A very well done to you all, C25K is still going for the next few weeks so if you can spare an extra hour after training to encourage the runners its very much appreciated, You will also have seen from Mr Chairman that our club race is on the 5th August so i’m sure you will hear more in time about what help he needs so keep an eye out. Thats it from me hopefully The Cavillator will be back next week.

Club Race Report – 19th June 2022

The sun sort of came out this week. We sort of almost had a sort of Summer. But the nights will be on the turn soon folks. Anyhow, the glimpse of sun brought the Harriers out in numbers for Tuesday training, C25k, hill reps, parkruns, 10ks, hilly long runs, ultras and everything in between. Loverly.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
David Graham 19:06 and 2nd finisher (same time and same placing as last week!), Stevo Armour 21:07, Elijah Cushley 21:29, Eloise McAuley 23:59 (and first female finisher), David Esler 24:09PB, Neil McCready 24:39, Paul Skillen 26:31, Brendan McGeown 28:38, Clare Teer 28:51, Sharon Dunn 28:59, Leo McAuley 29:41, Joanne Milne 30:30, Cathy Ryan 31:03, Roseann McGeown 34:03, Martin McCready 35:03, John Teer 38:59
And congrats to Mr Esler on completing his 100th parkrun, with a wee PB in the process.
Waterworks parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 24:28, Kevin Donnelly 25:54, Rory Brooks 29:15, Jasper Brooks 29:41, Roisin Brooks 31:28
Falls parkrun:
Anton Piatek 25:04
Sixmilewater parkrun:
Tom Fleming 16:36PB and first finisher, Prof Alan Ladd 18:43 and third finisher, Robbie Gould 19:23PB, Robert Gould 21:11PB
Knockbracken Reservoir parkrun:
Stephen Murphy 23:00, Sinead O’Hare 24:13, Mairead O’Hare 37:11
Garvagh Forest parkrun:

On Thursday night we had our A team in action as Alan Ladd and Aidy Hughes took on the Lismore 5k in Craigavon. And, yes, Aidy had to get special permission to travel cross border from Tyrone to Armagh for the event. Alan finished 7th in 18:02 and Aidy finished in 25:25.
Friday night saw the latest event that counts towards our Club Championship (kerching again).
Comber was the venue; 10k the distance:
Ciaran Wright 44:28, Craig Goodall 46:35, Dermot Boyd 59:44PB, Janet Grew 1:00:08
Then on Saturday, Bernard McKeaveney decided that it was time that he became a header too. Bernard completed the 50k event within the Atlas Safety Solutions 24 hour event at Victoria Park in a time of 6:00:52. I note in the results he finished one place behind Liam Gallagher. Between him and Nish Kumar, Bernard did some amount of celeb spotting at this one. Well done Sir.
So this week’s tune is for David Esler and everyone else who ran up the hill twice at the Valley parkrun. And for those who survived Karen’s Sunday morning route. And for Stranger Things fans. And for Kate Bush fans. So that’s basically everyone in the world covered somehow.

Until next week, behave.

This week’s tourist is Karen McKee who travelled the whole way to Donegal to take part in the Narin Beach parkrun at Portnoo. Karen finished in 31:56. This parkrun is run entirely on sand. (Unlike Karen who usually runs entirely on gin). Brendan Behan reportedly spent time swimming here. I have not.
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Emily Murphy 8:04PB and first finisher, Sinead O’Hare 8:48PB, Joseph Eager 9:53, Riley Kerr 10:09PB, Matthew Hawkins 13:26, Rhys Kerr 17:36
And well done Sinead on the weekend PB double!
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Jessie Smith 11:34
Yesterday, Tom Fleming represented the club at the NI & Ulster Age Group Championships. Tom finished 1st in the U16 Boys 3000m in a time of 9:47.
On the same day, Elaine Kennedy took part in the 26Extreme Mourne Way Event, finishing the half marathon distance in 2:43:41.
Again, on a busy Saturday, it was the turn of Andrew McNevison to represent the club. Andrew was at the NIMRA Cairncastle Classic Fell Race at Ballygally. Andrew completed the 10 mile, 2,200ft elevation course in 1:33:26.
Finally, Stephen Gallagher took part in the Donegal Wild Atlantic Marathon today. This one goes from Killybegs to Glencolmcille beach. Stephen finished in an unofficial time of 3:48:41. Whilst Karen completed the half marathon in 2:03:15.
So this week’s tune is for Stephen and Karen and their big trips to Donegal. I don’t care what Daniel says or sings. This is the greatest song ever written about the place. Fact.

Well, I hope you’ve all been celebrating the big platinum anniversary this week. Yup, 70 years since the first pop music charts were published.
(Al Martino’s “Here in my Heart” was the first ever number one if you’re wondering. Not exactly a banger to be fair).
Also 70 years since Emil Zatopek set a marathon world record of 2:23:03 at the Helsinki Olympic Games for the runners amongst you.

Much appreciated on a warm day.

In other racing this week Elaine Kennedy completed the Woodburn Trail Series on Tuesday evening, finishing the third and final race in 46:53.
Wednesday evening saw several Harriers turn on the subtitles and head to Magherafelt for the latest friendly 5000s event. This one was held by Tafelta AC and was attended by Tafelta, Keep Er Lit Running, North Belfast Harriers, Victoria Park & Connswater AC, Galbally Runners and Purvis Running as well as 12 of our very own Harriers.
It was a great night, perfect weather conditions, relaxed atmosphere, well organised and even free Mars Bars. Oh yeah, and PBs!
Race 1:
Marvel (that name’s gonna stick) Mullan 25:11, Aidy Hughes 25:17, Sinead O’Hare 26:03
Race 2:
Brendan McGeown 21:12PB, Rab Gould 21:15, Ciaran Wright 22:03, Orla McNulty 23:07, David Esler 23:46
Race 3:
Stevo Armour 19:58PB
Race 4:

On Thursday night, our elite squad was back in action at the latest junior Firmus Fab 5 event.
Eloise McAuley got a 10:19PB in the U11 60m. Leo McAuley completed the U13 75m Hurdles in 18:01. Emily completed the U15 3000m in 12:13:17. Emily Murphy also completed in the U15 75m Hurdles but no time is available.
Eloise McAuley also had a podium finish on Saturday, finishing second in the 500m at the N.I & Ulster Championship.
Aidy Hughes, our vest in the West, was at it again on Saturday, this time at the Washing Bay Green events. Aidy finished the 5k in 24:46.
This morning Ken McAuley headed south to Cork and completed their marathon in 3:46:18.
Our chief header was also back at it at the end of a busy week for the club. Lee O’Boyle completed the first Werunwild Norn Iron 100 event. This is an ultra race from Ballycastle across the Sperrins to Gortin. Not only did Lee complete it in 19hrs and 40 min, he only went and won it too. Congratulations Sir!
So this week’s tune is for all the parkrunners, at Antrim and elsewhere, and for those that helped organise and feed them. Harrier life!

Club Race Report – 29th May 2022

I’m disappointed in myself but I don’t think I have it in me to make any sarcastic comments about Liverpool fans this week given what happened both on and off the pitch last night. And that’s despite me getting here hours early to write something.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
ADav 24:28, Nuala Muldoon 24:51, Ciaran Wright 27:44, Ciaran Hawkins 28:18, Martin McCready 33:36, Joanne Milne 34:45, John Teer 38:17
Waterworks parkrun:
Bernie McAllister 27:39, David Esler 29:51
Victoria parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 20:08PB
Falls parkrun:
Anita Piatek 29:34
Portrush parkrun:
Stephen Armour 21:28PB, Sharon Dunn 30:00
Ormeau Park parkrun:
Susan Thompson 37:10
Antrim parkrun:
Stephen Semple 23:47, Maeve Kennedy 24:02PB, Elaine Kennedy 28:21, Riley Kerr 33:47
Jordanstown junior parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 7:38 and second finisher, Emily Murphy 8:10 and third finisher, Sinead O’Hare 9:46, Matthew Hawkins 10:24, Andrea Bradley 13:55
Waterworks junior parkrun:
Eloise McAuley 8:40, Leo McAuley 10:30, Jessie Smith 11:13, Lexi Smith 14:06PB
Musgrave junior parkrun:
Leo McAuley 9:03
There were 2 racing events this week, both of which form part of the 2022 Club Championship (kerching again), with the Mayfair races in Ballyclare on Saturday and Newry on Sunday.
The ever popular Mayfair event (absolutely nothing to do with the spread they put on) had perfect weather conditions and saw another great turnout from the Harriers:
5k
Tom Fleming 16:25PB, Emily Murphy 20:59, Brendan McGeown 21:13PB, Craig Goodall 21:28, Paul Skillen 22:38, Karen McKee 23:56, Aidy Hughes 24:51, Sinead O’Hare 26:50, Marie McBrien 28:41, Roseann McGeown 30:30
And great to see 2 juniors leading the way. Unless you’re one of the oldies they beat of course.
10k
Sean Doherty 42:35PB, Robbie Gould 42:42, Robert Gould 45:04, Stephen Murphy 49:49, Janet Grew 1:01:43, Dermot Boyd 1:03:51PB, Roisin Brooks 1:04:23
Then on Sunday we had other Harriers in Newry at both 10k and half marathon distance:
10k
Kevin Donnelly 37:08
Half Marathon
Martin O’Neill 1:21:54PB, Patrick Shields 1:32:15, Alan Stewart 1:44:58, Ciaran Wright 1:48:15
So this week’s tune is for the Juniors who ruled the Mayfair 5k. It’s an oldie for the young ‘uns. From one Junior to the others.

Until next week, nunca caminarás solo.

Leo McAuley 9:03
In other racing, Elaine Kennedy continued her assault on the Woodburn Trail Series, completing their second race in 42:23.
Lee O’Boyle and Micky McAuley both donned their trendy headbands this weekend as they took part in the Annalong Horseshoe. This is a 13.1 mile race that is part of the NIMRA Championship. It takes place across 5 of the peaks of the Mournes and includes just the 4,500ft of elevation. Lee finished 7th in 2:45:14 and Micky 16th in 2:54:44.

Track session on Wednesday and Sealstown run on Thursday. Ever get the feeling the coaches are trying to kill us? Won’t help numbers for the club championship! (Get yourselves signed up by the way). I get paid every time I plug it so expect a lot of this..
Taking on the parkruns this week were:
Valley parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 20:29PB and 3rd finisher, Joe Mathers 24:00, ADav 24:11, David Esler 26:25, Sinead ROTM O’Hare 26:49, Paul Skillen 26:52, Karen McKee 26:52, Clare Teer 28:11, Neill McGlinchey 30:59, Marie McBrien 32:25, Roisin Brooks 32:55, Joanne Milne 33:38, John Teer 38:37, Martin McCready 59:59

Enniskillen parkrun:

Ormeau Park parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 24:25PB, Stephen Semple 24:33
Antrim parkrun:

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Emily Murphy 7:56PB and third finisher, Eloise “media star” McAuley 8:23, Leo McAuley 8:32, Sinead ROTM O’Hare 9:01PB
And Leo’s 150th junior parkrun!
Bernie was nearly our parkrun tourist of the week (is Enniskillen foreign?) but thankfully I was saved, not for the first time, by Dermot Boyd. Dermot completed the Amsterdamse Bos parkrun in the Netherlands in 31:22. This parkrun, as our more cultured Harriers (both of them) may have guessed is in Amsterdam. It takes place in the Amsterdamse Bos park. Did you know it is three times the size of Central park in New York? Do you care? Fine.
Let’s hope Dermot enjoyed his time in Amsterdam and was able to see the sights and do the usual touristy things. I meant museums and pushbikes, people. Get your minds out of the gutter. Honestly!
The only other racing for the Harriers this week was at the first race of the Woodburn Forest Series. Elaine Kennedy finished in 28:15 with a wee course PB to boot.
So this week’s tune is for Dermot. Mainly because, y’know, it’s Dermot. But also because his Amsterdam trip gives me another chance to play this classic. David will probably hate this one.

Club Race Report – 8th May 2022

Okay, let’s just say it. The Belfast Marathon was sooo last week. The question this week is, what’s next?

Another one? parkrun PB? Club championship points? Weight gain and lethargy? The choice is yours.

Firstly, another late result off the Vidiprinter and another potential kicking for this report writer.

Turns out I missed Nuala Muldoon from last week’s marathon report. Nuala has recently made a return to the club. Possibly unintentionally, who knows?

But, anyhow, she finished the marathon in 4:14:14.

Highly unlikely she’ll ever read this so I think I got away with it. But apologies anyway.

Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:

Sean Doherty 21:17PB, Brendan McGeown 23:45, Alan Erwin 23:46, Elijah Cushley 25:10, David Esler 25:22, Clare Teer 27:47, Cathy Ryan 30:38, Marie McBrien 31:25, Neill McGlinchey 31:37, Roseann McGeown 32:24, Roisin Brooks 33:37, John Teer 38:43, Martin McCready 58:57

Waterworks parkrun:

Joe Mathers 22:49, ADav 23:26, Maeve Kennedy 25:17, Ciaran Wright 25:27, Susan Thompson 26:27, Joanne Milne 30:26

Ormeau Park parkrun:

Anita Piatek 32:20PB

Antrim parkrun:

Neil McCready 25:58, Elaine Kennedy 28:45

Sixmilewater parkrun:

Tom Fleming 18:15 and first finisher, Riley Kerr 35:29

Garvagh Forest parkrun:

Nikki Fleck 29:31

Jordanstown junior parkrun:

Elijah Cushley 7:49 and first finisher, Emily Murphy 8:15PB and second finisher, Sinead ROTM O’Hare 9:43, Riley Kerr 11:14, Matthew Hawkins 11:17, Rhys Kerr 15:54

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Eloise McAuley 8:17 and second finisher, Jessie Smith 11:02PB, Leo McAuley 12:25, Lexi Smith 15:00, Hollie Brennan 15:52

But there was plenty of other non-parkrun, non-marathon racing going on this week too.

On Friday night, several Harriers represented the club at the Scrabo Striders Run the Runways event.

5k:

Emily Murphy 21:49, Sinead ROTM O’Hare 25:41, Anita Piatek 26:14

10k:

Marty O’Neill 37:26PB, Adam McCann 38:54, Stephen Murphy 51:18

On the same night, several other Harriers were chasing PBs elsewhere, at NBH Night of Friendly 5000s. The club was superbly represented alongside NBH, Tafelta, Keep Er Lit and Beechmount:

Race 1:

Aidy Hughes 24:30PB, David Butler 26:51

Race 2:

Craig Goodall 21:24 and race winner, Lord Ian Brennan 22:11PB, Orla McNulty 22:57, David Esler 23:08

Race 3:

ADav 19:22, Robbie Gould 19:26, Elijah Cushley 20:12, Sean Doherty 20:16, Stevo Armour 20:17

Race 4:

Tom Fleming 16:47, Kevin Donnelly 17:59

Taking on Pats 5k in Pomeroy yesterday,  in memory of Pat Mallon, was Dermot Boyd with a time of 35:07

Folks there may have been more runners and definitely more PBs out there but if you don’t post in Team App then I can’t report it! The aul crystal ball ain’t what it used to be!

So this week’s tune is for those who took off on the runways on Friday night. Yes, I know this is runaways, not runways but you find a decent song about runways. And this one has Joan Jett.

Until next week, behave.

Club Race Report – Tuesday 3rd May 2022

A big week with a big race at the end of it. Possibly followed by big hangovers? Definitely followed by big aches and pains. But sure we love it. Don’t we?

Firstly, a late result off the Vidiprinter, as I apologise for missing out Angela Stevens’ amazing run at the Connemara Ultra. Angela finished the ultra distance in 8:15:33. And just to confirm that Lee O’Boyle did indeed finish 4th in a field of over 130 runners. Official time was 4:36:02.

I will now take myself out the back and give myself a good hiding for my omission.
Taking on the parkruns this week were:

Valley parkrun:
Elijah Cushley 21:24PB and third finisher, David Esler 25:17, Joanne Milne 30:38, ADav 30:46, Marie McBrien 34:32, Galina Stanevicius 42:09, Anton Piatek 56:23

Portrush parkrun:

Castlewellan parkrun:

But the focus this week was obviously the Belfast Marathon with the Harriers out in full force.

Not only running, but also supporting and volunteering. Fair play to all of them.

Results for the runners were: (PBs and 1st marathons noted where known)

Neil Campbell 2:53:48PB, Alan Erwin 2:57:16PB, Micky McAuley 3:00:23PB, ADav 3:11:29PB, Stephen Gallagher 3:16:48, Andrew McNevison 3:24:29, Patrick Shields 3:25:33, Stephen Smyth 3:26:43, Patricia Curistan 3:31:12PB, Stephen Armour 3:44:59 (1st timer), Sean Doherty 3:47:33 (1st timer) , Brendan McGeown 3:47:54, Joe Mathers 3:48:36, Alan Stewart 3:57:16PB, Paul Skillen 4:09:06, Anton Piatek 4:10:41PB, Johnny Carey 4:12:32, Karen McKee 4:19:41, Bernard McKeaveney 4:22:37PB, Sharon Dunn 4:25:38, Alex Stewart 4:26:47, Stephen Semple 4:29:15, Maeve Kennedy 4:29:15, Sarah O’Kane 4:32:20 (1st timer), Pamela McCafferty 4:32:22, Angela Stevens 4:57:39
So a huge congrats to all 26, including 7 PBs, 3 first timers and everyone else who just managed to finish, whatever their time. Huge achievements all round. Give yourselves a round of applause. I’ll wait……

And yet another word for all the Harriers who were out on the course supporting. Do not underestimate the boost it gives the runners.

So this week’s tune is for our marathon heroes. You may not have felt it in the last 3 miles; you may not have felt it on Monday morning; but the pain is temporary – the feeling of achievement is permanent. We salute you.
And the video reminds me of our Xmas dos.

Noosa parkrun takes place in Noosaville (obviously), in the State School car park (sure, why not). For the few of you who may not know, Noosaville is in Queensland, Australia. Not to be totally outdone by the juniors, our own header in chief, Lee O’Boyle, took on another Ultra. This one was the 39.3 mile ultra distance at the Connemarathon race series in Connemara.

No official results yet but, unofficially, Lee finished 4th overall in an amazing 4:36:08. And not to be outdone, Angela Stevens also completed the ultra in 8:15:40.

So this week’s tune is for our parkrun tourist trip. Here is an absolute belter from Australian Nick Cave’s side project Grinderman. Sit back in the sun and enjoy.

Until next week, behave.
