Officially, the report is a few days later than usual to allow me to include results from Boston and Whitehead. Unofficially, its late as I’ve just re-emerged from a chocolate coma.

This is a new parkrun (4th event this week) near Downpatrick. Yes, I had to look it up.

And, it being Easter weekend, there were a few parkrun tourists this week (sorry Aidy, but Dungannon doesn’t count).

The Piateks were at Hogmoor Inclosure parkrun. Anton finished in 24:29 and Anita in 29:33. Hogmoor Inclosure parkrun is in Bordon. Yeah, me neither. Turns out it is in East Hampshire in the south of England (which is near France). Hogmoor Inclosure was often used for army manoeuvres. Luckily neither Anton nor Anita tanked on their runs, boom boom!

Nicky Fleck was at Clevedon Salthouse Fields parkrun (yes, I think someone is making these names up too) finishing in 31:09. This parkrun is in Clevedon near Bristol which I have heard of. This location has something to do with salt but, to be honest, I got bored and so have no further details.

So this week’s tune is for Kevin. I wanted to pick a band from Boston for him. It could have been Aerosmith, or the Pixies (sorry Lee), The Cars, The Lemonheads, even the mighty New Kids on the Block (a close 2nd choice – not). But I’ll take any chance to play this classic and its aptly describes how Kevin took on Heartbreak Hill. Mr Donnelly, we salute you.

In other racing, our very own Prof Ladd was back in the homeland, this time not running from hospital to hospital over the Pennines but at the Manchester marathon. Prof Alan finished in an amazing PB time of 2:48:11. Johnny Carey was also in the home of proper music and was also on a PB mission, finishing in 3:56:01.

But Alan wasn’t the only Harrier competing across the water. Fidelma McCoppin was in the home of rubbish football teams, taking on the London Landmarks half marathon in 2:29:34.

Closer to home, Ramunas Stanevicius took part in the Omagh Half marathon, finishing in 1:30:46.

Even closer to home again, Anton Piatek was pitying the fools who had to climb to Knockagh monument twice. Anton completed the two loop, 20 mile event in 3:18:02.

Finally, this morning saw the latest running of the flat and fast Titanic 10k:

Athletics NI and ChampionChip Ireland showing slightly different times. So I went with the quickest ones! And well done in particular to Adam, going sub 40 in his very first 10k. Time I retired, I think.

And in the kid’s 1k race, our own Emily Murphy had a podium finish, being the third girl home in 3:58. And this after her Waterworks 5k PB the day before. Well done Emily!

And one more gentle reminder that memberships (both new and renewals) are now overdue if not recently paid. Please pay up if you ever want mentioned here again.

And the membership officer knows where you live, so be afraid. Very afraid. Honestly. I’m not joking. I’m not. At all.

So thank you to Prof Ladd for going to Manchester this week and giving me an excuse to play a Madchester classic. A fairly obvious choice but good advice for everyone racing and long running this weekend. And a proper tune.

This week it was the turn Of Angela Stevens to take on the mantle of chief header. Angela took part in the first race in the WeRunWildNI Castle to Castle trilogy, running from Glenarm Castle to Carrickfergus Castle, a distance of 50km/31 miles and almost 4,000ft of elevation. Angela finished in 8:57:45. Time for a well-deserved rest, Angela!

So this week’s tune is a tenuous link to Mother’s Day.

No Mr T this year, definitely no Spice Girls.

Runner of the month – February 2022

Undeterred by Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin all sweeping through, plenty of hardy Harriers kept training throughout a weather-battered February. That commitment and hard work was duly recognised as a range of worthy candidates emerged.

“Nominating Alan Kerr for completing all four races in the Sperrin Harriers Winter Trail series, as well representing the club in a number of the cross-country races. Great to see Alan enjoying plenty of off-road racing with some great performances.”

Sinead also has taken on many XC events over the winter months and has excelled in each event. We look forward in monitoring her progress in the coming months and years ahead.”

But pipping Sinead at the post, Hannah Hope’s efforts earned plenty of praise.

“Hannah puts everything into her intervals and training, and her running pace is improving.”

“Fitting in running between work and further education, Hannah has progressed significantly recently and regularly sets herself running goals. She has attended some Tuesday sessions but more often Thursday sessions where she gives her all.”

“Hannah has been steadily increasing her mileage and pace over the last few months. It’s fantastic to see her regularly training again and making improvements week in, week out and entering races again after a tough couple of years nursing injuries. Long may it continue!”

“Hannah is often very hard on herself (like a lot of runners!) And doesn’t give herself credit for all her efforts and progress that she is making. She has been running longer and longer distances recently and just going from strength to strength! Well done, Hannah!!”

Congratulations Hannah on being voted February’s Runner of the Month, and well-done to everyone nominated. Keep up the good work!

Club Race Report – 13th March 2022

We think we have it bad with Paul’s Sunday routes but this week the Tennessee hills heard the conch again as the Barkley Marathons returned to Frozen Head Park. If you know, you know. If you don’t, go look up this race. The craziest, toughest ultra race there is. No finishers again this year. Last one was 2017 I think. But worth $1.60 of anyone’s money. Ain’t no Sealstown though.

In other racing, our very own Bernard McKeaveney was at the Walled City 10 Mile Road Race, finishing in a PB time of 1:23:30.

As Lee took a well deserved quieter week, our other header in chief was out this week instead. Micky McAuley, for it is he, took part in the 2022 Spud Run, a NIMRA Glenariffe Mountain Race sponsored by Glens of Antrim Potatoes. Sounds fun but you have to climb more than 1,200ft to get your bag of spuds at the end. Unfortunately, the results have not yet been cooked up and served so the time will have to wait til next week.

Also, for reasons unknown, Kevin Donnelly, owner of the fastest specs in the club, was in action in Navan at the Bohermeen half marathon. Kevin finished in a superb PB time of 1:20:21. Bohermeen means the smooth road so maybe he picked an easy one?

Before I finish, I should note that I was asked (i.e. physically threatened) by your lovely Membership Officer to remind you that is that time of year again and subscriptions are due.

Sure, where else would you get all the same pain, suffering, craic and camaraderie for less than the price of a thimble of fuel?

In the overall series, Eloise McAuley came second in the Minor Girls category and Tom Fleming won the Senior Boys category. Well done to both and to all the juniors who took part and represented the club so well.

This week saw the latest Shane’s Castle Atlas series of races. Elaine Kennedy took on the half marathon, finishing in 2:21:01 whilst Angela Stevens went the full distance in 5:04:12.

At the same time, Patricia Curistan was in Carlingford for the well established half marathon there. Patricia finished in 1:38:23.

But performance of the week has to go to our header-in-chief, Lee O’Boyle. (I think the O stands for Off his Rocker). Lee took part in the Transgrancanaria Classic, a race across the island of Gran Canaria. Just the 126km and 22,000 ft of elevation. And in the rain.

Lee finished in an amazing 20:18:08.

Martin McCready was at the first ever Derrynoid parkrun, finishing in 32:44. Well done to the new team at Derrynoid! This one is run in Derrynoyd Forest near Draperstown.

And Maeve Dunseath was at the Donabate parkrun, completing in a time of 26:03. This one takes place in the grounds of Newbridge House in Donabate, just north of Dublin. Newbridge House, a Georgian mansion, was a location for the 1965 Richard Burton film “The Spy Who Came in From The Cold”. (7.6 on IMDB folks!)

In other racing this week, Aidy Hughes dug out yet another Tyrone-based deep cut. This time it was the Mountfield Community Association 5k. Aidy finished in 26:34

Alan Kerr completed his tour of the Sperrin Harriers Winter Trail Series with the Parkanaur 10 mile race, the longest of the series. Alan finished in 1:39:06.

Three Harriers took part in the EAMS World Marathon event yesterday, all at the half marathon distance. Johnny Carey finished in 1:50:36 and Elaine Kennedy in 2:15:52 but the result of the day was Prof Alan Ladd who won the event with a crackin’ PB time of 1:20:08.

Club Race Report – 20th February 2022

Wind 2 weeks ago. Rain last week. Now this week we had both together.

Typical Mallusk. Again.And how come we are always running into a headwind, even on a circular route?
