Club Race Report – 28th August 2022

Another busy week for the Harriers. Looks as if a lot of you are getting as much racing in as possible before the return to school kicks in.
Taking on just the 11 different parkruns and 4 different junior parkruns this week were:

A couple of tourists this week to end off the Summer. Stephen Armour and Sharon Dunn were down in Down at the Rostrevor parkrun. Stevo finished in 21:38 and was 3rd finisher and Sharo in 28:20. Rostrevor is the birthplace of Ben Dunne who founded Dunne Stores. It is not known if Stevo and Sharo are fans.
Lord and Lady Brennan and Joe Mathers were even further away, heading west to the Falcarragh parkrun. Joe finished in 22:20, Lord Ian in 25:44 and Suzanne in 26:37. This is an Irish speaking area but these three have enough trouble with English to be honest. Especially as the evening wears on…
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Calum Murphy 10:38, Joseph Eager 11:11, Matthew Hawkins 11:12, Andrea Bradley 14:43
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Emily Murphy 7:53PB and second finisher, Leo McAuley 8:28
Portrush junior parkrun:
Rory Mason 9:14PB
Riverside junior parkrun, Ballymoney:
Coach Sinead O’Hare 9:33PB
On Friday night he was at it again as And Obviously Dermot Boyd took on the Portrush 5 mile race finishing in 49:36 (course PB).
Our headers department was on international duty this week as Team Headband headed off to France/Italy/Switzerland to run up and down some mountains. Micky McAuley completed the TDS at UTMB on Tuesday and Wednesday finishing a 147km course with 9,738m of elevation in an amazing 34hrs 43 mins. Not to be outdone, Lee O’Boyle completed the CCC 100k race at UTMB with 6,100m of elevation in an incredible 15hrs 43 mins.
On Saturday, a couple of Harriers got the ferry out to Rathlin to compete in the Rathlin 10 miler:
Gareth McLoughlin 1:26:35 and Bernard McKeaveney 1:36:00.
Also yesterday was the start of the weekend’s events in Larne as their half marathon continues to grow in popularity and stature. A new event was the Street Mile and our own Tom Fleming took the junior title in 4:46. Not a bad effort, especially after a hard run at ECOS parkrun the same morning.

The main event, the Half Marathon, took place this morning with several Harriers taking part:
David Graham 1:22:43, Alan Erwin 1:25:27PB, Paddy Shields 1:36:16, Stephen Smith 1:41:14, Sean Doherty 1:45:33, Ciaran Wright 1:45:58, Paul Skillen 1:49:36, Craig Goodall 1:52:01, Roisin Brooks 2:16:10

Let’s be honest, there are no good songs about Larne (insert own joke here). So this week’s tune is for the headband headers who were climbing mountains. In the dark. Just for the craic. Headers.

And great to see our C25k graduates continuing their training and now out representing the club on the roads.

Earlier today, it was the turn of Carrickfergus to be swamped by Harriers as many in the club took on the popular Storming the Castle 10k:

So this week’s tune is for our media officer. Yes, our very own Bernard McKeaveney finally made it official and got himself all married on Wednesday. Still waiting for the Harrier reception though…..

Club Race Report – 14th August 2022

It seems that the heat brings out the vests as well as the suncream. Another hot but busy week for the Harriers.

We finally had 2 tourists this week. Stephen Semple completed the Fairview parkrun in 25:00. This parkrun takes place on the north side of Dublin. Dublin is in Ireland. You’re welcome.
And Elaine Kennedy completed the Buncrana parkrun in 31:23. But more of that header later.
A reminder to all our newbies to please make sure you update your parkrun profile to show Mallusk Harriers as your club so that we can pick you up in the results. Cheers.

Eloise McAuley 8:22 and 2nd finisher, Leo McAuley 8:39 and 3rd finisher
Our busy week started on Monday with the Broughshane 5k.
It was another good night for our regular podium botherers, Tom and David.
Tom Fleming won the race in 17:14 with David Graham finishing second in 18:12.
Great to see the blue and green on yet another podium.
Obviously Dermot Boyd was also there. Dermot finished in 32:04.
Then on Friday, the vests were washed (hopefully) and back out for the Connswater 5 mile race:
Tom Fleming 27:47, David Graham 29:55, Sean Doherty 33:25, Aidy Hughes 42:43 and, obviously, Dermot Boyd 52:45. (I am now officially changing his full name to “And Obviously Dermot Boyd”).
2 events on Saturday, firstly the madness that is the Lurig run within the Heart of the Glens festival. It’s only 3.8 miles but a lot of that is straight up and down with over 1,000 ft of ascent (and descent) in quite a short space!
Anton Piatek 50:25, Karen McKee 53:20, Anita Piatek 1:01:26
Also on Saturday was the latest Born 2 Run event, the Dambuster series of races at Silent Valley.
5k
Emily Murphy 23:55 (2nd female finisher and 5th overall – superb running from our junior), Coach Sinead O’Hare 29:57,
10k:
Lauren Penman 1:09:14
10 miles:
Joe Mathers 1:26:56

May be an image of 6 people and people standing

Then this morning, 6 Harriers were lucky enough to be in the heavenly kingdom that is Craigavon, spiritual home of the roundabout. They were rocking the lakes and lough (more like sweating the flippin’ things) in both the 5k and half marathon:
5k
Aidy Hughes (as usual) 26:23
It is not known at this stage if Aidy has been able to sneak back over the border into Tyrone undetected. We will keep you updated.
Half marathon:
Kevin “The Cap” Donnelly 1:25:22, Alan “suncream” Erwin 1:28:49, Patricia Curistan 1:40:20 (and 5th female finisher), Brendan McGeown 1:45:29, Angela Stevens 2:35:15
Final result goes to Elaine Kennedy. Elaine was racing on Thursday. And Friday. And Saturday. And today. Elaine was taking part in the Quadrathon Quest, 4 half marathons in 4 days around various, and sometimes hilly, scenic routes of Donegal. Elaine had a total time of 10:30:35 and won herself a medal that would make Aidy blush.
So this week’s tune is for our new header, Elaine. Four halves in four days, in that heat. Much chocolate is both required and deserved. And a wee dance.

Until next week, behave.

Club Race Report – 7th August 2022

It was a busy week again with many highlights but, as usual, none were better or tougher than our own club race. Great to see it fully back post Covid and still going from strength to strength. But more of that later.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
David Graham 19:45 and 2nd finisher, Ciaran Wright 22:24, Joe Mathers 23:28, ADav 23:53, Stephen Semple 24:30, Nuala Muldoon 25:01, Clare Teer 29:08, Joanne Milne 29:09, Marie McBrien 29:41, Neill McGlinchey 30:51, Dermot Boyd 31:44, Mairead O’Hare 38:48, John Teer 39:19, Clare Gallagher 42:41PB, Martin McCready 59:38
Waterworks parkrun:
Lord Ian Brennan 25:02, Cathy Ryan 27:57, Stephen Murphy 41:18
Derry City parkrun:
Johnny Carey 24:00PB
Victoria parkrun:
Rab Gould 21:17
Wallace parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 27:49
Bangor parkrun:
Kelly Carlisle 39:44
Limavady parkrun:
Alan Kerr 26:24
Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 17:58 and first finisher, Craig Goodall 26:40
Obviously both well recovered from their Friday evening exertions. Fair play gents.
Limepark Playing Fields parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 21:35
And congrats to Limepark parkrun in Ballymoney on completing their first parkrun. Here’s to many more.
No tourists again this week. And due to previous legal restrictions, I can’t even make jokes about Ballymoney!
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Coach Sinead O’Hare 8:49, Matthew Hawkins 12:05, Riley Kerr 12:18, Joseph Eager 12:19
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 8:39, Hollie Brennan 17:23
Friday night was a busy night for local running. Full results for our own club race are posted elsewhere but we had some excellent results from the Harriers that took on the hill themselves:
Tom Fleming 28:31 (age category winner) and just missing out on a podium spot in 4th place, Mark Smith 29:49 (age category winner) , David Graham 30:14, Robbie Gould 33:58, Ben Davidson 35:03 (and age category winner), Craig Goodall 38:22, Lauren Penman 54:48
And, once again, a huge thank you to all the Harriers who volunteered in the build up and on the night or provided food and treats. And a special shout out to Ian and the team who gamely manned the BBQs for what must have felt like several days.
On the same night, some of our elite squad were in Downpatrick for the 5k:
Emily Murphy, 22:22, Coach Sinead O’Hare 23:02
Earlier today, we also had representation at the Feile 10k. David Graham finished in 37:20 and Brendan McElroy in 46:06
As we all know, Harriers love a wee hill, none more than Lee O’Boyle and Micky McAuley. On Saturday, Lee finished 9th in the BARFNI 77s in a time of 4:39:33. Micky finished 14th in 4:57:23. This is a 18ish mile race covering 7 peaks of the Mournes with 8,100ish ft of elevation
So this week’s tune is for everyone who made it up that hill on Friday, or across the Mournes on Saturday. Yes, we used this tune recently but it’s become a club anthem so we’re using it again.
Plus Vecna bears a strong resemblance to a certain Harrier on his long run this morning. Red wine, Indian meals and running don’t always mix, kids. Just say no.

Until next week, behave.
