Club Race Report – 17th July 2022

Wow, I’m really enjoying this really hot weather. Said no runner. Ever.
To be fair, I do usually meet new people when I go running in the heat. Usually paramedics.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Nuala Muldoon 25:48, Cathy Ryan 29:09, Sinead O’Hare 30:30, Emily Murphy 30:31, Bronagh Adjey 33:10, Ian Simpson 38:43, John Teer 39:25, Martin McCready 53:10
Waterworks parkrun:
Dawn Blain 24:24, ADav 24:26, Robbie (the young one) Gould 24:37, Rab (slightly less young) Gould 24:40, Elijah Cushley 26:12PB, Anton Piatek 26:16, Roisin Brooks 32:30, Susan Thompson 32:31
Portrush parkrun:
Nikki Fleck 33:52
Antrim parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 24:11
Carrickfergus parkrun:
Matthew Hawkins 28:45PB, Ciaran Hawkins 28:51PB
Sixmilewater parkrun:
Eloise McAuley 25:12 and first female finisher, Micky McAuley 25:25
Crawfordsburn parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 30:05
As you can imagine, we have several tourists this week.
David Graham headed west to Sligo to finish 3rd at the impressively named Sligo parkrun in 18:56. Kelly Carlisle headed east to the Barclay parkrun and finished in 43:23.
Barclay parkrun is in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, somewhere sort of north of London. Lena Zavaroni and Gino D’Acampo both live (or lived) in Hoddesdon so that definitely makes it A list country for me.
But our winners this week are Jim and Janet Grew. They completed the Mura di Lucca parkrun in 25:32 and 29:55 respectively. Unsurprisingly, this parkrun is in northern Italy, just north of Pisa and west of Florence. Lucca is the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini. For the 99% of club members who have never heard of him (philistines), he wrote operas including La Boheme and Madam Butterfly. Both complete bangers in their time.
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Emily Murphy 8:10 and first finisher, Sinead O’Hare 9:00 and third finisher, Matthew Hawkins 11:51, Riley Kerr 11:52, Joseph Eager 11:52, Rhys Kerr 15:29
Other running started on Tuesday when our pocket rocket, Eloise McAuley, was 1st female at the U16 (being only 9 herself!) Rith An Chairn mountain race. Definitely a chip of the old cliff face.
Friday night saw some Harriers head for the beach as they took on the Newcastle Sea to Sky events:
5k
Emily Murphy 24:03, Sinead O’Hare 26:57, Dermot Boyd 32:33, Mairead O’Hare 40:02
10k
Mark Smith 39:08, Anton Piatek 48:42, Ciaran Wright 48:49, Nuala Muldoon 54:29
Then yesterday, 11 Harriers lost their heads in the heat and took on the Greyabbey 12 hour challenge. So how far could you run in 12 hours?
Neil Campbell 56.7 miles, Stephen Gallagher 53.1, Suzanne Brennan 49.6, Angela Stevens 46.0, Bernard McKeaveney 46.0, Stephen Armour 46.0, Joanne Milne 42.5, Sharon Dunn 42.5, Laura Campbell 35.4, Leeanne Skillen 35.4, Neill McGlinchey 31.9
Finally, thankfully, this morning Kevin Donnelly headed south to Co Louth to excellently named village of Termonfeckin. Partly, he was looking for village native, Evanna Lynch, who was the criminally underused Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films. But mostly he was there to run in their half marathon. It was well worth the effort as he finished third overall in a time of 1:23:59.
To be honest, I haven’t been away at all. I just couldn’t be bothered to write the reports. Minimal thanks to Work Experience Boy for his barely adequate cover.
But I do love him really, so this one is for him. The words say it better than I ever could. Boke.

Until next week, maybe, behave.

Just as we all thought thank god the Cavillator will be back this week and give us a half decent weekly report, nope not yet, it’s been reported that they have been detained another week due to laziness. One last thing again from Mr Chairman about the club race on the 5th August, any members needing flyers be it for parkruns or races that haven’t got leaflets yet please see Bernard, Ian Simpson has taken on the role of race catering and he has already asked for some volunteers so please get in touch if you can help.
All that is left to say is please hurry up Cav we miss you and I’m running out of nice things to say, so this weeks tune is for Tom.

Club Race Report – 19th June 2022

The sun sort of came out this week. We sort of almost had a sort of Summer. But the nights will be on the turn soon folks. Anyhow, the glimpse of sun brought the Harriers out in numbers for Tuesday training, C25k, hill reps, parkruns, 10ks, hilly long runs, ultras and everything in between. Loverly.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
David Graham 19:06 and 2nd finisher (same time and same placing as last week!), Stevo Armour 21:07, Elijah Cushley 21:29, Eloise McAuley 23:59 (and first female finisher), David Esler 24:09PB, Neil McCready 24:39, Paul Skillen 26:31, Brendan McGeown 28:38, Clare Teer 28:51, Sharon Dunn 28:59, Leo McAuley 29:41, Joanne Milne 30:30, Cathy Ryan 31:03, Roseann McGeown 34:03, Martin McCready 35:03, John Teer 38:59

Falls parkrun:
Anton Piatek 25:04

On Thursday night we had our A team in action as Alan Ladd and Aidy Hughes took on the Lismore 5k in Craigavon. And, yes, Aidy had to get special permission to travel cross border from Tyrone to Armagh for the event. Alan finished 7th in 18:02 and Aidy finished in 25:25.
Friday night saw the latest event that counts towards our Club Championship (kerching again).
Comber was the venue; 10k the distance:
Ciaran Wright 44:28, Craig Goodall 46:35, Dermot Boyd 59:44PB, Janet Grew 1:00:08
Then on Saturday, Bernard McKeaveney decided that it was time that he became a header too. Bernard completed the 50k event within the Atlas Safety Solutions 24 hour event at Victoria Park in a time of 6:00:52. I note in the results he finished one place behind Liam Gallagher. Between him and Nish Kumar, Bernard did some amount of celeb spotting at this one. Well done Sir.
So this week’s tune is for David Esler and everyone else who ran up the hill twice at the Valley parkrun. And for those who survived Karen’s Sunday morning route. And for Stranger Things fans. And for Kate Bush fans. So that’s basically everyone in the world covered somehow.

Until next week, behave.

This week’s tourist is Karen McKee who travelled the whole way to Donegal to take part in the Narin Beach parkrun at Portnoo. Karen finished in 31:56. This parkrun is run entirely on sand. (Unlike Karen who usually runs entirely on gin). Brendan Behan reportedly spent time swimming here. I have not.
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Emily Murphy 8:04PB and first finisher, Sinead O’Hare 8:48PB, Joseph Eager 9:53, Riley Kerr 10:09PB, Matthew Hawkins 13:26, Rhys Kerr 17:36

On the same day, Elaine Kennedy took part in the 26Extreme Mourne Way Event, finishing the half marathon distance in 2:43:41.
Again, on a busy Saturday, it was the turn of Andrew McNevison to represent the club. Andrew was at the NIMRA Cairncastle Classic Fell Race at Ballygally. Andrew completed the 10 mile, 2,200ft elevation course in 1:33:26.
Finally, Stephen Gallagher took part in the Donegal Wild Atlantic Marathon today. This one goes from Killybegs to Glencolmcille beach. Stephen finished in an unofficial time of 3:48:41. Whilst Karen completed the half marathon in 2:03:15.
So this week’s tune is for Stephen and Karen and their big trips to Donegal. I don’t care what Daniel says or sings. This is the greatest song ever written about the place. Fact.

It was a great night, perfect weather conditions, relaxed atmosphere, well organised and even free Mars Bars. Oh yeah, and PBs!

This morning Ken McAuley headed south to Cork and completed their marathon in 3:46:18.
Our chief header was also back at it at the end of a busy week for the club. Lee O’Boyle completed the first Werunwild Norn Iron 100 event. This is an ultra race from Ballycastle across the Sperrins to Gortin. Not only did Lee complete it in 19hrs and 40 min, he only went and won it too. Congratulations Sir!
So this week’s tune is for all the parkrunners, at Antrim and elsewhere, and for those that helped organise and feed them. Harrier life!

Club Race Report – 29th May 2022

I’m disappointed in myself but I don’t think I have it in me to make any sarcastic comments about Liverpool fans this week given what happened both on and off the pitch last night. And that’s despite me getting here hours early to write something.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
ADav 24:28, Nuala Muldoon 24:51, Ciaran Wright 27:44, Ciaran Hawkins 28:18, Martin McCready 33:36, Joanne Milne 34:45, John Teer 38:17
Waterworks parkrun:
Bernie McAllister 27:39, David Esler 29:51
Victoria parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 20:08PB
Falls parkrun:
Anita Piatek 29:34
Portrush parkrun:
Stephen Armour 21:28PB, Sharon Dunn 30:00
Ormeau Park parkrun:
Susan Thompson 37:10
Antrim parkrun:
Stephen Semple 23:47, Maeve Kennedy 24:02PB, Elaine Kennedy 28:21, Riley Kerr 33:47
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 7:38 and second finisher, Emily Murphy 8:10 and third finisher, Sinead O’Hare 9:46, Matthew Hawkins 10:24, Andrea Bradley 13:55
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Eloise McAuley 8:40, Leo McAuley 10:30, Jessie Smith 11:13, Lexi Smith 14:06PB
Musgrave junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 9:03
There were 2 racing events this week, both of which form part of the 2022 Club Championship (kerching again), with the Mayfair races in Ballyclare on Saturday and Newry on Sunday.
The ever popular Mayfair event (absolutely nothing to do with the spread they put on) had perfect weather conditions and saw another great turnout from the Harriers:
5k
Tom Fleming 16:25PB, Emily Murphy 20:59, Brendan McGeown 21:13PB, Craig Goodall 21:28, Paul Skillen 22:38, Karen McKee 23:56, Aidy Hughes 24:51, Sinead O’Hare 26:50, Marie McBrien 28:41, Roseann McGeown 30:30
And great to see 2 juniors leading the way. Unless you’re one of the oldies they beat of course.
10k

Then on Sunday we had other Harriers in Newry at both 10k and half marathon distance:

Half Marathon

It takes place across 5 of the peaks of the Mournes and includes just the 4,500ft of elevation. Lee finished 7th in 2:45:14 and Micky 16th in 2:54:44.
So this week’s tune is another reminder about the upcoming Club Championship (ker-ching). Entries for the Ballyclare Mayfair races close this evening. So get in there and support your CLUB championship. Geddit?

And Leo’s 150th junior parkrun!
Bernie was nearly our parkrun tourist of the week (is Enniskillen foreign?) but thankfully I was saved, not for the first time, by Dermot Boyd. Dermot completed the Amsterdamse Bos parkrun in the Netherlands in 31:22. This parkrun, as our more cultured Harriers (both of them) may have guessed is in Amsterdam. It takes place in the Amsterdamse Bos park. Did you know it is three times the size of Central park in New York? Do you care? Fine.
Let’s hope Dermot enjoyed his time in Amsterdam and was able to see the sights and do the usual touristy things. I meant museums and pushbikes, people. Get your minds out of the gutter. Honestly!
The only other racing for the Harriers this week was at the first race of the Woodburn Forest Series. Elaine Kennedy finished in 28:15 with a wee course PB to boot.
So this week’s tune is for Dermot. Mainly because, y’know, it’s Dermot. But also because his Amsterdam trip gives me another chance to play this classic. David will probably hate this one.
