guys!

No doubt about this week’s tourist as Stephen Weir completed Albert parkrun, Melbourne in 31:00.

Main fact about Albert Park is that is the venue for the season opening Melbourne F1 Grand Prix. Plus it was called South Park before Victoria hitched up with Albert.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:36, Leo McAuley 11:18, Eloise McAuley 11:19, Matthew Hawkins 11:43

A few races on yesterday, with Harriers competing at most of them.

Lisa Kerr completed the Derry 10 mile road race in 1:34:56, winning a medal the size of a pizza in the process.

Carlingford was the venue for its popular (and usually wet and windy) half marathon yesterday:

Kevin Donnelly 1:23:35PB, Patricia Curistan 1:38:51PB, Ken “pacer” McAuley 1:38:51, Susan Thompson 1:44:42, Brian McDonald 1:51:30, Scott Dowling 1:56:56, Emily Dowling 2:08:25

Yesterday was also the completion of the East Coast AC Junior XC series. Eloise McAuley won all three of her races in the Minis Division and Tom Fleming won two from three to win the Juniors Division. Leo McAuley and Peter McCann also took part in the series. Good to see the future of the club is in safe hands!

Today was the turn of our headers division as several Harriers took part in the EAMS 6 Hour Challenge. Obviously running up and down the coast all day is not hard enough for the headers and so they decided to take on the Valley parkrun course instead. A wee flat course as Hilary described it to her (probably now ex) friend.

Some used it as a training run for upcoming marathons, others as a 30 mile tester as part of Ultra training for Connemara. The one with the headband does stupid stuff like this most weekends.

Hilary Faith and Mairead O’Hare both took part. Although I don’t have specific results, I know they were out there for well over 3 hours.

Suzanne Brennan and Sharon Dunn ran (and talked in one case) for 32.73 miles over the space of 5:41:29 hours. Amazing.

I could have sworn I saw that Micky McAuley managed 39 miles and won the event on the day. Well done sir, that is impressive.

Club Report – Sunday 24th February 2019

Well, the XC season has drawn to a close and most of the mud huggers have already stuck their spikes in a bag without cleaning them, not to be looked at or smelled again until October. Others abandoned most of their clothing at season end. But more later, parkruns first.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Tom Fleming 20:06, Adam McCann 20:55PB, Joe Mathers 22:43, Damien Cole 23:24, Noel Bloomfield 24:04, Jim Hewitt 26:06, Ryan McCready 28:43PB, Neil “good Daddy” McCready 28:47, Anita Piatek 29:50, Emily Dowling 30:14, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 31:40, Anne Boyd 43:42, Lorraine Forsythe 51:45, Jennifer Maguire 52:13, Owen Fulton 52:14

Waterworks parkrun:
Danny Donaldson 23:05, Ken McAuley 24:58, Susan Thompson 25:21, Tiffany Donaldson 34:51

Antrim parkrun:
Michael McFarlane 23:38PB, Deborah Ewing 28:44, Tina Steele 28:45, Angela Stevens 38:17, Elaine Kennedy 54:02

Portrush parkrun:
Neil Campbell 20:12 (and 3rd place), Laura Campbell 31:40, Fidelma McCoppin 33:46, Jackie McCreesh 33:59, Marie McFarlane 34:00, Freda Stubbs 38:27, Josi McKeating 38:55, Sharon Thompson 38:59, Patricia Kane 40:09, Deirdre McCann 45:22

Portrush junior parkrun:
Christopher Campbell 18:08

The last event in the Born 2 Run series took place yesterday at Castlewellan.
Published results do not include club name but I know about the following Harriers taking part:
5k:
Dermot HOTM Boyd 32:43, Jo Smyth 41:26
10k:
Catherine Mullan 1:02:03
Another gentle reminder folks to always post your non-parkrun results in Team App. I only have a small army of underpaid servants working for me and sometimes they don’t pick up on every result. And to be honest they’re not very good. Thanks.

One of our chief headers, Nuala Muldoon, celebrated her birthday as only she could. With a marathon. She completed the run4time Ballina event in 4:15:40. Happy birthday Nuala. Hope the celebrations are continuing.

Three Harriers decided running was just not difficult enough in itself and so took part in the Setanta Duathlon (2 mile run; 10 mile bike; 2 mile run):
Neil McCready 60:13, David Esler 78:56, Frances Kane 85:17

The beautiful and historic town of Lurgan was the location for the XC season closer, the NI & Ulster Senior XC Championship. A great crowd of Harriers boarded the party bus and, despite the rain, enjoyed (almost) every minute of the event.
Ladies 6k:
Laura Rose 25:49, Karen McKee 27:34, Sarah McCafferty 28:45, Suzanne Brennan 29:49, Pamela McCafferty 29:55, Sharon Dunn 30:01, Janine McNevison 31:35, Emily Dowling 32:26, Galina Stanevicius 34:11, Leah Burns 35:24, Louise Ladd 35:34, Leeanne Skillen 36:56, Roisin Brooks 36:56, Angela Stevens 37:06, Tiffany Donaldson 39:00, Mairead O’Hare 43:42
And 13th place overall in the ladies’ team event on the day.

Men’s 12k (yes, 12k!)
Lee O’Boyle 47:55, Prof Alan ROTM Ladd 49:50, Joe Mathers 52:13, Ramunas Stanevicius 52:48, Stephen Gallagher 54:42, Michael McAuley 57:34, Christiaan Spies 57:34, Danny Donaldson 57:35, Paddy Brooks 1:01:16, Alan Erwin 1:03:15, Brendan McGeown 1:06:11, Scott Dowling 1:06:52, Lord Ian Brennan 1:06:59, Paul Skillen 1:12:31
And 9th place overall in the team event on the day
More importantly the coveted 12th place went to newcomer, Scott Dowling. Benny and Lord Ian are not happy.

A big thank you is due to the team captains, Lee and Suzanne, who encouraged, bribed and downright abused most of us into doing XC this season. The numbers participating this year vs previous seasons is a reflection of their efforts. Hopefully next year will be even bigger and better.
And more thanks to Ian and Kevin for all their efforts making sure the gazebo was present and appropriately stocked! Final thanks to all those (and their mums) who provided post-race nourishment at every event.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report – Sunday 17th February 2019

As with most weeks lately, we start the report with yet another late result from the Donaldsons’ travels in the US of A. Springsteen doesn’t tour this long.

Fed up with parkruns and 5 milers, the two lunatics decided to take on the Florida marathon, Danny finishing in 3:52:43 and Tiffany in 5:48:56. Another one chalked up guys, well done!

Another late result I promised to catch up on was the Junior results from the Stormont XC event:

U13 Boys

Ryan McCready 7:47

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:

Prof Alan ROTM Ladd 19:00PB (and 2nd place), Ramunas Stanevicius 19:47PB, Tom Fleming 19:52, Joe Mathers 22:38, Laura Rose 22:53 (and first female finisher), Stephen Semple 22:54PB, Ken McAuley 23:45, Sarah McCafferty 23:54PB, Maeve Kennedy 24:17PB, Paul Skillen 24:49, Neil Campbell 24:51, Noel Bloomfield 24:58, Susan Thompson 25:01, Pamela McCafferty 25:03, Anton Piatek 25:07PB, Brendan McGeown 26:31, Jim Hewitt 26:33, Nikki Fleck 30:02, Angela Stevens 30:23PB, Yasmin Lynn 30:33, Terry McIvor 30:38, Leo McAuley 30:44, Suzanne Brennan 30:59, Sharon Dunn 31:00, Roisin Brooks 31:28, Oran McKee 31:32, Karen McKee 31:35, Emily Dowling 31:40, Frances Kane 31:59, Karen O’Boyle 32:12, Lisa Kerr 33:57, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 33:58, Fidelma McCoppin 34:47, Louise Ladd 34:50

And big congratulations to Laura on completing her 100th parkrun. And despite the lack of sausage rolls, the food on offer was delicious.

And well done Tom on your 150th parkrun!

Waterworks parkrun:

Nuala Muldoon 24:09, Michael McFarlane 24:50, Claire McCann 27:32PB

Victoria parkrun:

Neil McCready 19:33PB

Well done Neil – a lot of hard work has paid off with an amazing sub 20 time. PB smashed.

Antrim parkrun:

Alan Kerr 27:10, Tina Steele 29:11, Deborah Ewing 29:12

Queens parkrun:

Elaine Kennedy 47:16

Wallace parkrun:

Dermot HOTM Boyd 31:57, Anne Boyd 43:43

And ADav appeared at the Valley 28:00

There was a big fight on this week for the parkrun tourist crown. Aidy Hughes had a bit of a go with Dungannon parkrun in 26:06. Then Maeve Dunseath tried with Portrush in 26:57. The Donaldsons, obviously, were back at it, this time in Pensacola, Florida. Danny in 21:46 and Tiffany in a not always vertical 39:00. But the winner should be Sarah Ross who has finally found a parkrun in New Zealand. Sarah completed the Western Springs parkrun near Auckland in 24:56

Auckland is built on over 50 volcanos and has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world but the best thing I know about Pensacola is that they have a minor league baseball team called the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Class. Pensacola wins.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:34

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Rhys Kerr 15:51

Another event taking place both yesterday and today (and possibly tomorrow) is the Atlas Running Last One Standing Ultra at Castle Ward.

Representing our headers division was Hilary Faith. Hilary completed 38 miles in the event. Amazing. Big respect Hilary.

So, this week’s tune is for Hilary and all those who were, or still are, running at Castle Ward.

And no, I didn’t pick the Elton John song that has Bruno in the video. This song is better. Fact.

Club Report – Sunday 10th February 2019

The weather continued to batter us this week, mainly in an attempt to kill the club headers doing the XC at the weekend. But we’re too strong for that. More later.

Tidying up a late result from last week, the globetrotting Donaldsons took part in the Boston Super Sunday 5 miler. In Boston. Danny finished in 32:31 and Tiffany in 48:08

Taking on the remaining parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Joe Mathers 20:24 (and 3rd place overall), Nuala Muldoon 25:25 (and 2nd female finisher), Nikki Fleck 28:45, Noel Bloomfield 29:05, Philip Fleck 29:22, Marie McFarlane 33:26, Lisa Hamilton 33:27, Fidelma McCoppin 33:48, Sharon Thompson 34:51PB, Deirdre McCann 41:50, Galina Stanevicius 1:01:43
And big congratulations to Nuala Muldoon on completing her 200th parkrun. Nuala has now completed 95 runs at the Valley and rumour has it she is very close to memorising the full course!
How many Harriers have passed the 200 mark? I can only think of one other – he who cannot be fully named (A Dav). Can anyone confirm this?

Waterworks parkrun:
Stephen Semple 23:14, Robert Gould 24:01, Maeve Kennedy 25:00, Jim Hewitt 25:39, Susan Thompson 25:39, Ken McAuley 25:40, Claire McCann 27:59
And more congratulations, this time to Jim Hewitt on completing 100 parkruns.

Victoria parkrun:
Anita Piatek 27:50PB

Antrim parkrun:
Leo McAuley 26:41, Micky “my days at the top are numbered” McAuley 26:46, Tina Steele 29:08, Deborah Ewing 29:55, Jo Smyth 42:45

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Michael McFarlane 24:56PB

Orangefield parkrun:
Stephen Weir 31:212

Stranmillis parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 30:54

This week’s tourists are, once again, the Donaldsons as their seemingly unlimited tour of the States continues. This week they were in Florida at the Clermont parkrun. Danny finished 4th in 19:51 and Tiffany in 33:47. The course is along the shores of Lake Minneola, named after a type of citrus fruit don’t you know. Clermont is a site chosen by many elite athletes for training. Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin and now our own Tiffany have trained here.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:36, Leo “double up“ McAuley 9:45, Eloise McAuley 10:24PB

Saturday saw the latest XC meet, this time at the picturesque, mostly unoccupied these days, Stormont.
The weather gods were no match for our Mags as the winds dropped and the sun shone down on the mudbath that was most of the course. Everyone complained before and after and everyone loved it. Even Mairead.

Ladies Results:
Laura Rose 23:26, Karen McKee 24:51, Sarah McCafferty 25:40, Sharon Dunn 26:03, Pamela McCafferty 26:24, Maeve Dunseath 28:21, Suzanne Brennan 28:27, Galina Stanevicius 29:28, Joanne Milne 32:04, Angela Stevens 33:31, Leeanne Skillen 33:39, Mairead O’Hare 40:02, Louise Ladd 40:03

Men’s Results:
Lee O’Boyle 25:35, Neil Campbell 26:52, Joe Mathers 27:06, Prof Alan ROTM Ladd 27:39, Ramunas Stanevicius 27:48, Kevin Donnelly 28:47, Stephen Gallagher 29:09, Neil McCready 31:05, Patrick Brooks 32:31, Alan Erwin 33:12, Brendan McGeown 35:12, Jim Guinn 35:40, Lord Ian Brennan 36:51, Aidy Hughes 37:31, Richard Dunseath 38:25, David Esler 39:40

Lee did really well, blah, blah but we all know the real battle is for 12th Harrier home. Unfortunately, it was a hollow victory this time for Benny as Lord Ian was taken out early on. Either by his hamstring or a sniper, we’re not yet sure. And then Jim just got unnecessarily involved and it all got messy. Lurgan will be the most anticipated rematch since Rocky got back in the ring with Apollo Creed.

Junior results are not available at the time of writing so I will catch them up next week.

This week’s tune is for the headers. Mud and glory.
