Club Report – Sunday 18th November 2018

Is it only me but as the nights get longer, does the mojo shrink and the gluttony increase? Red wine and chocolate may not be an official Harrier training plan but it seems to be my focus at the minute. Think I need some XC to shake me back into some kind of training. That, and the Jingle all the Way 5k.

On Wednesday, several Harriers took part in the latest Run in the Dark for the Mark Pollock Trust.
It was a great night for our own Mark Smith who finally got to the top of the podium with his first place result. Well done Sir!
10k
Mark Smith 36:32 (and 1st place), Gabrielle McMillan 50:55, Lisa Kerr 58:25, Andrew Kerr 58:25
5k
Ramunas Stanevicius 20:49
(No club name in official results so I can only report those who posted on Team App, or won!).

Mark Smith’s excellent form continued as he represented NI at the British & Irish Masters International XC in Swansea. He completed the course in 29:27 as his M45 team earned 3rd place.

Doing the rounds of the parkruns were:
Valley parkrun:
Tom Fleming 20:26, Noel Bloomfield 24:43, Neil Campbell 24:44, Eamonn Donaghy 26:41, Jackie McCreesh 27:53, Emily Dowling 28:04, Alan “how far is halfway?” Erwin 28:08, David Esler 30:24, Mairead HOTM O’Hare 34:34, Jennifer Maguire 34:35, John Teer 34:42, Patricia Kane 36:48, Rosalind Stitt 41:37

Waterworks parkrun:
Ramunas Stanevicius 19:59PB, Ken McAuley 22:27, Nuala Muldoon 24:32, Jim Hewitt 26:01, Galina Stanevicius 27:18

Antrim parkrun:

Queens parkrun:
Jim Guinn 28:40

Portrush parkrun:
Alan “barefoot” Kerr 24:29

As for the tourist, the vest in the west, Aidy Hughes, went to MUSA parkrun in Cookstown 23:27. Not sure if Cookstown counts as tourism. Cookstown, as we all know, is the home of both Jimmy Cricket and Typhoid Mary. I rest my case.
The real tourist this week was Jo Smyth who forfeited the sunny climes of mid Tyrone for Florida and the Clermont parkrun (40:03). Jo, as I’m sure you know, is one of 7 Harriers who have completed this parkrun but is the only one who has completed it more than once (3). Gotta love stats, don’t you.

And ADav went to Orangefield 21:18

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:23, Matthew Hawkins 11:34, Leo McAuley 11:37, Eloise McAuley 14:03

Bangor Junior parkrun:
Aaron Ladd 13:08PB

On Saturday afternoon, the Harriers descended on the Waterworks for the now annual, and legendary, Club Handicap Race. The day of the year when the adults get their butts handed to them by the junior members, bandits all of them.
As every runner was a Harrier in this one, full results are available on Team App, but suffice to say a big well done to winner Leo McAuley. Also congratulations to Rory Brooks and Eloise McAuley who completed the junior-filled podium.
Another big well done and thank you to Professor Alan Ladd, our very own hairy Harry Potter, who calculated all the timings and to his band of (mostly) less hairy helpers who made the day run so smoothly.

Lee O’Boyle and Prof Ladd were chasing times today around the flat runway course at Kirkistown.
I don’t have official times yet but my sources lead me to believe Lee PB’d (again) in approx. 1:20. Alan is just too slow loading his runs to Strava (Oops, source outed….)

This week’s song is a personal fav of Prof Ladd.
For his efforts yesterday, he deserves it.
You may or may not agree.
I love it.

Club Report – Sunday 11th November 2018

I should start by reporting the result that came in too late for last week’s report. Elaine Kennedy completed the New York marathon in 5:22:39. A great result as Elaine had to contend with a lot of injury issues during her training.

Doing the rounds of the parkruns were:
Valley parkrun:
Tom Fleming 22:47, Neil McCready 23:15, David Esler 28:08, Hilary Faith 29:46PB, Frances Kane 31:29, Stephen Weir 33:54, John Teer 34:20, Mairead O’Hare 34:47, Louise Ladd 34:47, Patricia Kane 50:08

Waterworks parkrun:
Joe Mathers 18:51PB (and 3rd place overall), Robert Gould 22:37, Ken McAuley 23:48, Lord Ian Brennan 24:49, Roisin Brooks 28:56

Antrim parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 24:51, Deborah Ewing 26:34, Tina Steele 26:34, Elaine NY Kennedy 47:38

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Laura ROTM Rose 21:50PB (and 2nd female finisher), Karen McKee 22:55, Noel Bloomfield 23:41PB, Jennifer Maguire 32:02

Stormont parkrun:
Galina Stanevicius 27:19

This week’s parkrun tourists included Emily Dowling who completed the Listowel parkrun in 29:48. It’s in Kerry. I’ve never been. But this week’s winner is, again, Anita Piatek who completed the Jindabyne parkrun in 31:53. It’s in Australia. Gabriel Byrne was in a film called Jindabyne. I’ve never seen it. Rolf Harris sang a song called Jindabyne. Guess what? I’ve never heard it.

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:20, Leo McAuley 10:17, Matthew Hawkins 11:17, Eloise McAuley 12:27, Olivia McCready 13:16

Jordanstown Junior parkrun:
Riley Kerr 12:55, Rhys Kerr 14:35

On Saturday, a few Harriers were at the opening Sperrin Harriers race of their Winter League.
Davagh Forest 10k Trail Race:
Lee O’Boyle 39:30, Nuala Muldoon 52:28, Jackie McCreesh 1:11:38

So a relatively quiet week that started with the torrential rain and wind of Tuesday training finished with perfect weather conditions for the first Trail @10 this morning as Lee took us round the paths of Woodburn Forest. So this week’s tune is for those who hit the forest trails.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report – Sunday 4th November 2018

As the leaves turn brown and the post-Dublin hangovers fade, the Harriers head back out on the roads and trails this week, making the most of the Autumn sunshine.

Valley parkrun:
Laura Rose 22:11PB (and 2nd female finisher), Stephen Gallagher 22:24PB, Gabrielle McMillan 24:11PB, Brendan McGeown 25:35(No PB – shamed), Alan Erwin 25:35, Neil Campbell 25:36, Neill McGlinchey 28:33, David Esler 29:32, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:34, Roseann McGeown 31:35, Frances Kane 31:35, Ryan McCready 31:50, Louise Ladd 31:51, John Teer 34:09, Mairead O’Hare 35:27, Neil McCready 57:33, Owen Fulton 57:55

Waterworks parkrun:
Kevin Donnelly 19:54, Robert Gould 24:02, Michael McFarlane 25:33, Jim Hewitt 25:38, Nikki Fleck 26:54, Philip Fleck 28:39PB, Sharon Thompson 33:49PB, Josi McKeating 33:52, Jackie McCreesh 34:24, Marie “50” McFarlane 34:25, Patricia Kane 36:31, Debbie Sterritt 36:32
And congratulations to Marie on her 50th parkrun!

Queens parkrun:
Maeve Kennedy 25:26

Antrim parkrun:
Tina Steele 25:34

Orangefield parkrun:
Ben Davidson 23:33

A few tourists this week.
Alastair CHO Houldsworth went to Cliffe Castle parkrun in completing in 21:48. Its in Keighley. It’s near Bradford. It’s pronounced Keeth-lee. Alastair Campbell and Mollie Sugden are from Keighley.
Sarah Ross went to Buckingham parkrun. It’s in Buckingham. It’s near Milton Keynes. She was 3rd female finisher in 22:48. Obviously quicker at parkrun than she is getting to New Zealand!
But the undisputed winner this week is Anita Piatek who completed the Main Beach parkrun in 32:49. This parkrun is on the Gold Coast of Australia. And it’s probably near a beach!

And ADav went to Orangefield 24:03

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:35, Leo McAuley 9:36PB, Matthew Hawkins 11:02, Eloise McAuley 11:05PB
Plenty of Ready Brek in the McAuley household! (Other breakfast cereals are available).

Jordanstown Junior parkrun:
Riley Kerr 13:09, Rhys Kerr 13:57PB

Saturday saw the latest Born 2 Run event, this time the trail course at Minnowburn.
5k
Stephen Weir 33:47, Jo-Anne Smyth 42:11

10k
Mark Smith was back on the podium yet again, finishing 2nd in 37:18.
Maeve Dunseath 56:12, David Mullan 59:53, Hilary Faith 1:02:49, Catherine Mullan 1:03:11, Debbie Morrow 1:15:27

Nuala Muldoon was our sole senior representative at the (non-league) McConnell Shield XC event, finishing in 23:31.
Tom Fleming represented the juniors finishing 2nd in the U14 race in 5:51.

This morning was the latest Decathlon 10k event. Enjoying the flatness were:
Peter McGarry 37:05, Martin O’Neill 39:42, Laura Rose 43:49PB (and 2nd female finisher for 2nd time this weekend!), Andrew Kerr 54:10PB, Janine McNevison 54:11, Paul Skillen 54:11, Roisin Brooks 57:02, Hilary Faith 1:02:22 (quicker than yesterday!)
Apologies if anyone else was missed as the results do not include club names.

Finally, Suzanne HOTM Brennan completed the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon in 1:54:40. The amount of wine taken or dine eaten has not been made available.
I note Hollie ran in a junior event on the same holiday. The Lord has a lot of catching up to do…….

As I write, Elaine Kennedy is still running the New York marathon. I’ll update her result in next week’s report.
In the meantime, here’s a wee song about NY to keep you going. (Not the obvious one).

Club Report – Sunday 28th October 2018

A quiet week this week, until the weekend, as most of you were gearing up for the two big events – the latest XC league event and the Dublin marathon.

Special mention to Lee O’Boyle who ran the XC after winning the EAMS Marathon that very morning in 2:55:15. Great run Lee!

Tom Fleming represented the club in the junior Even Age Group XC race coming 7th in the Boys U12 race in 7:24.

Doing the rounds of the parkruns were:

Valley parkrun:

Nuala Muldoon 23:57 (and 1st female finisher), Yasmin Lynn 28:13, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:26, Yvonne Thompson 35:36, Frances Kane 45:39, Rosalind Stitt 51:05, Patricia Kane 51:05, Galina Stanevicius 51:16

This week’s tourists have done it properly – Florida – with the Micky and Minnie Mouse of Mallusk Harriers taking part in the Clermont Waterfront parkrun:

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Jordanstown Junior parkrun:

Riley Kerr 13:25, Rhys Kerr 14:31

Sunday saw 29 Harriers don their woolly hats and head for Dublin for this year’s marathon. Rightly regarded as one of the best supported and organised on the calendar, the Harriers had a ball, both on and off the roads.

Dublin marathon:

Neil Campbell 2:58:10PB, Alan Ladd 2:58:46PB, Chris Quinn 3:08:36PB, Martin O’Neill 3:14:01PB, Kevin Donnelly 3:18:41PB, , Laura Rose 3:26:00PB, Alan Erwin 3:37:20PB, Brendan McGeown 3:38:02PB, Patricia Curistan 3:38:04PB, Karen McKee 3:41:53PB, Sarah Ross 3:41:57PB, Danny “barefoot” Donaldson 3:42:18, Susan Thompson 3:49:29, Jonny Smith 3:55:26, Damien Cole 4:07:25, Alan “big 50” Kerr 4:10:20PB, Christiaan Spies 4:11:51,Deborah Ewing 4:15:04, Tina Steele 4:15:12PB, Janet Grew 4:29:56, Ken “win one for the Gipper” McAuley 4:41:31, Tiffany Donaldson 4:48:05PB, Leeanne Skillen 4:51:27PB, Alex “long run” Davidson 4:51:28, Frances Kane 4:58:33 (1st marathon), Roseann “virgin from Belfast” McGeown 5:04:25 (1st timer), Laura Campbell 5:24:48, Neil “lovin’ it” McGlinchey 5:58:51PB, David “biggest cheer of the day” Esler 6:16:41

From the number of PBs and the general feedback from the runners, I think a big thank you is due to the coaches, run leaders and those who created the training plans. The runners obviously put the effort in but couldn’t reach these levels without the knowledge, encouragement and commitment of the coaching team. We salute you.

Also need to thank those Harriers who came down to support on the day even though they weren’t running. It was much appreciated by those struggling around the course.

I also hear the owners of a certain pub in Dublin have been able to close up and head to Spain for a fortnight based on Sunday’s takings.

So this week’s tune is for Lee and the Dubliners.

At mile 20 I thought I was dead.

At mile 22 I wished I was dead.

At mile 24 I knew I was dead.

At mile 26.2 I realized I had become too tough to kill

Downhill.
Buns.
It seems these two words are all that is needed to get Harriers out of bed.
At least the crowd at this morning’s 10@10 would definitely suggest so.
Lee is definitely back on a lot of Santa lists after that one.

But there was an awful lot of other running this week so let’s crack on:

Our vest in the west, Aidy Hughes took on the Killyclogher 5k, running it in 24:38.

Under 13s – Adam McCann 06:29, Tom Fleming 06:30
Under 15s – Ben Davidson 11:09

Also on Saturday, our headers department were allowed a wee day out and they headed for the Mournes, as they tend to do. Taking on the Mourne Skyline challenge was Micky McAuley 5:24:06, and Nuala Muldoon.

This week’s tune is to honour our Amsterdam heroes.
(Just listen to the first line of lyrics if you don’t know this classic – and you should!)
God only knows what shape they, and Amsterdam, are in by now.

Club Report – Sunday 14th October 2018

I had a whole spiel organised giving off about the rain.

I wrote it yesterday. I binned it this morning.

Instead I will have to give you my favourite metaphysical poet, John Donne:

“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face”

This week’s long run was definitely more enjoyable than last week!

Yesterday, our own Mark Smith and Nuala Muldoon took part in the Northern Ireland Masters Athletics Association (NIMAA) XC at the Dub Playing Fields. Mark’s time over 8k was 28:29 but more importantly he qualified for the NI Masters XC Team and will be part of the squad competing in Wales next month. Nuala’s time in the women’s race over 6k was 30:14.

The Harriers should be very proud to have representation at this level. Well done Sir.

Over in Saintfield, a couple of Harriers were taking on the Atlas Running Saintfield 10k:

Maeve Dunseith 56:24, Lisa Kerr 59:32

Doing the rounds of the parkruns were:

Valley parkrun:

Joe Mathers 19:23PB, Tom Fleming 19:49PB, Laura Rose (1st female finisher) 22:16PB, Alan Erwin 23:02, Brendan McGeown 23:55, Sarah Ross 24:07, Susan Thompson 24:59, Lord Ian Brennan 25:04PB, Janine McNevison 26:47PB (3rd week in a row!), Leanne Skillen 28:13, Neil Campbell 28:14, Oran McKee 29:35, Karen McKee 29:35, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:46, Frances Kane 29:55, Emily Dowling 30:22, Roisin Brooks 31:18, Sharon Dunn 31:18, Patricia Kane 41:39

Waterworks parkrun:

Robert Gould 22:32

Queens parkrun:

Jim Guinn 27:29, Jackie McCreesh 28:46, Marie McFarlane 30:39, Sharon Thompson 35:06, Josi McKeating 35:07, Miriam Clarke 39:20, Deirdre McCann 40:30

Antrim parkrun:

Maeve Kennedy 24:50PB, Deborah Ewing 28:44, Tina Steele 28:44

Dungannon parkrun:

Aidy Hughes 25:37

Newbie Galina Stanevicius thought she was this week’s best tourist as she completed the Omagh parkrun in 28:38 but she didn’t count on Mr & Mrs Donaldson. They went as far as Boston, Massachusetts to take part in the excellently named Jamaica Pond parkrun. Danny finished 3rd overall in 18:56 and Tiffany finished in 31:48.

And ADav went to Orangefield 22:30

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Joseph Eager 9:40, Ryan McCready 9:43, Matthew Hawkins 11:26, Olivia McCready 12:20, Aaron Ladd 14:24

Sophie Magee and Orin Calder headed to Manchester for the Half Marathon today, both finishing in 1:53:49 (you’ll be kept Sir!)

This week’s tune is to mark Sarah’s departure for New Zealand. Before you say anything, Crowded House only have one Kiwi, Neil Finn, so they’re basically Australian/American. Ladyhawke is 100% NZ.

Until next week, behave.

I wanted this week’s song to celebrate today’s golfing victory. I thought about REM’s Radio Free Europe. I was determined not to play The Final Countdown by Europe. Then I saw Poulter dressed as a post box and I knew what I had to do. Enjoy.

Club Report – Sunday 23rd September 2018

Firstly, apologies for the late posting. I couldn’t get a full list of half marathon results until today.

I think you all had a quiet week of racing just so you could all turn up for the Half yesterday. And why not! But more of that later.

2 members who shirked the Half were Lee ROTM O’Boyle and Alan Kerr. I suppose they had a good excuse as they both took on the Causeway Coast Marathon on Saturday instead.

Alan finished in 5:21:06. Lee finished in an amazing 2nd place overall in a time of 3:28:14. Some time for a course with over 2,600ft elevation.

Still squeezing in a parkrun were:

Valley parkrun:

Neil Campbell 22:33, Alan Erwin 25:37, John Teer 33:40, Rosalind Stitt 44:03, Patricia Kane 44:03, Katherine McCloskey 57:32

Waterworks parkrun:

Susan Thompson 24:36, Robert Gould 24:36, Ken McAuley 24:37, Jim Hewitt 24:54, Maeve Kennedy 25:36, Stephen Semple 25:37, Danny Donaldson 25:44, Tiffany Donaldson 35:12

And big congratulations to Maeve on completing her 100th parkrun (and for beating Stephen!)

Victoria parkrun:

Ben Davidson 22:38, Joanne Milne 27:42

Queens parkrun:

Jim Guinn 26:55

Antrim parkrun:

Tina Steele 29:13, Freda Stubbs 33:21, Josi McKeating 33:30, Fidelma McCoppin 33:31, Sharon Thompson 34:02

And ADav went to Victoria 19:52

Waterworks junior parkrun:

Leo McAuley 9:45PB, Eloise McAuley 11:56, Olivia McCready 14:38

The weather was kind to us yesterday as over 40 Harriers took on the Belfast Half Marathon, one of the largest club representations on show. Many PBs, plenty of stories and definitely no alcohol contributed to a great day.

Mark Smith 1:17:03, Alan Ladd 1:24:14PB, Joe Mathers 1:25:01PB, Neil Campbell 1:25:05, Martin O’Neill 1:26:47, Danny Donaldson 1:28:44, Alastair “toe model” Houldsworth 1:32:48, Kevin HOTM Donnelly 1:33:24PB, Laura Rose 1:35:07PB, Keith Waring 1:38:21, Karen McKee 1:39:07PB, Ken McAuley 1:38:32PB, Alan Erwin 1:38:46PB, Brendan McGeown 1:41:00PB, Patricia Curistan 1:41:01PB, Damien Cole 1:43:23PB, Sarah Ross 1:43:02, Sharon Dunn 1:45:41PB, Suzanne Brennan 1:45:41PB, Brian McDonald 1:46:16, Stephen Semple 1:46:26, Sarah McCafferty 1:50:21PB, Gabrielle McMillan 1:49:01PB, Pamela McCafferty 1:51:09PB, James Guinn 1:49:59, Lord Ian Brennan 1:53:12PB, Maeve Kennedy 1:55:13, Tony McKeating 1:56:26PB, Tina Steele 1:54:04PB, Deborah Ewing 1:54:05, Joanne Milne 2:00:39, Emily McKeown 2:05:08, Owen Fulton 2:05:11, Leeanne Skillen 2:11:57, David Esler 2:12:13, Lisa Kerr 2:14:51, Neill McGlinchey 2:14:47, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 2:18:30PB, Anita Piatek 2:19:22PB, Tiffany Donaldson 2:24:09, Laura Campbell 2:24:10, Zoe O’Prey 3:18:28PB

To see so many PBs is a tribute to the hard work everyone has been putting in lately. But it’s also due to all the efforts of the coaches for putting on such good sessions and for putting together all the training plans. Take a big purple collective bow.

Also big thanks to those who put up and took down the gazebo and provided the refreshments (and bottle opener) on the day.

I was going to post “Keep on Running” as this week’s song but you probably heard enough of it yesterday. And you deserve better for completing a Half. So sit back, relax and enjoy.

Club Report – Sunday 16th September 2018

“The lesson of running is to train well, and then have full faith in your training and show the proof in the race”.

You may think these fine words were spoken by me after my long run this morning (highly unlikely as I was unable to communicate at that point) or more philosophising from Danny, but no.

These are the words of Eliud Kipchoge after breaking the world record by 1 min 18 secs in Berlin this morning. Time of 2:01:39. Average pace about 4:38 per mile. No words.

And let it not go unnoticed that Gladys Cherono won her third Berlin, broke the course record and also PB’d in a time of 2:18:11

On Friday, Micky McAuley continued his quest for promotion within the headers department by taking part in the Salomon Ben Nevis Ultra. Just 52km and 4,000ft of elevation. (No Lee, no). Micky came 146th out of an elite field of almost 300 in a time of 6:18:15. Promotion highly likely Micky.

Yesterday, Mark Smith won yet another podium finish, coming third in the Tafelta 10 mile road race in 58:46.

Same day, Neil McCready and Paul Skillen covered 2 elements of the GOAT Triathlon relay on Saturday in the Glens of Antrim in a time of 1:38:47.

Then this morning, our vest in the west found yet another race to enter in Tyrone, completing the Dungannon Little Running Club 5k in 24:39 (unofficial).

Also today, Neil McCready decided running cross country was too easy (?!) and so competed in the Ulster Cyclo-Cross event in Lurgan. Basically XC on a bike! He completed the 8.4 mile course in 48:20 (unofficial).

The mere mortals amongst us went to the parkruns:
Valley parkrun:
Tom Fleming 20:22, Neil Campbell 20:32, Alan Erwin 22:12PB, Laura Rose 22:24PB (2nd female finisher), Sarah Ross 24:09 (3rd female finisher), Nuala Muldoon 24:20, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:57, Janine McNevison 31:00, Marie McFarlane 32:38, John Teer 33:40, Debbie Sterritt 33:55, Freda Stubbs 34:10, Fidelma McCoppin 34:11, Mairead O’Hare 35:53, Sharon Thompson 36:54, Deirdre McCann 40:59, Rosalind Stitt 41:05, Patricia Kane 41:06

Waterworks parkrun:
Stephen Semple 22:44, Suzanne Brennan 22:48 (2nd female finisher), Ken McAuley 23:43, Susan Thompson 23:53, Maeve “ice cream with a flake” Kennedy 24:23PB, Robert Gould 26:48, Jo Smyth 41:11

Falls parkrun:
David Esler 27:59

Queens parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 29:42, Louise Ladd 29:44

Wallace parkrun:
James Guinn 24:03

Stormont parkrun:
Jennifer McCoppin 32:21

This week’s tourists were Mr and Mrs Donaldson who visited City of Derry parkrun finishing in 18:29PB and 31:12PB respectively with a 2nd place finish for Danny. He had no words of wisdom. And Joanne Milne avoided having to answer for the cake no show by going to Orangefield 26:49PB.

And ADav went to Orangefield 20:10 (and 2nd place)

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager 9:23, Ryan McCready 9:29, Leo McAuley 9:46PB, Eloise McAuley 11:50, Matthew Hawkins 12:29, Olivia McCready 13:50

Victoria junior parkrun:
Aaron Ladd 14:05

Given the amazing performances in Berlin today (and all the long runs being completed at the minute) there’s only one song I can really use this week.
