Club Run Report – 28th November 2021

This week it wasn’t just me suffering from wind as several parkruns also felt the effects. But that didn’t stop our XC teams or road racers as you will see below. It’ll take more than Arwen to blow them off course. Thank you, I’ll be here all week…..


Firstly, a late result off the Vidiprinter – last week’s XC Comber Cup at Billy Neill Playing Fields.

And we had tourists again this week. 4 Harriers headed east to the music capital of England (not up for debate),

Manchester. Taking part in the Peel parkrun were Stephen Armour 21:53, ADav 22:16, Sharon Dunn 30:34, Joanne Milne 30:35. Many of you will be familiar with Peel Park from the works of LS Lowry, obviously. But you may be more surprised to learn that the park was not named after famed DJ John Peel. Although it bloody should be.

There was yet another outing for the mudsuckers this weekend as several Harriers, both junior and senior, competed in the Malcolm Cup at Queens Dub playing fields.

But there was other racing this week too. Elaine Kennedy and Matthew Carvill took part in the Born2Run Loughgall 10k, Mathew finishing in 50:35 and Elaine in 59:25. And Dermot Boyd finished the Joe Duffy Clontarf 5 mile road race in 49:33.

I tried to think of a decent song about wind but I’ve done both of them before. So this week’s tune is for the famous four who headed to Manchester and are now declared the Harriers own version of ABBA. Enjoy.

And we finally had a tourist again this week. Obi Wan McCready was at Deerpark Forest parkrun, finishing in 37:20. The results stated this parkrun was in Virginia so I had visions of Marty running up the Blue Ridge mountains or crossing Chesapeake Bay. But no, he wasn’t in the home of the Algonquian and Laurel and Hardy, he was in County Cavan. So fairly similar then, just not as far away.

There was another outing for the mudsuckers this weekend as several Harriers competed, mainly for survival, in the Comber Cup at Billy Neill Paying Fields.

Unfortunately, results are not available until tomorrow so I’ll have to update next week.
And as usual, Tom Fleming was representing the club at national level, this time at the National Cross Country Championships in Santry. Tom finished in a more than respectful 36th place in the U16 4k race in 14:12.
So, this week’s tune is definitely not related to any recent footballing stories. (Come on, it’s been a quiet week on the running front!). And it’s a chance to play an absolute belter. Pity Utd can’t do the same.

Not exactly a race result but a big congratulations to Lee O’Boyle on being the NIURA Northern Ireland Ultra Running Association 2021 NI and U 100k men’s champion.

So, this week’s tune is for the Harriers who braved the elevation to admire the scenery of Glenariff Forest Park. Some may have had wine in their camelbacks; others may have been hitting the donuts but they all came back in (mostly) one piece. So they win.

Some Harriers claimed that Ballyboley Forest was haunted. Some told chilling tales of the ghostly cries of children heard in its woods. Some were heard screaming this morning but only with laughter when one of our hardy Sunday trail runners took a nosedive into the mud.

Last, but certainly not least, Angela Stevens was at it again, this time completing the Tour of the Island Half Marathon around Islandmagee in 2:33:21.


So, this week’s tune is for the unnamed Harrier who hit the soggy deck this morning. But remember, its not about falling down, it’s all about how you get back up and keep going. (Just remember to pause your watch though).

The shops are full of mince pies and selection boxes and the television is full of toy ads. It must be Halloween already!
That reminds me though, Social Boy needs some more names down for the Harrier Xmas Dinner.

XC season continued yesterday with the North Down AC Festival of Cross Country. The Harriers were represented at both junior and senior level:

Our perfect cousin was at it again this weekend. Kevin Donnelly took part in the Armagh 10 mile road race this morning. His unofficial time was 1:02:13

And I should also mention the achievement of Prof Alan Ladd and his brother Jonny. They both ran from Wheatfields Hospice in Leeds to Bolton Hospice in, er, Bolton. A distance of only 51 miles with a few inclines (i.e. The Pennines) included for fun!


This was to raise funds for both institutions who have looked after family members in the past.
So, this week’s tune could have been for Alan. It could have been for the XC juniors, it could even have been for Kevin again.
But no, this week’s tune is for Roseann and Marie. 2 Harriers who loved the Sunday trail run so much that they decided to try and stay in the forest all day. The rest of us did 6 or 7 miles. They did…. more.


One lap is never enough is their new motto. Ladies, we salute you (when we can find you).

It’s still marathon season, and this time it was the turn of the Shane’s Castle event. We had 2 Harriers on the course with Ciaran Wright finishing in 4:36:17 and Anton Piatek completing his first marathon in 4:36:30.
Not to be outdone by others last week, Bernard McKeaveney decided it was time to rejoin the headers by completing the EAMS Octoberfest event today. Bernard completed an amazing 50k in a PB time of 6:25:15.
So, this week’s tune is for our Kevin. Speedy specs finished first at the Waterworks parkrun in a PB time then headed off to complete a half marathon distance run then did XC the day after. Just what we expect from perfect Kevin at this stage.

It’s the weekend so it’s another 5k race for Aidy. The man must have more bling than the Kardashians by this stage. He certainly has more medals than his beloved Arsenal (sorry Aidy!). Mr Hughes took part in the Centra Run Together 5k in Ormeau Park today. Unofficial time of 26:40.


This weekend was a headers’ dream as the Belfast 24-hour event took place. Despite poor conditions at times there were some amazing performances from our own Harriers and from others.


Lee O’Boyle had a Top 10 finish with a distance of 128 miles. Unbelievable Jeff! Angela Stevens completed an amazing 57 miles. Micky McAuley completed almost 65 miles before having to pull out due to injury. Neill McGlinchey completed nearly 33 miles before the same fate befell him.

All completed ultra distances. All are complete headers. We salute you and your poor wee feet.


So, this week’s tune is for the 24-hour headers. Lee and Micky should appreciate this one. The rest of you, maybe not so much. But they’re headers and they’re right. Enjoy!

Today’s 10@10 has turned into tv@10, and 11 and 12 as we watch London on the tv and check for Belfast updates online. Or else we are out on the road shouting support, banging pans and ringing the obligatory cowbell. Whatever way we support the runners, marathon day always bring a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye. A bit like the bag drop queues.

Marathon season is upon us folks. Some have been delayed; others moved from Spring. But however they got here, many of us will be taking part in them in the coming weeks.

Our tourist this week is Sarah Ross. Our Scotland correspondent completed the Queen’s parkrun in 24:20. This parkrun is held in south Glasgow. Glasgow was founded by St Mungo, the patron saint of salmon. It has an underground called The Clockwork Orange and is the birthplace of both the ultrasound machine and chicken tikka masala (maybe). I also understand it has some football teams. Who knew?


Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 8:32PB and 1st finisher, Emily Murphy 9:20PB and second finisher, Kayden McClelland 9:33 and third finisher, Kobe McClelland 9:51, Matthew Hawkins 10:40, Sinead O’Hare 11:04PB


Waterworks junior parkrun:
Eloise McAuley 8:38PB, Leo McAuley 8:45, Hollie Brennan 16:21


In other racing, Anton and Anita Piatek both took on the Ecotrail 30k in Wicklow. Anton finished the hilly trail course around Bray in 4:11:22 and Anita in 4:50:11.


Today, our focus turned to Berlin. Bekele may have got his pacing wrong but Prof Alan Ladd certainly did not, finishing in an amazing 2:49:07. Karen McKee finished in 4:23:46 and Elaine Kennedy in 5:11:21.

Time to raise a few steins folks!


So, this week’s tune is for those who tackled the heat of Berlin today. I could use “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin but this is officially a Top Gun free zone (more of a Cocktail man myself, if I’m honest). I should use Bowie but we’ve done that before. So here’s one from a group of guys from Dublin who recorded this in Berlin. Not bad, but they’re no Prof Ladd.
