Club Report – Sunday 1st July 2018

Sanity has returned this week. Mark Smith is back on a podium, the McCaffertys are back at 10@10 and several Harriers have a hangover today. Everything is right with the world again.

Looked as if everyone was saving themselves for a big weekend effort as there were no Harriers involved in any midweek races. (Or if there was they did not tell me about it on Team App!)

Maybe I wasn’t the only one wilting in the heat this week.

Adrian Hughes got the weekend off to a flyer at the Newell Stores 10k in Coalisland, with 52:22.

Valley parkrun:

Eamon Donaghy 23:41, Yasmin Lynn 27:44, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:44, Jasper Brooks 30:33, Anita Piatek 30:50, Stephen Weir 31:55, Rory Brooks 33:04PB, Roisin Brooks 33:04, (seems as if this parkrun has been sponsored by Brooks – geddit?) Janet Grew 33:08, Marie McFarlane 33:08, Fidelma McCoppin 33:11, Yvonne Thompson 33:46, Clare Teer 35:23, Mairead O’Hare 36:25, Lorraine Forsythe 50:05, Patricia Kane 50:09, Rosalind Stitt 50:09

Waterworks parkrun

Ken McAuley 22:57, Stephen Semple 23:12, Susan Thompson 23:46, Robert Gould 23:48, Jim Hewitt 25:35, Maeve Kennedy 27:20

Victoria parkrun:

Alastair CHO Houldsworth 29:15, Katherine Todd 48:11

Antrim parkrun:

Heather Barker 31:21

Stormont parkrun:

Jennifer McCoppin 31:07, Maureen Ward 36:13, Deirdre McCann 40:17

ECOS parkrun:

Dawn DuBois 36:51PB

Larne parkrun:

Elaine NY Kennedy 27:56

This week’s tourist/show off is Neil McCready who completed the Milano Nord parkrun in 22:27PB.

Not jealous at all. Let’s move on.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Results not yet posted. Will include in next week’s report.

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Riley Kerr 11:19 (one second off last week’s PB!), Aaron Ladd 16:04PB.

Over in the headers’ corner it was Micky McAuley’s turn to try and break himself as he took on the 12.4 miles and 1,400m ascent (metres, not feet Strava fans!) of the Spelga Skyline Mountain Race.

In “slightly warm” conditions Micky survived and came home in 22nd place in 3:56:57.

But the club highlight of the running week was the revived running of the Antrim Road Coast Road Marathon.

13 Harriers braved the tropical conditions and many were awarded with PBs for their efforts:

Mark ROTM Smith 2:50:26PB and 2nd place overall. Congratulations Mark. A great run!

Neil Campbell 3:08:37PB, Lee O’Boyle 3:14:29PB, ADav 3:17:40, Alan Ladd 3:39:15, Laura Rose 3:42:40PB, Danny “everyone loves a redhead” Donaldson 3:50:01, Sarah Ross 3:51:44PB, Sarah Knowles 3:51:45PB, Jonny Smith 4:16:49, Deborah Ewing 4:26:48, Alan Kerr 4:26:48, Tiffany Donaldson 5:10:28PB

Everyone has been very positive about the Larne AC event and it is already heavily rumoured to be an annual fixture going forward.

I was going to finish with the 1999 Len Classic “Steal My Sunshine” but then realised there was only one song to salute those who took on the roads and mountains in the heat yesterday. Enjoy. You deserve it.

Club Report – Sunday 24th June 2018

Obviously, the big news of the Harrier week is that the McCaffertys missed a 10@10. The appropriate authorities have been informed. But, as we await news of their fate, onto the running….

Then on Thursday evening Matt Allen took part in the Grant Thornton Airport 5k, finishing in 21:17 and Joe Mathers took 5th place in the St Benedict’s College 5k in Randalstown in 20:14.

Not finding the Valley hill enough of a challenge, our female header-in-chief, Nuala “thought I’d only entered the half” Muldoon took on the South Armagh Twin Peaks marathon. As the name may subtly suggest, it is not flat. Nuala completed it in 5:26:03.

Our triathlon brethren were also out in the sun today, with Paul “the ton up” Skillen completing the Carrick Castle Sprint Triathlon in 1:30:47, Damien Cole in 1:31:08 and Frances Kane 1:43:14.

So last week it was Father’s Day but this week has been about brothers. Whether its Brooks, Skillen or Chemical. This one’s for you all.

Club Report – Sunday 17th June 2018

A strange week for your favourite results report as Mark Smith did not have any podium finishes.
One podium finish that did happen though was Club Captain Suzanne Brennan achieving second place in the Newforge 10k on Wednesday night in 51:50.
Rumours that Suzanne is attempting to legally change her name to Lady Mark Brennan are still being investigated.

The club undertook its first parkrun tourism of the year as many Harriers headed for Stormont (9 of them for the first time). Some headed there last week too but let’s move on!
Danny “the redhead” Donaldson 19:14PB, Neil “I thought his head was a stop light” Campbell 19:18, Laura Rose 22:14, Ken McAuley 22:45PB, Susan Thompson 23:38, Gabrielle McMillan 23:39, Sharon Dunn 23:58, Tony McKeating 24:32, Wes Barker 25:49, Owen Fulton 26:12, Nikki Fleck 26:39, Fidelma McCoppin 30:38PB, Joanne Milne 30:48, Tiffany Donaldson 32:30PB, Patricia Kane 36:22, Rosalind Stitt 36:22

And ADav went to Antrim 20:31.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:25, Leo McAuley 13:03, Eloise McAuley 17:03

I’m off to watch more football but will leave you with a really bad song from the 1974 World Cup.
Because you’re worth it.

Club Report – Sunday 10th June 2018

I need to start this week by catching up with a few results that came in too late for last Sunday’s report.

Let’s not forget that one of our juniors was at the latest Lagan Valley Firmus Fab 5 meeting back on May 31st:
U13 Boys 75m
Adam McCann 16:19 (winner) McCann the man!

U13 Boys Mile
Adam McCann 6:06

U13 Boys Shot Putt
Adam McCann 4.40m

Last Sunday saw some Harriers head upwards for even more sun as they tackled several Divis Mountain distances in the NBH Run DMC Trail Races:

9 mile “Senior Header” race:
Emily McKeown 1:41:52

7.5 mile “Junior Header” race:
Karen McKee 1:05:40 and 3rdlady home – well done Karen!

Mark Smith 27:58PB (and 5th place overall), Lee O’Boyle 31:41PB, Angela Stevens 45:43, Dermot Boyd 54:51

On the same night, the club was ably represented at the Craigavon Lakes 10k by Nuala Muldoon 52:34

Let’s just put a hold on the parkrun results for a moment.
Let me take you back to the colder days of Nov 12th 2017.
I quote from the wonderful report of that week:

Fairview parkrun:
The Brennans headed to Dublin for what seems to be a lot of drinking in green sports tops. Rugby may have been involved but this is yet to be proven.
Suzanne Brennan 24:49, Ian Brennan 24:56
Ian, your day will come. And when it does, men all across the club will sing your name.

Okay, let me bring you back to the present day:

Waterworks parkrun
Patrick McGuckin 21:40, Lord Ian Brennan 23:26PB, Stephen Semple 23:37, Jim Hewitt 26:18, Maeve Kennedy 28:21, Jo HOTM Smyth 46:14
Yes, write down the date to tell your children. This week Lord Ian beat his wife’s 5k PB. He is obviously in a LOT of trouble but let’s just enjoy it for now. From a safe distance. If I stop typing for a few seconds I can definitely hear male voices echoing over the hills of Mallusk. Lord Ian, we salute you.
Antrim parkrun:
Wes Barker 21:02PB, Nikki Fleck 26:52, Elaine NY Kennedy 29:34, Jennifer McCoppin 31:38, Debbie Sterritt 32:58, Janet Grew 33:15, Fidelma McCoppin 33:52, Marie McFarlane 33:56

This week’s tourists were Adrian Hughes who completed the MUSA Cookstown parkrun in 23:37 and Dawn DuBois who completed the Ecos parkrun on 37:13PB.

And ADav was at the Valley 22:36. And well done on your 4th round knockout young man!

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Ryan McCready 9:35, Joseph Eager 10:02, Matthew Hawkins 11:28, Leo McAuley 13:31, Eloise McAuley 13:51

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Riley Kerr 11:29PB

Also on Saturday, the growing triathlon branch of the club were in action with Damien Cole who took part in the Crooked Lake triathlon in Camlough.

So, this week’s aptly named tune is in honour of Lord Ian’s achievement.
Take it away lads.

Currently, the results for Thursday’s junior Firmus meeting and today’s Run DMC hill race are not available. I’ll catch these up next week.
Please don’t forget to help by adding your non-parkrun results to Team App especially in races where the club name is not noted. Plus let us know if you managed a PB!

So, this week’s tune is for Mark Smith who has earned 3 third place podium finishes in the last ten days.

Club Report – Sunday 27th May 2018

Plenty of running this week, both mid-week and over the weekend.

Wednesday evening was the Bann 10k. Our only entrant was Mark Smith who gained yet another podium finish coming home third in 35:41. Well done (again) Mark!

However, this effort was eclipsed by newbie Mark McIlroy who won the dad’s race at his son’s sports day. Won, not third!
No time, distance or even proof is available but we don’t care. The battle of the Marks is ON!

Friday evening saw the Runher Coastal challenge in Bangor/Holywood. There were 5k and Half Marathon distances but our ladies focused on the 10k:
Suzanne Brennan 59:08 (no 5k PB included), Heather Barker 1:05:13, Zoe O’Prey 1:21:16, Lisa Thompson 1:21:44, Mairead O’Hare 1:24:20, Claire Skillen 1:24:22

Saturday saw a crowd of Harriers head over to nearby Ballyclare for the Co Antrim Harriers Mayfair events. Most went for the food afterwards but did run just to take the bad look off themselves. Enjoying (?) the heat but keeping their taps on were:
5k:
Danny Donaldson 18:30 (and 4th place overall), Neil McCready 20:58PB, Tiffany Donaldson 30:15, Debbie Sterritt 32:57, Patricia Kane 35:50, Rosalind Stitt 35:50, Maureen Ward 39:35, Deirdre McCann 39:37, Miriam Clarke 39:47
10k:
Lee “I love big hills on a Sunday” O’Boyle 42:06, Joe Mathers 42:37, Terry McIvor 46:44, Damien Cole 46:44, Eamonn Donaghy 46:46, Brendan McGeown 48:05, Angela Stevens 50:51, Owen Fulton 50:57, Nikki Fleck 54:57, Yasmin Lynn 57:02, Neill McGlinchey 1:00:30, Anita Piatek 1:01:09, Frances Kane 1:01:28, Lisa Kerr 1:02:03, Fidelma McCoppin 1:03:28, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 1:03:58, Dermot Boyd 1:06:55, Jennifer McCoppin 1:09:28, Freda Stubbs 1:09:41, Josi McKeating 1:09:40

And ADav was at the Valley 25:02

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 10:19, Leo McAuley 12:56, Eloise McAuley 13:00
And well done Leo on completing your 50th parkrun!

Sunday did not see the end of the racing as several Harriers headed south to Newry to take part in the Half Marathon:
Mark Smith 1:17:57 gaining his second podium finish of the week with third place overall (in your face Mark McIlroy ). Great running Mr Smith!
Sarah Knowles 1:46:04, Joe Mathers 1:56:39, Joanne Milne 1:56:51PB, Brian McDonald 1:59:17, Emily McKeown 1:59:37, Elaine Kennedy 2:05:34, Roisin Brooks 2:10:14, Karen McKee 1:47:25, Sharon Dunn 1:56:39
Apologies if I have missed anyone but the club name was missing for most of you.

And our own merchandising wizard headed off to Edinburgh to try their Guinness, laugh at their rugby team and possibly run the Half Marathon:
Ian Simpson 2:57:38

There were also two Harriers who took on the Blackrock Triathlon in Co Louth today, with Damian Cole finishing in 1:06:54 and Frances Kane in 1:22:43

I would like some credit at this point. Not for the consistently high standard of my reports, not even for sitting inside typing it whilst you are all drunk and sunburnt in the garden but for the fact I have got this far without making any jokes about Liverpool. Cavillator, I salute me.

So here’s a tune to celebrate one of the acts playing at this week’s successful music event at our own Titanic slipway.
It has definitely nothing to do with football.

Club Report – Sunday 20th May 2018

It seems that whilst your reporter sits silently and alone in the empty mansion that is Chez Cavillator, may of you Harriers are out there running with your better halves. In this week of weddings and couples, just remember, if you have someone who gives you the same feeling you get when you see your food approaching in a restaurant, you’re a winner.

Valley parkrun:

Neil Campbell 20:11, Terry McIvor 23:17, Eamonn Donaghy 23:18, Owen Fulton 25:00, Adrian Hughes 25:16PB, Ken McAuley 25:18, Sarah Ross 25:37PB, Emily McKeown 27:00, Clare Teer 28:52, Frances Kane 29:12, Anita Piatek 29:25PB, Neill McGlinchey 29:46, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:48, Laura Campbell 30:31, Freda Stubbs 33:33PB, Fidelma McCoppin 33:34, Joanne Milne 34:20, Jim Hewitt 55:25

Waterworks parkrun

Tony McKeating 24:15PB, Maeve Kennedy 27:59, Josi McKeating 33:52, Jennifer McCoppin 34:01

Victoria parkrun:

Micky McAuley 19:44PB

Micky usually runs more vertically than circularly (?) but has done previous parkrun locations in 20:06, 20:03 and 20:00.

He made sure he was not beaten by the “parkrun second” this time though. Well done Micky on your first sub 20!

Ecos parkrun:

Dawn Dubois 37:47PB

Queens parkrun:

Dermot Boyd 31:50PB

Carrickfergus parkrun:

Owen Millar 28:55

This week’s tourist was Alan Ladd who completed the Cuerden Valley parkrun near Preston in 24:16. Jonny and Philip Ladd also completed the course in the same time. Alan states he let Jonny win seeing it was his wedding day. We know the truth.

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 10:14, Leo McAuley 11:03PB, Eloise McAuley 15:02

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Riley Kerr 12:10PB

Friday saw the running of the Les Jones Memorial 10k.

It was another successful night for Mark Smith as he achieved yet another podium finish, coming second in 35:20. Well done Mark.

Joe Mathers also ran for the club finishing in 43:25

On Saturday, Nuala Muldoon took part in the inaugural Scarva House 10k in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Nuala finished in 58:40.

Suzanne and Lord Ian Brennan headed off to sunny Manchester to take on Mo Farah and the Manchester Half Marathon this morning. Despite the hot conditions, both finished sub 2 hours, Suzanne 1:57:18 and Ian 1:59:44PB (and containing a potential 5k PB). Suzanne’s performance is all the more impressive given her recent loss. We salute her manky old hat. It will not be missed.

Not to be outdone, our other running couple, Mr & Mrs D, headed off to Liverpool and after warming up with a wee 5k on the Saturday (27:06 and 34:37) just went and did the full marathon as well today. Danny completed it in 3:42:35 and Tiffany in 5:20:36. Well impressive folks.

Here’s a tune for our Liver lovebirds.

Club Report – Sunday 13th May 2018

Well, after all the excitement of the Belfast marathon and relays, this week was a bit quieter. No doubt you, like me, were just spending the week getting physically and emotionally ready for the Eurovision song contest. Never mind marathons, if you want to see humankind at its finest, going above and beyond the limits of human endurance, then Eurovision has it all.
Netta, we salute you. Sort of. Anyhow, running…

And A Dav went to the Valley 21:55.

So, this week Lee O’Boyle thought he was our parkrun tourist completing Portrush parkrun in 19:53.
But then Stephen Weir went to Newcastle 32:29.
However, both were well outdone by Susan Thompson and Ken McAuley who, accompanied by a club fleg, got as far as Crissy Park parkrun in San Francisco. They finished in 24:46 and 24:47 respectively with Susan using the occasion to complete her 100th parkrun. Well done! Enjoy the rest of the trip.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 10:30, Leo McAuley 11:45, Eloise McAuley 12:18PB (3rd week in a row!), Riley Kerr 13:21, Aaron Ladd 17:11PB

I’m still recovering from what was obviously a dodgy “protein shake” yesterday, so whilst I crawl back under the covers, you can listen to this west coast classic.

Club Report – Monday 7th May 2018

Taps Aff! The week started with the now traditional drenching of the first night of the club’s latest C25k scheme but ended in the sunshine with the many achievements of the Harriers at the Belfast marathon. More of that later but first the results from Friday & Saturday.

NI Running Mile
Almost 200 runners headed for the Mary Peter’s track on Friday evening to see how close to the magical 4 min mark they could come over the classic mile distance.
Tom Fleming 5:32, Matt “paced by the roadrunner meep meep” Allen 5:48, Neil McCready 5:56, Ryan McCready 7:26, Owen Millar 8:17, Ryan Millar 8:17

Valley parkrun:
Liam McGowan 22:50, Neil Campbell 22:51, Ben Davidson 23:29, Nuala Muldoon 25:28, Terry McIvor 27:31, Susan “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” Thompson 27:46, Owen Fulton 27:47, Sarah Ross 27:48, Frances Kane 29:05, Deborah Ewing 29:47, Tina Steele 29:47, Roisin Brooks 29:54, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 30:28, Yvonne Thompson 34:49, Stephen Weir 34:51, Rosalind Stitt 37:12

Waterworks parkrun
Danny Donaldson 19:42, Micky McAuley 20:03, Neil McCready 22:53, Tony McKeating 24:33PB, Jim “more comebacks than Rocky” Hewitt 27:28, Paul “ice cream with a flake” Skillen 30:36, Lord Ian Brennan 33:11, Suzanne “he only beat me cus I wasn’t trying” Brennan 33:17, Tiffany Donaldson 33:18, David McCavana 36:52

Victoria parkrun:
Nikki Fleck 40:29, Aimee Fleck 40:30, Lucy Fleck 45:46
Well played family Fleck! Again!

Elaine Kennedy 26:57, Dermot Boyd 31:59PB

Colin Glen parkrun:
Jackie McCreesh 32:36PB, Marie McFarlane 32:45, Fidelma McCoppin 32:46

And A Dav went to the Valley 23:33.
It goes against every fibre of my being to say anything nice about this beautiful man but even I must acknowledge his achievement of completing his 200th parkrun. For a man who can’t even remember to bring shorts to a marathon this is indeed worthy of note. We can only be thankful there was no speech. Yet.

This week’s parkrun tourist was Lisa Kerr who completed Portrush parkrun in 29:58

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 10:24, Leo McAuley 11:34, Eloise McAuley 12:27PB (2nd week in a row!)

Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Tom Fleming 7:29PB and 2nd place
Well done, obviously not put off by his efforts on Friday night.

And so, to the Belfast Marathon.
The sun shone and the crowds and hoses came out, mainly to see 22 Harriers doing the full thing along with our 4 relay teams and a few others running with work and charities.
First home was Mark Smith in 2:53:48, a PB and a club record I believe. Great run after London. He must be well sick of the sun by now.
Also putting in great performances after London were A Dav 3:15:27 and Neil Campbell 3:18:32.
Then Lee O’Boyle 3:27:51, Micky McAuley 3:53:45, Dave Gibson 4:02:29, Karen McKee 4:07:03, Emily McKeown 4:07:05, Sarah Ross 4:12:46, Suzanne Brennan 4:17:49, Sharon Dunn 4:17:49, Deborah Ewing 4:19: 19, Tina Steele 4:19:37, Darren Taggart 4:23:19, Gillian Bainbridge 4:29:47, Terry McIvor 4:32:54, Nikki Fleck 4:40:01, Angela Stevens 4:44:57, Lord Ian Brennan 4:52:18, David Esler 5:47:43

Great runs by all, especially in that heat. And great to see some folk sneak in just under some big time targets.
Our relay teams also did us proud with the A Team coming home in 28th place in the team event in 3:07:54 (Wes Barker, Brian Coney, Matt Allen, Eamon Donaghy, Laura Rose).
Team B 3:52:57 (Owen Fulton, Duncan Baxter, Sarah McCafferty, Stephen Semple, Tony McKeating)
Team C 3:55:14 (Gabrielle McMillan, Yasmin Lynn, Hannah Hope, Lisa Kerr, Pamela McCafferty)
Team D 4:51:02 (Michael McFarlane, Kelly Carlisle, Mairead O’Hare, Dawn Dubois, Lee-Anne Hutchinson)
To quote Frank Shorter “You have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can’t know what’s coming.” Dublin is on Oct 28th. Entries are open.

Until next week, behave.

There was a great turn out for the 10@10 this morning as some Harriers did their final fine tuning for next week’s Belfast marathon. Some were prepping for the relay, others were running off hangovers and others just ran about getting lost. And all in the sunshine Lovely stuff.

And just remember out there next Monday, it always seems darkest just before

it turns pitch black.
