Club Report: Sunday 24th December 2017

Well, twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Mainly because we were all watching Die Hard and eating Quality Street.

Hopefully you have recovered from Nuala’s Santa Run or the Grew’s mulled wine or whatever running you managed this weekend. Despite what you think, the calorie count did not swing in your favour. But ignorance is bliss; let’s make it next week’s problem.

Valley parkrun:
Alex Davidson 20:11, Neil Campbell 21:47, Nuala Muldoon 24:57, Paul Skillen 26:29, Yasmin Lynn 27:04, Neill McGlinchey 27:23, Clare Teer 28:01 (and 50th parkrun, well done Clare on hitting that target!) Sir Martin McCready 28:28, Dermot Boyd 33:17, Patricia Kane 41:17, Frances Kane 45:15

Waterworks parkrun:
Susan Thompson 23:28, Robert Gould 23:29, Patrick Hamill 26:04, Lord Ian Brennan ROTM 26:13, Patrick McGuckian 28:53, Fiona Wylie 29:54, Jennifer McCoppin 34:20, Fidelma McCoppin 34:21, Marie McFarlane 34:21, Deirdre McCann 38:51

Antrim parkrun:
Lee O’Boyle 19:27 (2nd PB in two weeks) Tom Fleming 20:18, Stephen Semple 24:46, Janet Grew 28:30

Stormont parkrun:
Duncan Baxter 34:42

We also had a few Harriers out on tour this week:

Citypark (Craigavon) parkrun
Elaine Kennedy 28:01

Danny and Tiffany Donaldson went somewhere even more cosmopolitan than Craigavon. (Not possible I hear you cry).
Both were at Bois de Boulogne near Paris. However, in true French style, results for 23rd are not posted yet. Sacrebleu!
Let’s just say Tiffany won, with Danny a close second, and that there were loads of croissants and patisserie all round.

My presents to you all are on the way. Having read all your Facebook posts this year, you’re all getting dictionaries!

But for 24 hours tomorrow I will drop the sarcasm and allow in some Xmas spirit. So, enjoy some quality time with loved ones. Don’t message, WhatsApp or text them. Actually, phone them or go see them in real life! (You’ll be ignoring them again come January once the new season sets in anyway)

I’ll leave you with a much under played Xmas classic:

Until next week, behave.

Club Report: Sunday 17th December 2017

“The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment, where is it to be found?”

“Snow and ice. Do one.”

The more cultured Harriers (i.e. The Insider and no-one else) will recognise the first quote as the words of JB Priestley. The second quote is my own.

Yes, another week affected by weather; another week of binge eating instead of running. Several parkruns were cancelled again but the more resourceful Harriers travelled to ensure they kept running:

Stormont parkrun:

Lee O’Boyle 19:56 (PB and first sub 20 – well done) Yasmin Lynn 25:49, Terry McIvor 25:50, Duncan Baxter 34:31

Portrush parkrun:

Kelly Carlisle 36:55

Ormeau parkrun:

Elaine Kennedy 28:29

Larne parkrun:

Alan Kerr 24:58

Today’s running was somewhat curtailed as many recovered from the Harrier Xmas party. Having witnessed the “dancing” of several club members I can only say I am glad we are a running club and not a dancing club. Please note, lessons are available locally. Please.

Big thanks to Social Boy, Ian Simpson and his helpers for putting the whole thing together so well.

It has come to my attention that an example has been set by Lord Ian ROTM Brennan (as he will hence be known) who still managed 10 miles this morning after attending last night.

Although holding his trophy aloft for the entire run did slow him down a bit.

Well, hopefully we can all get some running in this week. If not, still time to write your Santa letter. I’m asking for a big fat bank account and a slim body. Hope Santa doesn’t mix them up again like he did last year.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report: Sunday 10th December 2017

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Apologies for the late post but I’ve just peeked out of the igloo I’ve been living in since Friday. Doesn’t seem I’ve missed much though. The “celebrity” jungle is finally over and the “lovely young couple” are out of Strictly. Looks as if my Xmas presents have come early. Bah, humbug all round!

So, how did the Harriers get on with their parkruns this week:

Waterworks parkrun:

Nope

Victoria parkrun:

Nothing

Antrim parkrun:

Nobody

Valley parkrun:

Are you kidding?

Even the XC brigade were beaten by the weather. Must have been bad!

But some Harriers did find a way to get the vests on – If you want to run, head for the sun.

A 14 strong crowd of Harriers packed their knotted hankies and straw donkeys and headed for Lanzarote.

Going for the full sunburn package and taking on the full marathon were:

Matthew Cromie 3:59:01, Nuala “I don’t count seconds” Muldoon 4:00:55 and Sarah Knowles 4:13:04.

Trying to get to the bar early by opting for the half marathon option were:

Alex “The Robe” Davison 1:32:03 (bet he still didn’t get a round in though), Neil Campbell 1:42:35, Laura Rose 1:48:30, Paul Skillen 2:16:35, Louise Ladd 2:30:38 (First Half & PB), Jennifer Butler 2:30:56, Noel Bloomfield 2:30:56, Leanne Skillen 2:41:02, Laura Campbell 2:41:02, Neill “The Gentleman” McGlinchey 2:41:03

Taking the 10k option was Owen “sensitive skin” Fulton coming home in 58:18.

Well done to all. Great to see the Harrier vest doing us proud in endurance events around the world.

And, yes, I am referring to the hotel bar session afterwards and not the actual race.

The weather may beat us again this week but that only gives you more time to get your Xmas shopping done. As I told the current Mrs Cavillator last year, “I put so much thought into your gift I ran out of time to buy it”.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report: Sunday 3rd December 2017

This week was dominated by a great performance from one of the club’s brightest stars. After last week’s false start, Jamie Campbell finally got to hit the tarmac at today’s Waterworks junior parkrun. Jamie was one of 5 Mallusk juniors running this morning:

Waterworks junior parkrun:
Joseph Eager (home in a very impressive 5th place) 9:36, Odhran Skillen 14:00, Aaron Ladd 17:52, Jamie Campbell 18:14, Christopher Campbell 18:38. Parents Laura and Neil can be very proud that their running genes have been passed on to yet another son.

Waterworks parkrun:
Susan Thompson 22:48, Neil McCready 24:57, Patrick Hamill 25:33, Anna Seaward 30:08, Roisin McLaughlin 30:20, Tracy Whittley 32:41, Maeve McGinley 32:41, Alyson Taylor 32:42, Deirdre McCann 37:34

Victoria Parkrun:
Alex Davidson 19:18, Laura Hutcheson-Magee 39:30

Antrim parkrun:
Alan Kerr 24:02, Elaine Kennedy 27:02

Valley parkrun:
David Esler 26:20, Clare Teer 28:32, Leeanne Skillen 29:13, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 29:30, Laura Campbell 30:02, Frances Kane 31:55, Ian Dinsmore 36:55, Patricia Kane 39:22

This week’s parkrun tourists were Patrick McGuckian who made it to the St Anne’s parkrun in Dublin and came home 10th in 19:14 and Owen Fulton who finished the Sale parkrun near Manchester in 26:01.

Mark Smith represented himself and the Club at the Born 2 Run 10k event at Loughgall. His time of 34:23 was good enough for a second place finish. Well done Mark and great to see the MH vest on the podium. Any other week, this would be the highlight, but young Jamie has stolen the limelight! Great running also at Loughgall by Dermot Boyd taking on the 5k option in 33:52.

The lunatic fringe that is our XC runners headed for Ballyclare to take part in Annadale Striders hosted Malcolm Cup. Not only did they run about in the muck for a bit but they also, in many cases, made their kids suffer with them:

U11 0.5 miles
Ryan McCready 4:12, Joseph Eager (not content with just his parkrun effort) 4:27, Maili Skillen 5:04, Odhran Skillen (another impressive 2 race effort) 6:01

U13 1 mile
Chris “2 races wee bro” Campbell 7:57

Ladies 3 miles
Nuala Muldoon 24:52 (especially impressive as she forgot her spikes), Yasmin Lynn 29:42

Male 4 miles
Mark Smith (yes, him again) 24:58, Lee O’Boyle 28:30, Kevin Donnelly 28:54, Alan Ladd 29:33, Neil McCready 31:11, Terry McIvor 31:50

Whilst we understand that the XC runners are “slightly different” from the rest of us and need careful handling, it is great to see the MH vest (and marquee) out and about at these events. Nuala Muldoon needs a big round of applause for her ongoing efforts to convince us to take part in this madness. Long may it continue.

One of the coaches told me this week that, to improve, it is important to finish what I started. So far, I’ve finished 2 selection boxes, and a bottle of red. Feel the difference already.

Until next week, behave.

Club Report: 26th November 2017

Xmas is coming and the goose is not the only thing getting fat as many Harriers seem to be preparing for winter hibernation.
Local parkruns were hit by the weather for the first time this winter with only Stormont, Queens and Victoria left unscathed.
Stormont parkrun:
Danny Donaldson 20:33, Nuala Muldoon 23:49, Sir Martin McCready 24:10, Joseph Eager 26:40, Stephen Semple 26:52, Tiffany Donaldson 32:34

Victoria parkrun:
Joe Mathers 20:28, Lisa Brown 23:04, Terry McIvor 24:25, David Esler 26:37, Aimee Fleck 36:34, Nikki Fleck 36:44, Lucy Fleck 43:16 (great family effort)

Queens parkrun:
Elaine “Iceland not Tesco” Kennedy 51:31

This week’s parkrun tourist was Kevin Donnelly who made it to the Hove parkrun in Brighton and came home in a very respectable 20:46.

Final parkrun mention goes to Jamie Campbell, who turned up for his first ever Junior parkrun only for it to be cancelled.
Fair play Jamie but that’s a life lesson right there son. Not everything comes to those who deserve it. It’s a cruel world out there and the sooner you grasp that, the better. Happy Xmas by way too, hope Santa is good to you. (It’s been a long hard week, okay!)

The Harriers finished off their Saturday at the ever popular Seeley 10k in Ormeau Park.
The club was well represented with 20 runners taking part. A few first timers at this distance and a few PBs so well done to all:
Mark Smith 35:10, Patrick “doesn’t look a day over 40” McGuckin 39:32, Paul “run like a girl” Skillen 48:46, Suzanne Brennan 48:47PB, Stephen Semple 49:03, Ian “closing the gap” Brennan 50:06PB, Tony McKeating 50:12PB, Nikki “faster without those pesky kids” Fleck 52:43, Maeve Kennedy 54:39, Roisin Brooks 55:49, Lee-Anne Hutchinson 58:20PB, Marie McFarland 1:00:53, Fiona Wylie 1:00:59, Fidelma McCoppin 1:01:07, Maureen Ward 1:08:10PB, Josi McKeating 1:08:10PB, Claire Skillen 1:21:54, Rosalind Stitt 1:22:27, Miriam Clarke 1:22:29, Patricia Kane 1:23:08

As many Harriers swap trainers for bar stools at this time of year (you know who you are Brennans) the coaches have asked me to point out that there are calories available from sources other than alcohol. Maybe, but why.
As I said, it’s been a long week, so just remember, people are like a slinky, twisted and annoying.
But you can’t help but smile as they fall down the stairs.
(I will hit any young people who had to google what a slinky was)

Here’s a jolly tune though:

Club Report: Sunday 12th November 2017

Another fun-filled week has passed in the life of the Mallusk Harriers. The club held it’s Handicap Race again and members headed off to races as far away as Athens, Fairview in Dublin and, er, Tollymore.

So, onto the results:

Waterworks parkrun:
Matthew Cromie 20:31, Ryan Clarke 21:03, Robbie Gould 21:49, Stephen Semple 23:16, Patrick Hamill 25:25, Joseph Eager 26:31, Maeve Kennedy 26:33, Fiona Wylie 30:27, Jennifer McCoppin 32:18, Maureen Ward 32:19, Freda Stubbs 32:30, Tiffany Donaldson 34:03, Danny “Clever Boy” Donaldson 34:04, Rosalind Stitt 34:23, Deirdre McCann 38:13, Miriam Clarke 39:44

Valley parkrun:
Ciaran Skillen 27:06, Clare Teer 28:20, Frances Kane 29:44, Owen Fulton 30:35, Stephen Weir 31:22, Debbie Sterritt 31:51, Marie McFarlane 31:53, Fidelma McCoppin 31:54, Erin Teer 39:36

Victoria parkrun:
Alex Davidson 19:08, Ben Davidson 21:58

Falls parkrun:
Susan Thompson 25:10, Ken McAuley 25:10
It is believed that Ken went out to celebrate matching Susan’s time and has not been seen since. Please keep a look out.

Antrim parkrun:
Elaine Kennedy 27:53, Nikki Fleck 38:44, Aimee Fleck 38:47, Lucy Fleck 43:43
(Could’ve let them beat you Nikki!)

Fairview parkrun:
The Brennans headed to Dublin for what seems to be a lot of drinking in green sports tops. Rugby may have been involved but this is yet to be proven.
Suzanne Brennan 24:49, Ian Brennan 24:56
Ian, your day will come. And when it does, men all across the club will sing your name.

Club 5k Handicap Race
Later on, Saturday brought the second running of the club 5k Handicap Race, once again expertly organised by Professor Ladd, the Harry Potter of the statistical world.
As with most things in life, certainly in mine, it was dominated by the females.
The first 5 finishers were all female with top honours going to Sophie Davidson, our second junior winner in a row. In second place was Hannah Hope and third place went to Gillian Bainbridge.
10 of our 25 runners achieved 5k PBs so well done to them and to all 25 who ran and the many others who came along to support, photograph and generally catch the flu.
Full timings are in the Newsletter section of Team App.

26Extreme Tollymore Trail Marathon Events
Our adopted head-the-ball, Micky McAuley, took on the Ultra distance and completed it in an amazing 7:00:23 although you think he would have tried to knock off that 23 seconds. Next time Michael, next time.
Our female header-in-chief, Nuala Muldoon, calmed down for once and tackled the Half Marathon option, finishing in 1:56:56
Hilary Faith stuck to one discipline for a change and completed the 10k in 1:04:25.
Athens Marathon
Our Club Chairman and Head Coach decided that Tullymore wasn’t good enough for them and, for people of their standing, nothing would do but to head back to the cradle of the madness that is 26.2.
They both took on a tough course from Athens to the town of Marathon. (Rumours it has recently taken on a sponsorship deal and changed its name to Snickers have been denied by Greek authorities).
Cat finished in 4:26 and Alan in 4:41. Well done to you both. Enjoy the aftermath.
Although I know Cat in particular has at least another 90 mins of pain to go through before the day is over #GAWA.

So that ends another eventful, female dominated week in the life of the Mallusk Harriers. Gents, please raise your games and try to claw back at lease a smidgeon of dignity.

This week, I leave you with a tribute to those that made the trip to Athens in the hope it will ease their pain:

Club Report: 5th November 2017

Well, Newsie has had to step down from reporting duties, allegedly entering rehab for a bad Shot Blok habit, so whilst he/she is incapacitated, you’ll have to put up with me.
You’ve had the funny one and the poetic one, now it’s the bitter and twisted one. I’m the uncle nobody talks about, the one you hope you don’t sit beside at the Xmas dinner.

So, onto the results:

Waterworks parkrun:
This weekend celebrated the 7th anniversary of parkrun in Ireland, Waterworks being the first back in 2010. 328 runners turned up to join the celebrations and Mallusk Harriers were more than ably represented by 33 runners and many more supporters, several still sporting post-Dublin hangovers.
Also not forgetting that Jack McCready celebrated his 50th parkrun by once again beating his Da. Obviously still not boring.

Alex Davidson 19:12, Kevin Donnelly 19:38PB, Robbie Gould 23:02, Laura Rose 23:17, Susan Thompson 23:25, Ken McAuley 23:26, Matthew Cromie 23:39, Eamon Donaghy, 24:00, Nuala Muldoon 24:05, Brendan McGeown 25:20, Patrick Hamill 25:35, Nicki Fleck 25:35, Robert Gould 25:39, Jack McCready 26:10, Martin McCready 26:15, Yasmin Lynn, 26:20, Terry McIvor 26:20, Sharon McAvana 26:35, Joseph Eager 27:08, Stephen Semple 27:09, Maeve Kennedy 27:29, Anna Seaward 27:58PB, Angela Stevens 28:10 (self-declared, no barcode!) Ryan McCready 29:32, Neil McCready 29:33, Neill “Boker” McGlinchey 29:36, Chris “Beat the Da” Campbell 31:53, Neil “Loser” Campbell 31:57, Patrick McGuckin 32:02, Danny “Why does this woman keep following me” Donaldson 32:03, Tiffany “Has he not gone yet” Donaldson 32:41, Anna-Marie Nolan 32:42, Claire Skillen 38:29

Valley parkrun:
Well done to Patricia Kane on reaching the 100 mark this weekend.
Tom Fleming 20:53, David Esler 28:15, Frances Kane 29:19, Clare Teer 29:49, Michelle Kerr 31:16, Fiona Wylie 32:32, Debbie Sterritt 32:39, Freda Stubbs 33:36, Fidelma McCoppin 33:37, Alison Rogers 34:14, Sharon Thompson 35:11, Patricia Kane 37:38, Jennifer McCoppin 37:38, Miriam Clarke 39:16, Rosalind Stitt 39.17

Queens parkrun:
Carol Leckie 26:24, Elaine Kennedy 27:50

Antrim parkrun:
Alan “Lonely pint” Kerr 24:21

Carrickfergus parkrun:
Michael McFarlane 25:49, Owen Millar 29:20

Taking on the latest Born to Run trail race at Minnowburn were:
5k: Dermot Boyd 32:10, Kelly Carlisle 44:03, Joanne Smyth also at 44:03.

10k: Catherine Mullan 1:00:04, Elaine Kennedy 1:01:35 (2nd run of the day), Louise Ladd 1:03:04, Duncan Baxter 1:05:03, Stephen Weir 1:10:18, Jenni Reilly 1:14:48

Several runners headed east this morning for the race with no results (big friggin’ help) that is the Decathlon 10k. So far, these are the results I know of:
Alan Ladd 44:40, Kevin Donnelly 45:22, Neil McCready 46:14PB (regaining a smidgeon of self-respect after his mauling from Jack the previous day) Laura Rose 47:02PB – an amazing, and possibly unhinged effort, given her result in Dublin only a week ago, Suzanne Brennan 49:58, Nicki Fleck 51:50, Karen Jamison 59:01.
Also running, but with no time known were Nicola Hunter-Boyd, Tracy Whittley, Patrick McGuckian, Marie McFarlane, Michael McFarlane, Joanne Milne. (PM with time to update)

The XC runners (our very own lunatic fringe) were in action and mud at the EAH McConnell Shield event:
Mark Smith 30:11, Lee O’Boyle 35:04, Terry McIvor
Nuala Muldoon 23:49, Sarah Knowles 24:14, Yasmin Lynn (another 2 in a day lunatic) 29:23

Finally, not satisfied with the XC, Lee O’Boyle also took on the trails around Garvagh Forest today, recording a 10k time of 44:00 (wearing bib 44 – spooky!)

So, a typically quiet weekend for the Harriers.
You’ve probably, like me, got the Sunday evening blues so here is a little treat from me to you. It’s nothing to do with running, its only cus it’s my first week and it definitely doesn’t mean I like you, cus I don’t.

Comber Cup (Saturday 14th)

This weekend saw the first race of the cross country league in Comber. A proud day for Ladies Club Captain Nuala Muldoon. The first year Mallusk has had a fullCross Country Team for the league. Well done to all those who stepped up, especially those on their debut cross country race. A very hilly and muddy course.
First to go and cut up the ground for the men was the Ladies 6k race. Captain Nuala Muldoon was first in 31.20.6, loving every minute Suzanne Brennan close behind in 32:56:6, sailing in third Jackie McCreesh 37:40:00, Yasmin Lynn with suspiciously clean legs in 41:00:1. Finally Margaret Craig and Anne-Marie Craig also getting their feet wet and muddy.
The Men’s 8k race was the last of the day and an extra lap. First for the Harriers was Mark Smith in a super fast 31:36:8, Lee O’Boyle was next in an amazing 37:31:7, followed closely by Kevin Donnelly looking like he was enjoying it far too much in 38:10:4, Neil McCready biathlon man cycled to Comber in an hour ran the course in 41:03:5 and then cycled home, Terry McIvor powered through despite a swollen foot in 45:36:5.
Special thanks to Ian Simpson Facilities Manager and Photographer, McIvor and Lynn Catering, Mark Smith’s Creche, Ian Brennan Head Cheerleader, and of course the brains of the entire operation Nuala Muldoon.
The next xc race will be Kilbroney on Saturday 28th October. The XC league is a team sport where points are awarded for performance and participation. Join us!

Till the next run.
