Club Report – Sunday 3rd February 2019

Another week of fighting the weather and the couch to get out on the roads. Even some of the parkruns suffered this week.

Taking on the remaining parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Neil Campbell 20:13, Laura “ice cream with a flake” Rose 23:48 (2nd female finisher), Nuala “really big ice cream with a flake” Muldoon 26:21, Neill McGlinchey 27:32, Emily Dowling 28:55, Lord Ian Brennan 28:56, David Esler 29:35, Angela Stevens 31:39PB

Waterworks parkrun:
Neil McCready 20:43PB, Tony McKeating 22:14PB, Maeve Kennedy 24:23 (3rd female finisher), Robert Gould 25:38, Claire McCann 28:19, Roseann McGeown 33:14, Sharon Thompson 35:09, Josi McKeating 35:30
Fair play to anyone PBing in those icy conditions.

Queens parkrun:
Jim Guinn 26:32

Stormont parkrun:
Hilary Faith 30:11

Orangefield parkrun:
Ken McAuley 22:09, Susan Thompson 24:40

Taking part in the first ever Stranmillis College parkrun was Elaine Kennedy 31:12. Good luck with the new parkrun guys!

This week’s parkrun tourists are Mr & Mrs Donaldson. Danny came first in the Delaware & Raritan Canal parkrun in 19:45 and Tiffany was second female finisher in 29:02. This parkrun is held in Somerset, New Jersey. Danny and Tiff have somehow managed to find a parkrun in the most unremarkable part of America. I cannot tell you anything interesting about Somerset NJ. I apologise. Or apologize if still in NJ.

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Matthew Hawkins 10:48PB

Yesterday the latest Born2Run event at Antrim Castle Gardens managed to survive the weather. The 10k was won by our very own Mark Smith in 34:45. Also competing were Ramunas Stanevicius 38:32, Yasmin Lynn 53:20, Galina Stanevicius 54:32, Lisa Kerr 54:24PB.
Jo Smyth represented the club in the 5k, finishing in 43:13

And, finally, this morning, a couple of Harriers took part in the Lagan Valley Charity 5k:
Laura Rose 21:47, Suzanne Brennan 29:28

Another tune in honour of the weather this week. I look forward to a different theme very soon. We all do.

Not to be outdone by auld Mark, our juniors were representing the club today at the East Coast Junior XC Series event:

Minis – 500m

This week’s tune is a classic and is in honour of the weather we’ve had for most of the week.

Club Report – Sunday 20th January 2019

Well, it was a week where we all took a breath and gathered ourselves after the big effort of organising and/or running a huge XC event. Then again, judging by Strava, for many it was a week of 5am alarm calls and running 7 miles every four hours. You know who you are!

One we missed last week was Adam McCann competing in the UUJ Indoor Sprints and Hurdles on Sat 12th. Adam came 1st in the U14 60m hurdles in 13:82. He was also 3rd in the U14 and U15 60m sprint in 9:66. Well done on both Adam!

I also now have the full junior results from our XC event. And they are definitely worth reporting!
Primary School Race
Joe Eager 2:58, Jasper Brooks 3:00, Leo McAuley 3:03, Oran McKee 3:06, Rory Brooks 3:12, Peter McCann 3:14, Keeley McGarry 3:21, Eloise McAuley 3:41, Riley Kerr 3:42, Matthew Hawkins 3:54, Amy O’Boyle 4:02, Lucy Fleck 4:40
U12 Boys
Tom Fleming 3:03 (2nd place)
U14 Boys
Adam McCann 7:58 (3rd place)

I missed Tina Steele out of the Mallusk XC results last week. Tina, my most profuse apologies. I have taken myself out the back and given myself a good kicking. And I still look forward to recording your results at both Stormont and Lurgan!

Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Neil Campbell 19:23 (second finisher), Tom Fleming 19:46PB, Laura Rose 22:57 (first female finisher), Noel Bloomfield 24:18, Nuala Muldoon 24:35, Emily Dowling 28:21, Frances Kane 30:58, Anita Piatek 33:14, Sharon Thompson 36:02, Marie McFarlane 36:02, Freda Stubbs 36:24, Fidelma McCoppin 36:24, David Esler 37:34

And big congratulations to Stephen for hitting the 100 parkruns total!

Queens parkrun:
Jim Guinn 25:44

Ormeau parkrun:
Neil McCready 21:14PB, Alan Erwin 26:42, Mairead “PB machine” O’Hare 32:54PB

Yesterday was the latest Born2Run event at Gosford. Our own Mark Smith gained yet another podium finish, coming second in 36:17. Well done (again) Mark! Ramunas Stanevicius continued his recent good form with 40:30 in the same event.
The results don’t record club affiliations in these events so please either post to Team App or come in the Top 3 to ensure you get included in the report.

The podium challenge continued today as Lee O’Boyle matched Mark’s 2nd place, this time in the Northern Velocity Garvagh 10k trail race in a time of 36:59. Well done Sir.

Mrs C wouldn’t let me post the video I wanted to do. Not being nice, she said. (Answers on a postcard…) So instead, here’s a tune to help you chill out after a week of long miles, early starts and double days. But remember, it’s not because I like you. Cus I don’t.

Until next week behave.

Runner of the month – December 2018

December ROTM nominations were dominated by two events, Cross Country and the Seeley Cup.

Suzanne Brennan was nominated for rounding up and leading the ladies XC team in to battle in the Athletics NI XC league.

Club newcomer Ramunas Stanevicius received several nominations for some excellent PBs, race performances and team XC participation. Definitely a Harrier to watch out for in the future!

Similarly, Kevin Donnelly and Lee O’Boyle received nominations for superb PBs in the Seeley Cup, strong XC results and a sprinkling of podiums for the club.

But there can only be one winner and in my opinion this one is long overdue!

He is one of the most consistent club attendees throughout the year at training, always puts in a great performance in races and has had some amazing achievements throughout the year.

Sometimes these performances go under the radar due to his modesty, but it has finally caught up with him this month and has not gone unnoticed by many voting Harriers.

December saw him finish off a great year in style with a blistering PB in the Seeley Cup and some brilliant runs in XC events, helping the men’s team to score some valuable league bonus points.

ROTM is… the one… the only… Joe Mathers!

Club Report – Sunday 13th January 2019

“Blow, blow, thou winter wind, thou art not so unkind as man’s ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, because thou art not seen, although thy breath be rude.”
So said my bro’ Willy Shakespeare. Probably after he visited Mallusk one January.
But even he would have been impressed, nay overwhelmed, by the sight of almost 500 headers out in the fields today for the Mathieson Cup and Shield event. But more of that later.

Overall the men finished 4th. Well done gents!

Full results for the juniors are not available at the time of writing but there was a second place finish for Tom Fleming in the U12 race and a third place finish for Adam McCann in the U14 race.

All those who helped organise the race, provided sponsorship, encouraged participation, set up the course and facilities, tried to wreck the gazebo, baked/provided food and drinks, marshalled, cheered everyone on, did timekeeping, provided results, served food and hot drinks and tidied up afterwards should give themselves a big pat on the back. A job well done folks.

This week’s tune is for all those who were brave enough to take on Mallusk’s weather in January. And won.

Club Report – Sunday 6th January 2019

My new year’s resolution is to be less sarcastic and more positive. How long do you think this fairy tale will last?!
Anyway, resolutions are like kids – more fun making than keeping. On with the results…

Late result from last week was Dawn Dubois completing the EAMS 10k on Sunday 31st in 1:21:50.
On the same day, our vest in the west, Aidy Hughes found yet another race none of the rest of us had heard of (not even Lee!). Aidy completed the Loughmacrory 5 mile race in 43:58 (unofficial).

Traditionally, the first race of the year is the Race over the Glens. Harriers were well represented as usual:
Lee O’Boyle 35:26 (11th overall and 1st place in M35 category), Joe Mathers 38:52, Stephen Gallagher 43:06, Nuala Muldoon 49:53

Citypark parkrun is in the lovely city of Craigavon, home of the roundabout and our local version of Milton Keynes. It has a dry ski slope and a petting zoo. I once saw Gloria Hunniford in Craigavon. There is nothing else printable that I can say about Craigavon. But I love Craigavon.

Well done to all those who managed to get 2 parkruns in this morning. Let’s see you keep that effort up all year now!

Club Report – Sunday 23rd December 2018

Yes folks, it that time of year again. The time when just three little words can strike fear into the bravest – “some assembly required”.
The time when nothing says Xmas like queueing for an overpriced German sausage outside City Hall.
My club mates have come round to our house every year for the last few Xmases. This year we’re doing something different. I’m going to let them in.

Seriously showing us big folks up here! Xmas PBs all round.

I know a lot of Harriers, both junior and senior, were at the Leg It Hazelbank Xmas Run today. Full result are not available as I write this so I’ll catch up in the next report.

You may be dreaming of a white Xmas but if it runs out, drink the red.
I’m off to find a present for the current Mrs C. I don’t know what to get her but I was told that the one thing women don’t want to find in their stockings on Xmas morning is their husband.
So keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and receipts for all major purchases. Here’s a lovely Xmas song to get you in the mood.
Happy Xmas Harriers!

Until next week, behave.

Harrier of the month November 2018

November has been and gone in the blink of an eye and many Harriers are getting into the festive spirit, some more than others as we seen from hungover XC.

Some Harriers stood out again in November, including Louise Ladd who was nominated for stepping up and being part of a fantastic ladies XC team, commitment to training and self improvement, oh and for delicious banana bread!!!

Next, Lee O’Boyle, for promoting XC and driving up the numbers for both male and female teams and in most races achieving the magic number of 12 per team. Massive difference from last year.

Karen McKee, was nominated for giving her fellow Harriers support during training and always will to help and volunteer in all club related activities.

Alan Ladd also deserved a shout out for always being there to talk through plans, concerns and training, he is a great asset to the club. Congrats again on the podium finish at Kirkistown Alan!!!

Harrier of the month can only go to one person and November’s winner, well and truly deserves it. Elaine Kennedy battled with injury during her New York Marathon training, but despite this, she completed her New York Marathon and raised an amazing amount of money for the Children’s Heartbeat Trust. The true heart of a harrier.

Congratulations Elaine there has never been a more worthy winner and good luck with your training for the London Marathon.

Until next month Harriers, have a great Christmas and we will see you all in 2019 for some more great running.

Runner of the month for November 2018

Karen McKee, Maeve Dunseath, Sarah McCafferty and Stephen Gallagher each received nominations this month for their positive attitudes and progress. Without a doubt it has been a great month for all four with regular training paying off across many distances and terrains, with some even braving the madness of the cross country.

As always of course, there can only be one winner and this month’s was a runaway victor. Alan Ladd has gone above and beyond this month, including PB’s and podium finishes in his achievements.

Alan’s first place finish at the Kirkistown half marathon is an example of what can be achieved with the right dedication and work. Congratulations Alan, fantastic running!
